4 out of 5 eggsGood performance, but mislabeled

This review is from: Patriot Supersonic Magnum 64GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model PEF64GSMNUSB

Pros: Good, fast USB 3.0 transfers on both Mac OS and Windows 7.

Cons: The metal case was labeled 128 GB even though it's a 64 GB model (both based on what I purchased and the capacity in Disk Utility). It's also a bit wider than I like, and blocks an adjacent USB port on my MacBook Air.

2 out of 5 eggsHow not to do a high storage USB 3.0 flash drive

This review is from: Patriot Supersonic Magnum 64GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model PEF64GSMNUSB

Pros: Fast speeds
Looks nice

Cons: Bad housing
Big clunky design
Not as fast as it says
Heat problems
Frequently reinstalls drivers

Other Thoughts: I bought this when it first came out as it was the first of its kind and seemed like the best on the market. After trying it out the first time I noticed that the 100+ read/write speeds was clearly a lie, I barely got over 60mbps write using fastcopy on a usb 3.0 port, 8 core processor, 32gb ram computer. A few weeks later the flash drive fell out of the housing when I tried to insert it into a laptop at work. I had to tape it together until I found some super glue.

The housing has a big, clunky, poor design which falls apart because when you insert it, you're actually pushing it apart from the adhesive that holds it together. It's also so big so if you have adjacent ports, you're going to have to remove one so make room for this big thing.

I transferred about 750gb worth of files from my old laptop using this and it got really hot. Hopefully the heat doesn't destroy the drive, but I'm sure it also played a part into the housing falling apart as enough heat can mess with the adhesive.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome

This review is from: Patriot Supersonic Magnum 64GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model PEF64GSMNUSB

Pros: This flash drive is amazingly fast. If you want something fast and don't mind paying the price, you need to get this flash drive. So far it hasn't failed yet. Bought it for $80 64GB on sale.

Cons: None for now.

2 out of 5 eggsAs Fast as Advertised, but as Unreliable as Unadvertised

This review is from: Patriot Supersonic Magnum 64GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model PEF64GSMNUSB

Pros: Very fast write speed - our tests on a PCIe USB 3.0 card with SATA 3.0 spinner drives show around 85-100 MB/s write time. Read times are as fast if not faster.

Cons: * Unreliable - out of 40 we have purchased, 6 out of 20 failed right out of the box and 3 out of 20 failed in the field. The 6 that failed out of the box show up as "Removable Drive" in My Computer and are essentially read only devices. I haven't been able to get information about the field failures yet, but that's inconsequential to me because the failure rate is totally unacceptable.
* Too Wide - you cannot use a USB device in a nearby port due to the width of this device.

Other Thoughts: Note that the ones I purchased were not through NewEgg, but through a different supplier. I am exchanging the last batch of 20 that we purchased where 6 failed immediately. I can't be confident they will not fail while in use in the field.

4 out of 5 eggsFAST, but protective cap is poorly designed

This review is from: Patriot Supersonic Magnum 64GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model PEF64GSMNUSB

Pros: The drive is FAST! BLAZING FAST! When connected to a computer that's optimized for USB 3, like a modern Mac, I'm able to transfer HUGE multi-gigabyte files in seconds, or at most a minute or two.

Cons: The protective cap doesn't fit securely at all, and is way too easily popped off, like when sitting in a backpack. It takes very little force to accidentally remove the cap. As a result, the connector for the drive can be easily damaged. If it wasn't for the poor construction and design of the cap, I would easily give this drive a 5/5 rating.

The drive is also very wide, so if you have USB ports that are close together and oriented horizontally, the drive won't fit with other plugged in devices.

Other Thoughts: If you can make sure that you don't damage the drive connector (since the poorly designed and constructed protective cap isn't at all reliable), then this drive is fantastic, due to it's sheer SPEED.

5 out of 5 eggsThe Best I've EVER used

This review is from: Patriot Supersonic Magnum 64GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model PEF64GSMNUSB

Pros: I got this when it 1st came out. The speed was good then but better now. USB3 on the newer chipset are getting even better and my latest build with large transferred to SSD drives beat the write/read speeds. On a two year old laptop with a USB3 port to a standard HD it does about 1/2 of rated speeds but still kills USB2 drives.

Cons: None and I beat on this thing daily and the paint about 1/2 gone.

Other Thoughts: Some of the people complaining about corrupt files may be they are not using the eject function and leaving files open.

I use this to transfer large NEF files off the laptop to a faster desktop.

4 out of 5 eggsSpeeds so fast your face will literally melt.

This review is from: Patriot Supersonic Magnum 64GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model PEF64GSMNUSB

Pros: Super fast, relatively affordable, looks awesome, and it has an aluminum shell.

Cons: Slightly higher price than other flash drives, but you get what you pay for. Also, I wish they made this device narrower, not so much of an issue with stacked USB ports but if it's side by side like my laptop it can run into

Other Thoughts: If you're tired of waiting for your files to transfer, this is the ticket to one of the best USB drives. I may have to purchase another one of these bad boys in a larger size.

4 out of 5 eggsmeh, its ok

This review is from: Patriot Supersonic Magnum 64GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model PEF64GSMNUSB

Pros: I gave it 4 eggs and not 5 because it has not died, hope I didn't just jinx myself.

Cons: it looses 1 egg because its not as fast as claimed, yes is runs on 3.0 controller, but its fine, the one nagging thing is the lack of an LED, Patriot are you listening to anyone? all the reviews on the web state the same, put a darn light on it already.

Other Thoughts: maybe next year the next batch (generation) will have an LED and be a bit faster, honestly its 2013 already speed these things up again, or someone invent a flash drive using thunderbolt and price it right, they will sell like hot cakes.

1 out of 5 eggswrite corruption

This review is from: Patriot Supersonic Magnum 64GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model PEF64GSMNUSB

Pros: ~100MB/sec

Cons: 1) Consistent file corruption when writing from my laptop to the Patriot Magnum. (No problem when writing same files to a USB3 external HDD, for comparison.) File corruption makes this unusable.
2) Physically too wide. Overlaps adjacent side-by-side USB port.

Other Thoughts: Too bad. This one is going back for a refund.
The Patriot Supersonic Magnum is fast enough to be usable - roughly 100MB/sec when writing or reading 50MB camera files. But it consistently gives write errors and corrupts files, so that kills it.
Also, it is physically too wide and overlaps adjacent side-by-side USB ports.

1 out of 5 eggscorrupts files - totally unacceptable

This review is from: Patriot Supersonic Magnum 64GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive Model PEF64GSMNUSB

Pros: No Pros.
I can't get it to write files without corrupting them.

Cons: Corrupts files.
Physically too big. Won't fit in side-by-side USB sockets when a device is in an adjacent socket.

Other Thoughts: This is going back for a refund. Very disappointing.

I tested it multiple times with various files and scenarios. It always corrupts some of the files I try to write to it. TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE.
It came formatted FAT32. I tried formatting it with exFAT and then with NTFS. Both quick and then full. Still no difference. Every attempt at write resulted in some corrupted files.
Also, it is so physically wide that it overlaps adjacent side-by-side USB sockets.

Tested with a folder of 100 RAW NEF camera files, each about 50MB in size, for a total of 5GB. Tested on 2 computers: desktop and laptop.
"Write" 55 sec = 91MB/sec.
Read 38 sec = 132 MB/sec.
Write is in quotes because it corrupts some of the files when it writes them.

With its speed, this could be a highly usable USB stick.
But because of the file corruption and physically unusable size, this product is a total failure. Very disappointing. I expected better from Patriot.
