Its durable, aluminum casing provides added protection.

  • newegg Tough Protection Kingston's DataTraveler Vault Privacy Edition USB Flash drive is assembled in the U.S. for organizations that require a secure way to store and transfer portable data. Users can set a complex password with minimum characteristics to prevent unauthorized access. The stored data is 100 percent secured by hardware-based, 256-bit AES encryption to guard sensitive information in case the drive is lost or stolen. And when encountering brute-force attacks, the drive locks down and reformats after 10 intrusion attempts.
  • newegg Fast Speed The DataTraveler Vault Privacy Edition provides high data transfer rates of up to 24MB/sec. read and up to 10MB/sec. write, meaning you need not to wait too long during data transfers.
  • newegg Physical Strength The durable aluminum casing confidently protects the flash drive from accidental drops and bumps. And in compliance with IEC 60529 IPX8 specification, the DataTraveler Vault provides up to 4 ft waterproof capability for added protection.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat flash drive

Pros: 256-bit AES encryption built into the hardware. Drive will not mount until the password is entered in and will format after 10 attempts. That it will work on Linux (v2.6.x) and Mac OS (10.5+) platforms so it's not just limited to Windows based systems.

Cons: So far nothing.

Other Thoughts: I have been buying these drives for the place I work at for several months now and decided to buy one of my own. That way I know how to use one if I am asked and also with studying for the Security+ exam I felt this would be a good purchase as well.

Thus far I have been impressed with the flash drive. I like the features of the drive and also how Kingston has other models available and additional layers of protection so that way an organization has more options of secure flash drives based on how much the files need to be encrypted.

A few reviewers have complained about write speeds but let me ask you this question. Are you more concerned how fast the drive can read/write files or how secure the files are on that flash drive. The more secure the flash drive whether it be from Hardware, software or a combination of both the slower it will be. Personally I would rather the drive take a performance hit than have it write files fast and have no encryption. You can't have your cake and eat it too.

If you need more Hardware based encryption than what the this flash can do then go with the Data Traveler 4000, 5000, and 6000 series flash drives. Those flash drives have more encryption built into them. And those are slower but again you have to choose between performance or how secure it is.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat for what it is!

Pros: hardware encryption, Admin rights NOT required. Acceptable read/write speed.

Cons: Maybe the physical dimensions compared to modern USB flash memory. But the encryption hardware demands a bit of size premium.

Minor: wish the "keyring hole" could accept an actual keyring.

Other Thoughts: The read speeds allow the viewing of a moderate quality video with no issue. It keeps you personal data safe from the average prying eye. While not FIPS rated, it is secured by AES 256. Furthermore, if that file is particularly sensitive, secure it using Truecrypt software and make it double secure (kingston HW + Truecrypt SW). A slight write speed penalty due to the "on the fly" encryption while writing the file. Smaller than my first USB drive, but much more secure.

Have not yet tested the failsafe "10 wrong guesses = data format"

4 out of 5 eggsSecure & Easy

Pros: If you want everything AES encrypted on your USB drive, this one is for you. Easy to use - everything loads directly from USB drive (i.e. no CD).

Cons: Read speed is fast. Write speed a little disappointing.
For 201 MB consisting of 477 files in 39 folders: Reads took 10 sec = 20 MB/sec. Writes took 70 sec = 2.8 MB/sec. For my old 512 Mbyte Corsair USB this took 10 sec read and 35 sec write (so writes about 2X Kingston DTV = 5.6 MB/sec)

Other Thoughts: Nice waterproof aluminum case with cap that clips on the end. Approved by my company's IT for proprietary info. I like everything about this USB drive, except the write speed - if only it was closer to the 10 MB/sec advertised. Perhaps with larger files it would be faster.
