This review is from: SanDisk Extreme 64GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model SDCZ80-064G-A46

Pros: this flash drive may seem pricy, but it is by far the best investment ive ever made as an OS installer

compared to cd installers this drive as about 100% faster and compared to usb 2.0 drives it still installs about 20% faster. (using a usb 2.0 port to install windows from on both, as you cannot install windows 7 on a usb 3.0 port without special driver work arounds which end up taking longer than simply installing over 2.0 in the first place)

I have it partitioned into 3 drives 2 8 gb's and one 44 gb and have osx 10.9 on one with tonymac's bootloader on it and another for windows 7.

the drive actually hits advertised speeds and the write speed is where the sandisk usb really shines. there is a review on tomshardware I believe where usb 3.0 drives are benchmarked and for the 64 gb you get I don't think $50 I paid is too out of hand considering it gets near ssd performance in an incredibly small form factor

the drive physically is very nice looking and feels like a quality device with an incredibly nice locking slider and dim blue led behind the slider. it is no so bright that its annoying, but not so dim that you cannot tell when its being accessed.

I could not have been more satisfied about this purchase and do not regret spending a little extra on a usb drive as it will continue to be my OS installer for years to come.

Cons: like all usb's it is easier to lose. please be carefull! these are not you every day throw away usb drive!

Other Thoughts: if you see this usb on sale for under 1$ per gb pick one up. while 64 gb may seem over kill now and the 200+ mb/s seems overkill, they will be mainstream in a few years and you will have benefited from that performance for years

4 out of 5 eggsGood, probably better if you get the current version

This review is from: SanDisk Extreme 64GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model SDCZ80-064G-A46

Pros: Easily the fastest flash drive I've used.
It's SanDisk.

Cons: A number of the units in circulation are recognized as fixed drives by Windows which definitely interferes with the functionality of some tools that only operate on removable media.

Other Thoughts: If I had received one of the newer units that was more sensibly designed and was recognized as removable media, it would be a 5 star without hesitation.
SanDisk should offer an exchange program for those of us with the Fixed drives.

1 out of 5 eggsNot Bootable! Shows Up As Fixed Drive

This review is from: SanDisk Extreme 64GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model SDCZ80-064G-A46

Pros: Very fast.

Cons: NewEgg still has some of the old stock of these drives, which show up as "Fixed Drive" and are therefore not usable as bootable drives. When that is one of the main reasons you are buying these, that is a pretty huge con.

Other Thoughts: SanDisk has two versions of these in the supply channels. They are indistinguishable from each other as far as model number, packaging, etc. The only way to know which one you got is to unpack it and plug it into a PC and see if in Windows Explorer it shows up under "Hard Disk Drives" or "Devices with Removable Storage" when you click "Computer" in the left nav (Windows 7).

One version shows up as a "Fixed" local drive. This version cannot be used as a bootable USB drive because the BIOS won't recognize it as bootable.

The other version, which is the more recently manufactured one, shows up as a "Removable" drive. This one may be used as a bootable drive.

SanDisk is the only manufacturer that has this problem. I have contacted them via email and confirmed my thoughts. They admitted that they made a mistake and misinterpretted a certain Windows 8 certification requirement. That caused them to initially switch their manufacturing in late 2013 from Removable to Fixed. Sometime in the Spring 2014, after all the customer complaints about this issue, they realized their mistake and switched their manufacturing back from Fixed to Removable.

Unfortunately, NewEgg and other resellers still have at least some old stock of this drive. I ordered mine in late July 2014 and got the Fixed version of it. Others who ordered recently got the Removable version. So it's a cr4p shoot at this point.

The sad part is that there is no way to know. Shame on SanDisk for their extremely poor communication practices. The new version should have been a new revision, clearly labeled on the packaging. They followed one technical blunder with another.

5 out of 5 eggsSanDisk Extreme USB 3.0 Flash Drive

This review is from: SanDisk Extreme 64GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model SDCZ80-064G-A46

Pros: Fast, light, compact, and retractable. I formatted this to NTFS to take advantage of larger individual file sizes and benchmarked with HD Tune Pro with very satisfactory read/write speed on my laptop USB 3.0 ports.

Cons: None so far. I am not crazy about leds, but this one is actually pretty dim, as to not be so much of a distraction in ambient lighting. In a dark room it would probably be a bit of an issue for me.

Other Thoughts: I have been looking for a decent higher capacity USB 3.0 flash drive, and this appears to be the one to get based upon multiple sites bench-marking it with a variety of different applications. This drive is always in the top three.

4 out of 5 eggsFast, but not as fast as advertised.

This review is from: SanDisk Extreme 64GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model SDCZ80-064G-A46

Pros: Benchmarked with AS SSD sequential yields read speeds of ~190MB/s and write speeds of ~185MB/s. That's better than 99% of USB3 drives on the market.

Cons: Not as fast as advertised, but still fast.

5 out of 5 eggsImpressive!

This review is from: SanDisk Extreme 64GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model SDCZ80-064G-A46

Pros: Very fast drive! Did some benchmarking...random read speed on Intel USB 3.0 was 280 mb/s, and random write is 188 mb/s. Transferred 22 GB to the drive in just over 6 minutes. Highest transfer hit close to 300 mb/s and slowest (4K or less files) hit 42 mb/s. Overall a very nice performing drive. Well constructed...should be pretty durable.

Cons: None that I can see

Other Thoughts: The drive comes formatted FAT 32. I reformatted NTFS, even though exFat might be a bit faster. Your choice.

5 out of 5 eggsOutstanding Write Speed

This review is from: SanDisk Extreme 64GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model SDCZ80-064G-A46

Pros: Super-fast performance for a USB flashdrive.

Leaves most other brands in the dust, and the speed on reading & writing documents and other small files (like Windows operating system files) is 6 to 10 times better than competing models from Patriot or Lexar or Kingston.

Lifetime Warranty is the best you can get. Compare to other brands' 1-year to 5-year warranty.

Cons: Regular price is expensive!

Other Thoughts: There are several brands of high-performance flashdrives that have good speed for transferring large files and this Sandisk Extreme is among them. In addition, the Sandisk is blazing fast when working with small files and with mixed files and folders - it simply blows away other contenders.

2 out of 5 eggsSandisk Extreme

This review is from: SanDisk Extreme 64GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model SDCZ80-064G-A46

Pros: The drive is fast and Sandisk support was good

Cons: The first drive stopped being recognized as USB3 but Sandisk replaced it without a problem.

The drive is delicate. If used on laptops be very careful. Mine is damaged now. I repair laptops so it got quite a bit of use storing and replacing files.

Other Thoughts: I really liked the drive while it was working but it needs a tougher design between the plug and the board

5 out of 5 eggsFERRY. R. perhaps I can help

This review is from: SanDisk Extreme 64GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model SDCZ80-064G-A46

Pros: The obvious per specs

Cons: It isn't 50 cents per usable gig like most 32 GB usb thumb drives are.

Other Thoughts: FERRY R. A reason why your sandisk extreme usb 3.0 flash drive is reading and writing at usb 2.0 speeds is:
1. The flash drive is defective and a RMA is in order.
2. You're plugging it into a USB "2.0" port instead of a properly working usb 3.0 port.
3. If you are plugging it into a 3.0 port, that port or set of those ports on your motherboard or usb 3.0 hub's device driver must not be installed or the correct driver installed.
4. Usb 3.0 is turned off in bios or EUFI. I've encountered a few motherboards that allow this service. Yes it is weird and I agree it is asinine.

I hope this helps. I banged my head against my desk trying to figure out why my 3TB Western Digital My book wasn't copying my blu ray movies from my 3TB internal seagate to the My Book at faster than 31 MB/s until I realized my device 's connection on the back had been bent/damaged. Thus why I can only use it on usb 2.0 ports. When connecting to a 3.0 port, the device never shows up during POST and windows explorer.
