5 out of 5 eggsGreat

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE120BW 2.5" 120GB SATA III TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Speed, Price and Reliability

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I have purchased quite a few of these drives for personal use, as well as for hard drive replacements within my company. Every drive has so far perfectly.

5 out of 5 eggsWhat a change!

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE120BW 2.5" 120GB SATA III TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Fast, fast and fast again. Last time I built a computer "from scratch" was 2004, so I may be a bad judge. I haven't done much with it yet, but coming from a (2007) SATA1 RAID 0 array that I thought was pretty decent is a real eye opener.

Cons: Needed a firmware update before installing windows (do-able after?), needed to be properly partitioned using the windows install disk before installation. Needed some OS tweaking after installation (fault of the drive, or fault of the OS?). Not really cons, just facts of life. Felt like typing.

Other Thoughts: I first installed windows in AHCI mode, or whatever it's called. Then I tried to switch the BIOS to RAID to set up an array, and got the BSOD. Windows couldn't auto fix the issue, and I had no idea how, so I took the easy route and reinstalled windows. I did say Average tech knowledge.

5 out of 5 eggsFast!

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE120BW 2.5" 120GB SATA III TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: 1st SSD - very nice, very small, very QUIET( duh - no moving parts)! Loaded Win 7 64 bit on it with no problems. All other data on a 2nd SATA 3 drive.

Cons: Wish I had two!

Other Thoughts: Should've gotten it earlier

2 out of 5 eggsStarted great then stopped working

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE120BW 2.5" 120GB SATA III TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Boots Windows fast

Cons: Stopped working after 3-4 months

Other Thoughts: I installed a fresh copy of Windows 7 on this SSD when I first got it home. It worked great for 2-3 months, but then Windows started randomly shutting down. Reinstalling Windows 7 after the crashes began seemed to fix the problem, but it started up again in a few days.

I thought my computer hardware may have been bad, so I ran some tests and replaced my power supply. The crashes continued, and I decided I would do one last test by using my previous hard drive instead of the SSD. I have had no crashes since switching over to my old hard drive, which has led me to believe that the SSD is the problem.

I gave it 2 stars since I probably just got a defective one.

1 out of 5 eggsResponse to Samsung's inane reply to my earlier review

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE120BW 2.5" 120GB SATA III TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: None

Cons: Many

Other Thoughts: Samsung said: 'On systems with two drives or more (e.g. "C:", "D:", and "E:" drives) with the operating system installed on the "C:" drive, only the first two drives will be cloned. The "System" partition that is created during Windows installation is automatically replicated.'

In other words, Samsung's "migration software" will not copy a drive with more than three partitions, as I said earlier. In addition, the manufacturer of this drive doesn't know the difference between a drive and a partition, manual and automatic, or what their program actually does!

Samsung said: "When Hibernation Mode is enabled, the Hibernation file will be created. If you do not want this file, please disable the Hibernation Mode."

In other words, as I said earlier, the Samsung "Magician" software will create and unneeded and unwanted Hibernation file. Yes, you can disable Hibernation mode, but why should you have to do so? And, as I also said earlier, you can also disable the other system changes this useless and harmful software does --- if you backed everything up first --- but why should you have to do so? Why should the "optimization software" do the opposite of optimization?

Samsung said: To help us better assist you, please let me know the exact models of your two Asus AMD motherboards."

M4A88 and M5A97, but I will bet any amount of money that you do not "better assist" anyone.

And finally, I have received no less than 20 telephone calls from Samsung this week asking if I sent in a SDD to be repaired! They have not offered to address any of the problems that were reported, and they don't seem to know that they have already sent me replacements (with the same defects as the originals). They just want to ask me if I sent them my product two months ago.

To paraphrase GE's slogan: The name goes on before the quality goes in.

5 out of 5 eggsoverall great SSD

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE120BW 2.5" 120GB SATA III TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: if you don't need much capacity and don't need the absolute best performance this SSD is a great choice. It is silent (obviously, being an SSD), small, light, produces nearly no heat, consumes little power and performs well given the price. I've purchased dozens of these (and the Samsung 840 pro) over the past year as it has become my standard goto for a low capacity entry level SSD.

Cons: the diagnostics API could be a bit fuller, exposing more of the drive via a SMART API.

5 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: SAMSUNG 840 EVO MZ-7TE120BW 2.5" 120GB SATA III TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Pros: Awesome upgrade from standard hard drive. Has worked great.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Does cause some complication in Linux install, if you'd like to minimize excessive writes. Well worth it though.
