5 out of 5 eggsDoes the job and does it well

This review is from: Transcend 8GB Compact Flash (CF) Flash Card Model TS8GCF133

Pros: Great price, and does as good a job as the more expensive ScanDisk cards. I use it to record digital audio (wave 44.1/24) on my Tascam HD-P2. After I transfer the audio to the PC, I erase the cards and use them again... and again... and again.

Cons: None so far

1 out of 5 eggsNOT FOR FIREWALLS OR OS DRIVE

This review is from: Transcend 8GB Compact Flash (CF) Flash Card Model TS8GCF133

Pros: It was cheap. It's a CF card. DMA.

Cons: Can't install an OS of any sort on this CF. Tried FreeBSD, m0n0wall, vyatta, and pfsense. They install and then upon reboot it just sits there or drops to grub rescue prompt. Apparently these USED to work as "fixed disk" so you could install OS on them for use in a Firewall/Diskless client etc. but transcend decided to remove that in a new firmware.

Other Thoughts: WHY would you RANDOMLY change the firmware to make this unusable as a fixed disk? You are ultimately screwing everyone who buys this card for that purpose, which many of us do. Now I have a useless CF card and I have to buy another. Great. It wont be Transcend, that's for sure.

2 out of 5 eggsNot fixed disk

This review is from: Transcend 8GB Compact Flash (CF) Flash Card Model TS8GCF133

Pros: It works as a memory card

Cons: Was led to believe that this CF card was fixed disk mode. (By forums online not transcend or newegg) But it isn't. It shows up in windows and linux as removable and I am unable to change it.

I also have issues getting a gpt table with HFS+ and ext3 partitions to not get corrupted... (Editing made in parted 2.3) Very strange behavior on this card (Using debian wheezy and squeeze)

Other Thoughts: I will be buying another brand and trying this again... Hopefully someone I know has a use for a free 8GB CF card

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great as the OS drive for my OpenMediaVault Server

This review is from: Transcend 8GB Compact Flash (CF) Flash Card Model TS8GCF133

Pros: Using this with a CF-to-SATA adapter as the OS drive for an older computer running OpenMediaVault. Had no problems getting the motherboard to recognize it as a fixed disk (with or without ACHI enabled) nor any problems installing the OS to it. The server boots within seconds and I don't have to waste space on a larger drive. Plus these are cheap enough that I can get a spare as a backup copy and be up and running again in an instant if the card fails.

Cons: Wouldn't be fast enough to run applications and games off of, but not an issue as I'm only using it to store the OS between reboots or in case of power loss.
