5 out of 5 eggsBig Improvement over Previous Model

Pros: Good upgrade from previous model SV100.
Small file performance is noticeably faster.
Shipped with latest firmware for last several months.
Inexpensive Windows boot drive.

Cons: none so far

Other Thoughts: Our original SV100 64GB model had the file-writing slowdown problem which was a problem for several different brands of SSDs.
We sent it to Kingston and they replaced it with this newer model SV200. Since much of what we all do every day on our computers involves reading and writing small size files, we noticed the improvement with this drive right away. Even though the computer is only a SATA II type this little Kingston SSD has snappy performance for boot-up time, opening files and documents, opening Chrome browser, loading internet pages, Microsoft Office, etc. For anyone who already has a big enough regular hard drive but and wants to speed up their computer this is a good, cost-effective way to do it. Store most of your photos, videos and music on the bigger regular hard drive and install Windows 7 or Windows 8 on the SSD and ... zoom ... away you go!

3 out of 5 eggsFirmware Rescue

Pros: Reliable drive when Firmware is kept up to date.

Cons: The original Firmware was flawed. TRIM was disabled, and the drive would overheat and nearly come to a crawl. The latest Firmware (e120506a) corrects many issues as well speeds up the drive.
The firmware is "Destructive" though so it will wipe the drive. You will have to make an image of the drive with cloning software like Acronis True Image Home. When the firmware has been updated, allow one reboot, then re-insert the image from your backup back onto the SSD.

1 out of 5 eggsJunk

Pros: None.

Cons: Literally died within the hour of using the drive. I thought others just had bad experiences with this drive. Clearly they aren't alone. Even worse is that even Newegg isn't even willing to refund the drive so it was a complete waste of my money.

4 out of 5 eggsCheap SSD

Pros: It's cheap! Casing is nice and sturdy.
Mine came with updated firmware already on it.

Cons: It's definitely a last-generation SSD in terms of speed.

Other Thoughts: I like this drive. It's slow, but still faster than a mechanical drive. It worked perfectly for the fanless server I was building.

Pros: NOTE: The new firmware is available. (Not an owner)

Cons: You probably will have to update the firmware yourself.

2 out of 5 eggsPoor Write Performance

Pros: This drive was sent to me as a replacement for a discontinued 64GB drive whose cells went out on it way too early. Stated Read speeds on this drive is what you get. Snappy performance in that regard, loads everything very fast for a low end SSD.

Let me say, I am thoroughly impressed with the read speeds so I am not just bashing Kingston but the con below should be enough to keep anyone thinking about this drive to find something else until they fix it.

Cons: HUGE Con. Write performance with this drive is awful. 18-35MB/sec sequential on a fresh install of Windows 7 64-bit? Though you may think you will not write often to this drive after tweaking settings to increase the life of the drive, don't forget there are numerous Windows update, driver updates for video cards (latest Nvidia took 8 minutes to install because the drive writes in slow 'bursts') etc.

This magical firmware that's been promised for a couple months now is still nowhere in sight. It took, no lie, 5 minutes to move 1GB file from a 7200rpm hdd as the first 200MB were 95MB/sec then crashed to 10MB/sec.

Other Thoughts: Again I am not bashing Kingston as they've taken care of my previous dead drive and gave me this one in its stead but wow, I cannot recommend this drive with its current WRITE performance.

1 out of 5 eggsAtrocious Write Speeds

Pros: The drive's screw holes lined up with my mounting bracket. And that's about it.

Cons: The V200 is junk. I put a fresh Windows 7 install on it and immediately noticed serious perf issues of my whole system when writing to the SSD (which didn't occur when writing to my data HD.) CrystalDiskMark turned up abysmal write speeds which corroborated this. I don't have the time to wait for a firmware update so Kingston is taking this drive back for a refund.

Other Thoughts: Despite 2 bad drives in 2 weeks, Kingston customer support was awesome. (I actually didn't purchase this drive, instead it was sent to me when I RMA'ed my Kingston SNV425 - which was great until it failed). I contacted Kingston about the replacement V200's horrific performance and requested a refund which they granted. Their customer service is attentive, friendly, capable, and informed - a pleasure to deal with. At least that was my experience, FWIW.

1 out of 5 eggsSSD_Tester

Pros: Has not caught fire yet, or done anything else really unexpected

Cons: Follow-up: worst purchase on Newegg ever. This weekend, I am replacing this "SSD" with another drive. Extremely slow, and loss of data. Appreciate Kingston writing on my above review, but they ceratinly are not offering to give me my money back, and not even to think the loss in terms of data. Never again a Kingston product for me after this experience.

1 out of 5 eggsJunk

Pros: Very cheap - - - for a reason!

Cons: The speeds are like the earliest-stage SSDs about 3-4 years ago. Write speeds are a fraction of what the manufacturer claims

Other Thoughts: Another lesson learned why some things are cheap - usually for a reason

Manufacturer Response:

Kingtson Customers:
We've recently discovered a sequential write slowdown affecting our V200 series drives. We have identified the issue and are diligently working on a fix. While performance benchmarks may seem slow in certain environments, real world drive performance should still reflect that of an SSD with swift application loading, quick boot times and shutdowns. It's important to note that the drive's data integrity remains uncompromised and is unaffected by this slowdown. We apologize for any frustration this issue has caused and we intend to resolve it as quickly as possible. We greatly appreciate your patience while we resolve this matter.
