4 out of 5 eggsRefurbished Roku 2 XS Media Player

Pros: - Easy Installation.
- Refurbished Units Look Brand New.
- Good Price on Refurbished Units.
- Has Plex App to Stream Media Files from you Server/NAS.
- Many Channels to Choose From.

Cons: - Only 2.4GHz WiFi Capability.
- Ethernet Connection is Only T-100 not Gigabit.
- Included Batteries are Dead.
- Need to Sign Up with a Credit Card to Activate Unit.
- Most Channels are Pay Channels.
- Cannot Access OTA Channels for Free.

Other Thoughts: I wrote a pretty scathing review of Roku boxes when I initially purchased one to try. I was unhappy with the lack of ability to access many of the "broadcast station" channels like ABC, CBS, CWTV, or NBC as Roku channels that I could access through the internet. I was also unhappy about the requirement to provide a credit card to activate the Roku device on-line. These are still problems that I do not like about the Roku media player.

Since my initial experiences with Roku, I have had a opportunity to try out the "Smart HDTV's" and other media players. Compared with them, the Roku is very decent. In my experience, Roku has many more channels to choose from and loading access times are good.

I also found and installed the PLEX application which allows me to stream media from my servers to my HDTV's over my gigabit network. Most "Smart HDTV's" are supposed to do that but don't in reality.

I have since purchased several more of the Roku 2 XS units to connect to standard HDTV's because they have much better performance and capability and performance than "Smart HDTV's" which cost many US$100's more for that "smart" capability.

Things I would still like to see with the Roku are a dual WiFi channel (2.4GHz and 5GHz) device and Gigabit ethernet connection. The Roku 3 does have these functions but costs at least 50% more for the refurbished units.

The other think I would like to see is the ability to plug in a wireless keyboard into the Roku unit to be able access the internet and type in search functions rather than have to use the handheld remote. Many of the Android mini's and sticks have this capability which would further extend the ease of use and capabilities of the Roku Units.

Right now, the refurbished Roku 2 XS units are still the least expensive way to get "smart" capabilities with a HDTV. Until "Smart HDTV's" get a LOT better and less expensive, the Roku media player combined with a regular HDTV will be the way to go.

5 out of 5 eggsNot a lemon

Pros: It works and the remote works just fine if you READ THE DIRECTIONS on how to set it up. I like it. Its small enough to take on the road. Does wifi and LAN and I can hook it up to an old school tube TV or an HDTV.

Cons: People complain too much and are just too hard to please.

Other Thoughts: I like turtles

Pros: Easy setup and install 3rd party apps on it. Now I can import youtube and see videos from many more free places.

Cons: Not really. Great easy add-on to my TV.

2 out of 5 eggsRefurbished Roku 2 XS

Pros: The item is nice to use, if it is working.

Cons: Have purchased the refurbished item from newegg and had to return it for a replacement TWICE. The first time the Roku module was not working at all, the second time the remote was not working... Had to spend a lot of time with processing the returns and trying to get the shipping money back from newegg.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat product, good value, subpar refurbishing

Pros: * Easy to install and use
* Large variety of private and public channels
* Low refurbished cost
* Plays USB content using Roku media player app as well as 3rd party apps
* Plex support via the Plex app or the free RARflix
* Both wifi and wired Ethernet
* Works with HDTVs and old TVs

Cons: * Plastic cover was full of scratches
* Batteries had to be replaced within 2 hours

Other Thoughts: The Roku 2 XS is a better product than the newer versions of the Roku 1 and 2. The Roku 3 has a faster processor, but also costs significantly more. For most users, the Roku 2 XS is a great value. Yet the unit received had a previous rough life. Don't know how someone could scratch a Roku that much. I don't place much weigh on aesthetics, but the unit received appeared much more heavily used than a manufacturer refurbished product.

5 out of 5 eggsBetter in the end

Pros: -Tiny!
-Built-in Wifi and Ethernet port
-USB 2.0 Slot
-MicroSD Slot
-A/V port
-HDMI PORT
-Super Low power consumption that there is no ON/OFF button
-Easy firmware updates
-Wii-like wireless remote technology
-HD 1080P output
-Plays 100% full HD 1080p movies right off a flash drive with files such as .mkv and .mp4 with no lag at all.
-Netflix, hulu, and many other streaming services which many are free.
-Games like angry birds
-Cool themes and wallpapers to choose from
-A media center solution so small it fits right in the palm of your hands.

Cons: -No youtube app :( I heard they used to have it at first but was taken out. I also read that there was a way around it. (Research).

Other Thoughts: Will surely need to be updated from first use in order to have the latest firmware and software for best performance. I installed a 4GB MicroSD in it to perform better by caching on the memory card. All I really needed it for was for Netflix app and to play mp4 and mkv 1080p movies right off the flash drive so I don't need to keep plugging my desktop or laptop into the tv every time we want to watch a movie. Soon we will be using the Roku with a 1080p 3D projector.

3 out of 5 eggsAwesome, BUT...

Pros: Easy use; easy to install. Your mother can use a Roku; your grandfather can install and configure one.

Bluetooth remote (no line-of-sight needed). Built-in WiFi, but also has RJ45 ethernet jack.

"Just works."

Cons: Does NOT support multiple profiles in Netflix. And there's no update for the Roku 2 in the pipeline to change this. Ever.

Yes, I took off *two* stars for this. This is a major usability problem that's doubly annoying because Roku 3 does support multiple profiles.

Other Thoughts: The more experience I get with Roku players, the more I like them. They do not do well with playing files from local storage, but for anything streaming, they're awesome. Pair them with a Plex Media Server (any old computer will do—just install Xubuntu and Plex) and they can play any video or audio file you have.

I also have a competing brand of media player that does play local files well. But it freezes up on a regular basis and must be power-cycled. This Roku has never needed to be rebooted, restarted or whatever.

4 out of 5 eggsOk for the price.

Pros: Refurb pricing.

Cons: Not stable.

Other Thoughts: I have purchased just about every generation of the Roku they have put out. I have 4 of them in operation in my own as of right now.

This one is obviously a return model as it has issues. It will sometimes freeze during playback and reboot. Sometimes it will reboot while a video is paused.

Happens maybe once or twice a week.

I guess you get what you pay for. I paid about half price for the product and got one that's glitchy. Next purchase I'll guy back to buying new ones.

Luck of the draw with refurb. Your luck may be better or worse.
