Based on a cutting-edge new architecture, Vertex 2 Solid State Drives deliver unprecedented performance while maintaining an affordable storage solution for early adopters looking to update their systems with the latest technology. OCZ designed the Vertex 2 to excel in both sequential and random read/write rates to take your PC or notebook productivity to the next level, featuring superb 4KB random writes up to 50,000 IOPS to give a performance edge over the previous generation. Using the latest controller technology, Vertex 2 not only provides a faster, more responsive PC experience, but promotes cooler, quieter, and more energy efficient conditions compared to traditional mechanical hard drives. Built with SATA 3Gb/s, the Vertex 2 Series easily integrates into today’s mobile and desktop platforms and features TRIM support to optimize performance over the drive’s lifespan as the ultimate Windows7 notebook or desktop upgrade.

  • newegg SSD Storage Technology Unlike traditional hard disk drives, SSDs have no moving parts, resulting in a quiet, cool, highly reliable storage solution that also offers faster application loading and system responsiveness. And for laptops and netbooks, the lower power needs of SSD’s translate to extended battery life. Higher performance with more durability means you can be truly mobile with confidence.
  • newegg Better Performance Built with MLC NAND flash and the latest generation SandForce SF1200 controller featuring award winning DuraClass Technology, the OCZ Vertex 2 120GB SSD delivers industry-leading SSD reliability, performance, and power efficiency, with maximum read speed up to 285 MB/s and maximum write speed up to 275 MB/s, plus incredible random 4K write performance of 50,000 IOPS.
  • newegg TRIM Support The OCZ Vertex 2 Series SSD’s offer native TRIM support than can be enabled in Windows 7. Designed to maintain the performance of SSD at an optimal level over the lifetime of the drive, TRIM functions by actively deleting invalid data from the SSD’s memory cells to ensure that write operations perform at full speed. Since a memory block must be erased before it can be re-programmed, TRIM improves performance by pro-actively erasing pages containing invalid data, allowing the SSD to write new data without first having to perform a time-consuming erase command.

1 out of 5 eggsreceived DOA

Pros: it was fast till it died on install, thank newegg for letting me return it, that's gotta be a Pro

Cons: went "ka-put" on me after finishing clean install of Win7 and misc programs that I use on my laptop, all installed from USB key and network drives. It rebooted and was never found again by the bios, plugged into external USB SATA HD adapter and can be seen but not accessed, so drive was pronounced dead about 6 hrs after i started (i took my time :)) .

Other Thoughts: have the Vertex LE, Turbo, Vertex... this is first drive that died on me, doesn't change opinion on the drive family, its a good product. This goes with cutting edge tech, stuff will die on you out of the blue.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, we are sorry for the problem. We are happy that all of your other OCZ drives are working well for you, and we are sure that your replacement will serve you well.
Thank you

1 out of 5 eggsPoor RMA customer service

Pros: Fast drive, recognized just like any HDD.

Cons: My 1 egg rating is for the poor service I received while RMA-ing the product after it died.
It died just past the 30 day newegg return period, so I had to get it replaced by OCZ.
This seemed fine at first, until I found that I had to pay myself for the return postage to California - I'd had this $200+ product for 1 month, and I'm paying to return their dead product to them? How exactly does that work?

As far as I'm concerned, I just paid an extra $10 for this product, through no fault of my own.
It's their fault the product had a fault, they should be paying the shipping BOTH ways.

Other Thoughts: Any product can have a defect, die, under-perform - but it's the customer service you receive from the manufacturer that sets different brands apart.

They should have an account with UPS or fedex - OR send out the replacement with a UPS label to return the bad one - like so many other companies do.

It may have only been $10 for me to return it, but I shouldn't be paying a penny for their mistake.

Lets hope the new one they sent me stays alive longer. I'm now imaging incrementally, daily, to be safe - which probably negates the performance increase from a product like this.

1 out of 5 eggs60 days? Really? Iron Egg Rusty

Pros: Pretty fast - both in speed, and failing. (Though not fast enough it seems.)

Cons: Dead.

Other Thoughts: This is day 60 of UPS confirmed delivery, fine yesterday, dead today. I slipped it into another another laptop to be sure - yup, its dead. I called newegg to take advantage of their iron egg guarantee - no dice, its 60 days from when you ordered it, not from when it arrived, and "the system" won't allow any exceptions. Hopefully OCZ comes through. I've read good things about newegg's customer service in the past, this is my first experience - way to go, newegg! :(

1 out of 5 eggsHow hard could it be...

Pros: Superfast shipping. Plus 10 brownie points, Newegg.

Cons: 3.5" bracket not compatible with Mac Pro. Minus 20 brownie points, Newegg, for failing to mention this.

Other Thoughts: How freaking hard could it be for OCZ to drill just two more holes in the mounting bracket to make it compatible with a Mac Pro? C'mon guys, get a clue!
If this is indicative of OCZ's attention to detail, I don't have much confidence in their quality control.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, we are sorry for the Mac Pro bracket issue, and we regret the inconvenience. This would not reflect a quality control issue, as a design change would resolve this. We will take note of this for the future. Thank you

1 out of 5 eggsDead after 4 weeks

Pros: Fast boot. Very fast.

Cons: Drive died fast. Very fast.

Used in HP 8440p laptop with XP Pro, drive worked beautifully for the first 3 weeks. Then data started to go missing. New documents in MyDocs would be gone after reboot. Even Outlook files disappeared after extended sleep mode (travel) or reboot.

After a week of mysteriously missing files, drive just died. No power, no data, not visible in BIOS, not visible in drive dock. Just dead.

Other Thoughts: Seems that these drives go on sale when trouble tickets start building up. I could be wrong, but it seems to coincide time-wise.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, we are apologize for the problem. Please visit the link below and create a support ticket to get in touch with our staff. We will be happy to assist you with arrangements for a replacement drive. Thank you

1 out of 5 eggsDoesn't live up to specs - no where close!

Pros: Assuming I ultimately get my $30 rebate, I got a decent price of $170 for this.

For overall system performance it provides a big benefit versus a HDD. Windows 7 boot time is significantly improved versus HDD. Excluding the 30 seconds for my BIOS and RAID array loading time my OS boot and media center load time has halved vs HDD time.

My Windows 7 & auto load of Media Center takes 55 seconds versus 85 seconds previously on HDD. Notably, the BIOS and RAID array takes 30 of this.

Cons: It fails to live up to specs by a wide margin.

As measured by CDM, I get 211MB/s sequential read, and only 85MB/s sequential write. I have several Intel SSD's, and although the specs on the Intel SSDs are lower than this OCZ drive, the actual performance is faster.

Generally I've found the Intel SSD's to slightly exceed their specs, this drive on the other hand isn't anywhere close, not even half.

I've had the drive six weeks now, and suffered one major failure requiring a complete OS rebuild. I don't know for sure if it was the OCZ drive at fault, but I'm highly suspicious of it being the cause. As a comparison, I've never had any OS corruption or failures on the Intel SSDs.

Final point: for copying large media files, given the 85MB/s write speed it's actually quicker for me to copy media files to the HDD in the same system, which can write at 144MB/s - over my GbE network I can copy at 105MB/s to the HDD (limited by the network) I'm limited to 85MB/s on the OCZ SSD.

Other Thoughts: Ignore the specs, they are disappointingly different from actual results. Concerned about reliability.

1 out of 5 eggsOCZ sucks

Pros: Fast, not expensive as intel

Cons: Among over 20 hard drives I used, OCZ ssd's quality is THE WORST

Other Thoughts: This SSD died after only two month of light use (only word, powerpoint, internet surfing and picture viewing) and this is the only hard drive that died in my hand. As someone noted, OCZ is putting out their low quality products for higher profit. I will NEVER consider OCZ again.

1 out of 5 eggsWhy are OCZ SSD drives FAILING so QUICKLY ??

Pros: Sorry, but I can't think of a single PRO.

Read my review for the OCZ 240gb -- Doogie1MD

Cons: I bought 2 of these SSD's from the egg.. a 120, and a 240gb.

Between the two, they have failed a total of 6 times in 5 weeks with different failure problems.. BOTH ending up as paperweights.. completely unrecognizable by the BIOS.

(Read my review for the 240 under Doogie1MD)

The 240 was RMA'd and the replacement has died as well. This 120 crashed 3 times and is now dead after the 4th OS install.

$6000.00 laptop. And yes, I DO know what I'm doing. I've built dozens of computers, and installed Windoze HUNDREDS of times over the last 30 years, and NEVER had such a failure rate with my hard drives... EVER!

Other Thoughts: My time and data is FAR too valuable to waste on unreliable storage media.

I will never buy another OCZ SSD ever again.

I know the egg's "Product review Guidelines" prohibit comparing competing brands, but I am not comparing when I state my failure rate with these drives, and my complete satisfaction with my Intel X25-M SSD I purchased from NewEgg. I have had ABSOLUTELY NO problems what so ever with my Intel SSD, and now own two dead SSD's from OCZ.

1 out of 5 eggsVertex2E bait and switch

Pros: its an ssd.

Cons: I did enough research to get 2 of the best ssd's in raid 0. I bought the ssd's that Tomshardware.com ranked very high and OCZ switched the technology to a weaker more cost effecient manufacturing process (thus, more money in their pockets at my expense without me knowing!) without changing the name. E series used to be ranked high and I wound up with a lower end product! Dont offer your apology and help to remedy the situation "OCZ jokesupport." My OS is on these 2 drives and I am done modding this pc and switching out parts. Instead, just eat your bad review and take it like a company that isn't trusted by me!

Other Thoughts: under this review should be an OCZ represenitive trying to clear their name and look like they take care of their customers in order to impress you so that you dont think they are a lousy company!

Manufacturer Response:

Hello,we really do care about our customers, and we really want to help, so I am posting here. Please contact our support manager at (408) 733-8400, ext 206 and will be happy to address your concerns and make things right for you, seriously. Thank you

1 out of 5 eggsDead in 60 days, RMA slow as H**L, Better go with Intel

Pros: SSD Technology

Cons: Reliability - died in less than 60 days
Technical support - unresponsive - over a week after filing RMA request - no answer

Other Thoughts: Purchased this at the end of Jan and put together a HTPC somewhere in mid Feb: the drive was dead at the end of March. Failure happened outside of the 30 days New Egg replacement period so now I have to go through OCZ.
I filed a new ticket on Friday, Apr 1, did not get an answer until Tuesday, Apr 5, and that answer was simple "acknowledgement" and nothing since then - a whole week and nothing. All they they did was acknowledged that the ticket was received - C'MON, REFUND MY FRIGGING MONEY SO I CAN BY A DECENT DRIVE FROM INTEL

I will never by another OCZ prodcut - SSD failed, memory from my previous purchase defective - I'll stick with Intel.

I"ve been in IT industry since 1990 (MCP, MCSE, MCSA, CCNA), run my own IT firm for 8 years - I know what I'm doing - I will not recommend or experiment with OCZ, I'll stick with Intel. Intel cost what, $20-40 more but you got reliability and excellent customer service.

I just cant wait to get my money back from OCZ
