5 out of 5 eggsLike it so well I bought another!

This review is from: PNY Prevail Elite SSD9SC480GEDA-PB 2.5" 480GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) 10K Endurance

Pros: I purchased one of these a couple months back and continue to be extremely impressed for the performance! This is hands down the fastest SSD I have ever used or owned, not that I have experience with dozens of them. While the Mushkin Enhanced Chronos I used to have is a nice drive, this one performs better and has claims of like 3x the life.

While I have never worn out any SSD, the eMLC is a nice safety margin that I enjoy having. It should get 10k writes at a very minimum and might far beyond that.

I purchased one that must have been an older unit still in circulation. It had a 3.x firmware. These are impossible to update. PNY replaced the drive with one that had the updateable 5.x firmware so the problem was solved.

These drives are also assembled in the USA with foreign and domestic parts. It is nice to buy a high-tech product largely made by US workers! I was glad to see it isn't another China product.

I have also purchased a 240GB version of this for someone else and it is also a nice product. I have no reason to expect the 120GB version would be any different.

Cons: None except the high price. As with most other things, you get what you pay for!

Older versions with 3.x firmware cannot be updated but PNY RMAed one with this issue for one with 5.x firmware.

Other Thoughts: If you don't mind paying a premium price for a premium product, this is the way to go. Sure, there are likely slightly faster SSDs out there but this one is no slug and has claims of 3x the life of conventional MLC SSDs.

5 out of 5 eggsIncredible speed and high claims of long life!

This review is from: PNY Prevail Elite SSD9SC480GEDA-PB 2.5" 480GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) 10K Endurance

Pros: I recently purchased this drive for an additional laptop I bought and am completely impressed with the performance. I decided to get the 480GB version as the 120GB and 160GB units I have were just a little tight for space. My 120GB is a Mushkin Enhanced Chronos Deluxe while the 160GB is an Intel 320 series. While the Mushkin is a better drive on paper, I never noticed much of a difference between the two in real world performance.

Based on the published specs, I expected this PNY to be a tad bit slower than my Mushkin drive but figured this trade-off was more than worthwhile for the claimed 10k PE cycles on this drive. I expected any differences to be negligible much like the difference between the Intel and Mushkin I currently own.

I cloned the 120GB Mushkin to this 480GB PNY Prevail Elite and moved the 120GB to a different laptop. The laptop containing the PNY immediately seemed more responsive and snappy but I thought it was simply psychological. I ran a Windows assessment anyway just to see. While the Mushkin scored a 7.8 or 7.9 depending on the day, this one scored an 8.1. I didn't even realize the score could go that high. I haven't run any other benchmarks but will say that this will likely outperform the Mushkin for sure.

Part of this may be due to the overprovisioning built into most SandForce controller drives. While this is actually a 512GB drive, some of this is reserved to increase both the performance and lifespan of the drive. While my 120GB drive was well over halfway full, this 480GB is now only 20% full, if that. I am wondering if part of this insanely fast performance is related to the fact that my drive is essentially empty. My drive came with firmware 5.04 but I immediately upgraded it to 5.05 before doing any testing or use of the computer. I am not sure if that makes a difference but figured I would point out this detail.

I am running Windows 8 too. Sure, I have disabled the horrid stock GUI and made it look more like Windows 7 but the under the hood parts of this OS seem to be designed and built around SSD performance so this also helps.

Cons: Price is high but worth it for the enthusiast! The cost is definitely higher than other similar products but this appears to simply be a better drive without compromises.

Other Thoughts: This is the drive for any enthusiast who wants insane performance and long life if you are willing to pay for this combination of qualities. While there may be some faster drives out there, none come close to matching the guaranteed write cycles of this drive!

I always used to think of PNY as making more "consumer grade" products and it took a little convincing for me to jump on this one but the reviews combined with the claims and the not so consumer grade price persuaded me to make the buy.

If you can get past the high cost, you will not be unhappy with the PNY Prevail Elite.
