Based on a cutting-edge new architecture, Vertex 2 Solid State Drives deliver unprecedented performance while maintaining an affordable storage solution for early adopters looking to update their systems with the latest technology. OCZ designed the Vertex 2 to excel in both sequential and random read/write rates to take your PC or notebook productivity to the next level, featuring superb 4KB random writes up to 50,000 IOPS to give a performance edge over the previous generation. Using the latest controller technology, Vertex 2 not only provides a faster, more responsive PC experience, but promotes cooler, quieter, and more energy efficient conditions compared to traditional mechanical hard drives. Built with SATA 3Gb/s, the Vertex 2 Series easily integrates into today’s mobile and desktop platforms and features TRIM support to optimize performance over the drive’s lifespan as the ultimate Windows7 notebook or desktop upgrade.

  • newegg SSD Storage Technology Unlike traditional hard disk drives, SSDs have no moving parts, resulting in a quiet, cool, highly reliable storage solution that also offers faster application loading and system responsiveness. And for laptops and netbooks, the lower power needs of SSD’s translate to extended battery life. Higher performance with more durability means you can be truly mobile with confidence.
  • newegg Better Performance Built with MLC NAND flash and the latest generation SandForce SF1200 controller featuring award winning DuraClass Technology, the OCZ Vertex 2 120GB SSD delivers industry-leading SSD reliability, performance, and power efficiency, with maximum read speed up to 285 MB/s and maximum write speed up to 275 MB/s, plus incredible random 4K write performance of 50,000 IOPS.
  • newegg TRIM Support The OCZ Vertex 2 Series SSD’s offer native TRIM support than can be enabled in Windows 7. Designed to maintain the performance of SSD at an optimal level over the lifetime of the drive, TRIM functions by actively deleting invalid data from the SSD’s memory cells to ensure that write operations perform at full speed. Since a memory block must be erased before it can be re-programmed, TRIM improves performance by pro-actively erasing pages containing invalid data, allowing the SSD to write new data without first having to perform a time-consuming erase command.

1 out of 5 eggsDied during install

Pros: not yet

Cons: Died 30 minutes into first OS install and disappeared from Bios.

Other Thoughts: Kept trouble shooting not willing to believe the drive had died so quickly out of the box and missed my 30 day return opportunity with Newegg. Now it looks like I will be stuck paying for RMA shipping every time it's replacement dies for the next 3 years. OCZ says the customer paying for RMA shipping is industry standard, but it's really industry minimum, especially for a near DOA product.

I'll update this review when I get to try out the drive some more.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, we are sorry for the problem and the inconvenience. We are confident that a new drive will work out fine for you.
Thank you

1 out of 5 eggsPoor RMA customer service

Pros: Fast drive, recognized just like any HDD.

Cons: My 1 egg rating is for the poor service I received while RMA-ing the product after it died.
It died just past the 30 day newegg return period, so I had to get it replaced by OCZ.
This seemed fine at first, until I found that I had to pay myself for the return postage to California - I'd had this $200+ product for 1 month, and I'm paying to return their dead product to them? How exactly does that work?

As far as I'm concerned, I just paid an extra $10 for this product, through no fault of my own.
It's their fault the product had a fault, they should be paying the shipping BOTH ways.

Other Thoughts: Any product can have a defect, die, under-perform - but it's the customer service you receive from the manufacturer that sets different brands apart.

They should have an account with UPS or fedex - OR send out the replacement with a UPS label to return the bad one - like so many other companies do.

It may have only been $10 for me to return it, but I shouldn't be paying a penny for their mistake.

Lets hope the new one they sent me stays alive longer. I'm now imaging incrementally, daily, to be safe - which probably negates the performance increase from a product like this.

1 out of 5 eggsNo Rebate??

Pros: Great Drive so far. Windows 7 starts up in half the time it used to. No problems with the drive itself.

Cons: um, yeah, the only reason I purchased this drive was because of the price. Came with a $30 rebate. Denied. Oh well, guess that's why your getting 1 egg OCZ.

Other Thoughts: Would probably give the drive 4 or 5 stars if it weren't for OCZ stealing money from me. Irritating!!

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, if you feel that your rebate was wrongly denied, please email and include your full name, address, product, and date and place of purchase. We will be happy to help and will see that all valid rebates are paid. Thank you

1 out of 5 eggsBeware!!!!!!

Pros: Fast, decent price.

Cons: I purchased 21 of these through two vendors (newegg and dell). Two of these have failed in less than 3 months. Yes, that would be a 10% failure rate so far. When I tried to warranty the item, they ignored all of the information I put in the initial trouble ticket, delayed the RMA by requiring redundant, useless info and arguing as to whether it was purchased at an authorized retailer despite the fact that both resellers are listed on THEIR site. Each email was followed by 24-36 hours of silence from them. Bottom line, my experience in the first 3 months is 10% failure rate, and 2-3 weeks delay in warranty service. Beware!!!!

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, we are very sorry for the problem. Our support system does require customer documentation, and we will always try to troubleshoot issues. We did not mean to upset you by asking you to respond. We are also sorry for the misunderstanding. Thank you

1 out of 5 eggsSo fast it's on fire... no literally, it's on fire.

Pros: It was screaming fast while it lasted, in much the same way that a plane is really fast until it hits the ground and explodes into a fireball .

Very quiet. It's especially quiet when it sits on my shelf of used parts that don't work. I hardly notice it's there!

Cons: If you go back and read my first review, I noticed a couple of problems with it lagging out while switching tabs in Firefox.

Well that was just the beginning of a downward spiral. Soon after I wrote that review I started getting a very odd glitch while gaming. My mouse would suddenly freeze the entire system up for about ten seconds whenever I moved it. Nothing would resolve this issue except a reboot, which I could still do because I could use the keyboard just fine as long as I didn't touch the mouse.

I did everything I could think of from updating every driver on my computer, to changing mice and even using secure erase to return the drive to factory defaults and then doing a fresh install of Windows.

Nothing at all worked, and in fact the problem is getting worse, instead of just the mouse freezing I now get random BSOD's or my entire system will hang.

Thew the old HDD back in... problems all vanished.

Other Thoughts: 1) Have a backup HDD ready if you buy one of these for when (not if) it fails.

2)They require:

- Very precise installation methods (You can't just plug it in and install the OS without a care like on HDD's)
- Installation of RST software
- Lots of OS tweaking (including poking around in your registry)
- Logging off of your computer overnight regularly in order for the drive to perform "garbage cleanup". (They do NOT do this during idle time like standard HDD's)
- They are very sensitive to overclocking (the first response to every complaint thread on their forums is to turn off all overclocking)
- Are sensitive to any kind of sleep or hibernate mode, and will often require a hard reboot to start the system.
- Are often not recognized by the BIOS from a cold boot.
- May not be recognized by BIOS at all unless it's the only SATA port plugged in (this was my first issue, I had to unplug every SATA port on my motherboard except the SSD before the BIOS would see it.

1 out of 5 eggsBroke in 3 weeks

Pros: This is my first SSD. I had installed Windows 7 x64 Pro to it on my laptop. Had everything running very smooth. Booted in 16 seconds to my Desktop.

Cons: I had my laptop tethered to my phone. I put my machine in standby so I could walk back to my desk. I pulled out the USB cord. Laptop never booted again. System did not recognize that there was even drive installed. I connected it to another computer in a USB drive dock. I could not see the drive in "My Computer." I am extremely sad, as I really liked the speed.

I submitted an RMA to Newegg. I dread getting another one, but they do not offer refunds, only replacement. This stinks. It is the first time I have had to return something to Newegg, and I have bought enough components to build three computers from them.

Now I need to figure out how to get Microsoft to reset my Technet subscription key for this install.

Other Thoughts: Do not save your documents on one of these drives. I am lucky I use a USB backup of all of them.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, we are sorry for the problem. Some systems have issues with SSD drives and stand by or sleep modes. We do have a new firmware version that should take care of this for you. Please visit our support forums at the link below and post in the Flash/SSD section for assistance. We will be happy to assist you. Thank you

1 out of 5 eggsResponses from OCZ Technology are misleading

Pros: OCZ Technology responds to negative feedback on NewEgg's review threads. (You can read my prior comment below for details.)

Cons: The reponses are completely fluff. They instruct people to call 408-733-8400 for a "support manager".

[1] The 408-733-8400 number sends you to the same messaging service as the toll-free 800-459-1816 number.
[2] Once you call OCZ Technology, what option are you supposed to choose to contact a "support manager"? I assumed response implied the technical support group.
[3] No one I spoke to in technical support had any clue what "support manager" referred to - even after I read the reponse right from Newegg's review threads.

Other Thoughts: The reponses are designed to give the impression that OCZ Technology provides good support to customers experiencing problems. Judge for yourself.

The only thing that this phone call confirmed is that OCZ Technology would replace my defective Vertex 2 units (which have 34 nm NAND) with ones containing 25 nm NAND. The 25 nm NAND versions are slower in performance, have lower write cycle lifetimes, and format to slightly smaller capacities.

Guess now it is time to call NewEgg directly and request my money back.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, we aplogize for the problems you have had with our phone system, and any misunderstandings. When dialing our 408-733-8400 number, you will first be greeted with the option to enter an extension. Simply enter "206" and you will be sent to the support manager's desk. He will be happy to assist you. Thank you

1 out of 5 eggsVery unreliable product

Pros: Very fast... Measured 7.8 out of 7.9 on windows performance index

I got 2 of these drives for christmas 4 months ago. One for my laptop, one for my desktop. One of the drives was dead on arrival, but i figure i was a fluke. The drive would worked for a day, then wouldn't even show up in bios. I mailed it back in to newegg for a replacement (which they were terrific about). I popped in the new drive and it has run fine ever since. However the other drive (desktop) same thing. Right now it does not even show up in the bios. I guess at this point I will get to see how good OCZ's return policy is.

Other Thoughts: They can make a good drive, but in my experience... 2 drives, 2 failures in less than 4 months.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, we are very sorry for the problem. These products are developing quickly, and new firmware has brought improvements. Please visit the link below and create a support ticket to get in touch with our staff. We will be happy to assist you with a replacement drive. Thank you

1 out of 5 eggsPiece of Garbage

Pros: Absolutely nothing.

Cons: Very expensive piece of garbage. I installed this 120GB model in my PC, and it did not work at all. Even my BIOS did not recognize it.
It was DOA. Apparently this is quite common with OCZ products. Just read most of other user's comments. It is very sad and very troublesome.
Buyer be aware. I sincerely don't recommend for anyone to buy from this horrible company, OCZ.
Avoid headaches, buy a different brand.

Other Thoughts: It is impossible to reach any person at OCZ's tech support. When you call OCZ at (800) 459-1816 you get a recording saying that you must submit trouble tickets only online. It took them 3 days to reply to me by email.
When it took them so long to write me, I had already RMA'd my garbage SSD back to good old Newegg.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, we are very sorry for the problem. We are happy that Newegg was able to assist you. If we can be of any assistance, please visit our support forums at the link below and post in the Flash/SSD section.
Thank you
