1 out of 5 eggsBeware of RAID on these drives

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 Series MZ-7TD120BW 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Good ratings and speed

Cons: Had major problems getting these drives to work on a MSI A75MA-G55 motherboard when using RAID. They work fine as long as you are not using the RAID function. Tried MSI SB700, SB800 & SB900 series drivers. Did all firmware updates on drives & MB's. Even did a Beta BIOS update on the MSI board but no luck. The NewEgg site states these are compatible with RAID but they won't work with this configuration. We replaced both SSD drives with the Samsung 830 SSD drives & they worked great the first try. MSI & Samsung have been made aware of the problem. Hopefully they fix the problem.

1 out of 5 eggsRuined My Christmas

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 Series MZ-7TD120BW 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: don't know. it's an SSD, so it must have some resale value on craigslist or something

Cons: This SSD "includes" Norton Ghost to copy the existing HDD OS to the SSD. The included instructions detail how to download, install and use it. I tried to follow the instructions for a drive I gave my son for Christmas to help his PC get a bit of a speed boost. There is no valid license key included anywhere in the packaging. We can't get the Norton Ghost software license to work and we can't get the OS or anything else to copy from the HDD to the SSD. This is worthless to us in this state.

Other Thoughts: unless you intend to install an OS from scratch, don't bother

1 out of 5 eggsStarted Dying after 6 months

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 Series MZ-7TD120BW 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Fastest thing I've ever seen.

Cons: Took until now to become fully unusable. Reloaded several times with the last load lasting less than a day before it crashed again.

Other Thoughts: Contacted a Samsung Total Tech Solutions, Inc.
Samsung Factory Service – SSD & Memory Department and all they're willing to do under the warranty is replace this drive with a recertified drive. I find that completely unacceptable.

1 out of 5 eggsCan't return for a refund - Beware!

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 Series MZ-7TD120BW 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Drive is fast, stable, and highly recommended.

Cons: None for the drive, but Newegg wouldn't allow me to change my mind and ask for a refund on this item. I am used to being able to return an item if I notify them within the first week that I don't want the item. This item has a no refund policy. It only allows you to exchange the samsung drive within the first 30 days. The market for ssd drives is hot and drives frequently go on sale online. This drive was cheaper elsewhere and I wanted to return it for a refund.

Other Thoughts: Be aware of the no refund policy for this ssd drive.

1 out of 5 eggsVery Fast + 6 months later = Dead!!!

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 Series MZ-7TD120BW 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Very Fast and quick boot when it worked

Cons: Died 6 months later after a very light amount of use and lost all my data, thought I would get at least five years out of this.

1 out of 5 eggsNot Persistence

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 Series MZ-7TD120BW 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Fast Data access

Cons: Data was not persistant after being stored for a few months. I have never had these issues with HDDs and I am very upset. These drives are duds I hate to say it. I cannot rely on them to store anything anymore.

Other Thoughts: I should fork up the cash on getting a better SSD. Why did Samsung fail me on this one!?

1 out of 5 eggsDOA desperately trying to RMA this

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 Series MZ-7TD120BW 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Dead on arrival; DOA. No pros for bad quality control

Cons: Doing a build with asus fm2a85 v-pro and AMD A10 5800k. Lots of neat stuff. Everything has fired up (dvd, hard drive, all other parts including fans, psu, etc.) except this thing. I swapped the cables to the WD hard drive which I knew were working into the SSD and rebooted. Still no life.

Other Thoughts: Puts a sour taste on what is otherwise a successful build. I am trying to get a Seagate at 2x the cost because I don't have time for bad quality control.

I am worried that the server is trying to get me after one week of ownership and just installed today to direct my concerns to Samsung. Seems to me Newegg should send it to 'em and let me buy something else. My 2c. Even if they send me a new one I don't want it. I guess I would sell it NIB.

1 out of 5 eggsNot for AMD new builds

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 Series MZ-7TD120BW 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: No Pros from me. This is obviously competing in the boot drive market and for the behavior on a brand new boot not to accommodate AMD is a problem in my book.

Cons: Like other people here, I could not get my new build (ASUS F2 A85 V Pro + AMD's A10 5800k) to show any sign of the Samsung 840 in the UEFI (bios). The Western digital was there. The DVD was there. No Samsung. I swapped known working wires and known working SATA ports and rebooted and still nothing.

Other Thoughts: After I read manual I saw one line which caught my eye, that on AMDs you need to get an Intel driver in order to make the Samsung work. If that is the issue, it means that you have to have a working computer and go out and hunt for the Intel driver and hope you get the right one and download it and that then you can initiate your new build and (you hope) install the OS.

To me, that is just saying that they don't want the business of AMD customers. I see on the OCZ comments a lot of AMD users who were quite happy. So I'm thinking there is an issue here.

In any case I have an RMA and hopefully the change to OCZ will resolve the issues. It may be that there is some other issue at work, the drive could as easily be defective, but it seems to me a company like Samsung would want to put something in the firmware which says, "Oh, I'm on an AMD chipset, I should signal my existence this way." But of course computer equipment is very squirrely and you never really know what's going to happen when you turn a bunch of stuff on.

If can hook it up to an existing computer that has an OS that says "Oh gosh what is this?" and then goes out and finds drivers (Win7 and later) you may have success. But if you're building your own system with AMD mobo and chipset, beware.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 Series MZ-7TD120BW 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Could not install Windows 7 64 bit the evening it arrived. Thought it was me. Windows was unable to write to the device. Next morning seemed to work OK. Installed Windows 7, got the updates done. Then the drive started to slow down. Got several freezes.Windows took 5 mins to boot. Then could not boot from the drive. Not impressed.

Cons: Shipping it back for another one. I am sure it is just a DUD. I have read good reviews, someone has to get a bad one, it is the law of averages. This is an electronic device, usually they fail when you first set them up and six days after the warranty expires..

Other Thoughts: Are SSD really ready for prime time? I am back to the spinners on the machine. I think it is wise to have a backup of everything. Will update the review once I get the replacement back.
