OCZ Vertex 3 Solid State Drives unleash the performance potential of the SATA 6Gbps interface, leading the speed revolution in this next-generation solution. As the first SSD to feature the latest SandForce controller design, OCZ designed the Vertex 3 to push the limits in both sequential and random read/write rates to blaze past the competition when every MB/s matters. With incredible 4k file writes up to 60,000 IOPS, these latest drives take productivity, gaming, and multimedia applications to the next level to work in perfect symmetry with the latest enthusiast platforms.

Built with the quality, reliability, and durability that lives up to the OCZ name, the Vertex 3 Series easily integrates into today’s mobile and desktop platforms and features TRIM support to optimize performance over the drive’s lifespan as the ultimate Windows 7 companion.

  • newegg Industry-Leading Performance & Endurance Driven by the second generation of SandForce SSD controller (SF-2281), the Vertex 3 Series is designed and built to unleash the full potential of the 6Gbps SATA III interface. The Vertex 3 pushes the limits in both sequential and random data transfer rates, significantly improving your productivity, gaming, multimedia, and overall computing experience. In addition, the SSD controller’s integrated enhanced DuraClass Technology is architected to leverage today’s densest MLC NAND Flash memory, delivering best-in-class performance, endurance, security, and power efficiency in a “DRAM-less”, single chip solution.
  • newegg A Superior PC Experience In addition to maximum performance, a Vertex3 upgrade promotes cooler, quieter, and more energy efficient conditions compared to traditional mechanical hard drives. With no moving parts, SSDs provide peace of mind with their superior durability and reliability. Vertex 3 SSDs work in perfect harmony with next generation platforms and operating systems to deliver the ultimate storage solution.
  • newegg TRIM Support The Vertex 3 Series SSDs offer native TRIM support featured in Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. Designed to maintain the performance of SSD at an optimal level over the lifetime of the drive, TRIM functions by actively deleting invalid data from the SSD’s memory cells to ensure that write operations perform at full speed. Since a memory block must be erased before it can be re-programmed, TRIM improves performance by pro-actively erasing pages containing invalid data, allowing the SSD to write new data without first having to perform a time-consuming erase command.
  • newegg 2.5" to 3.5" Adapter Included The Vertex 3 Series features a standard 2.5-inch form factor for compatibility with notebooks and select desktops. A 2.5-inch to 3.5-inch mounting bracket is included with the SSD for compatibility with standard hard drive mounting.

1 out of 5 eggsBuyer BEWARE

Pros: The price seemed good...but not when compared to the dependability. The drive was moderately fast, but you would expect that from an SSD.

Cons: The drive failed within a year. No warning, no issues, no indication anything was wrong...and all our data was gone.
It failed in the middle of an acronis backup which overwrote previous backups and left the one it was in the middle of unusable. They will replace it..with a REFURBISHED drive.

Other Thoughts: NOTE!!!! The warranty on this drive will be honored with an old firmware version refurbished drive. The one we received could not be formatted and would not install windows. Tech support wants YOU to upgrade the firmware and jump through hoops, oh and by the way YOU have to pay for shipping too.

1 out of 5 eggsBad sectors after first year

Pros: Disk is ordinary and same as other, fast, small, light.

Cons: Used this SSD for OS and ran into OS performance issue. Checked the disk and it has 8 bad sectors. Not worth my investment. NEED LONGER LIFE than 1-2 yrs.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Truong515,

Depending on what utility you used to determine the drive status you may be receiving incorrect information. You need to download and run the OCZ Toolbox to verify any potential issues using the SMART details provided. A small number of reallocation events/retired blocks is not unusual and will not affect the performance of the drive. Our Forum Staff are happy to investigate any issue you are experiencing as well as provide analysis of drive condition using proper tools. Please contact us and we will gladly assist however possible.

I have attached a link to the OCZ Toolbox for your convenience.

Thank you for reaching out to us through the Newegg review system.

Kind Regards,

OCZ Support

1 out of 5 eggsComplete failure after 14 months

Pros: It was on sale. It didn't catch on fire.

Cons: Failed suddenly and completely (even ddrescue can't extract anything from it) after just fourteen months. Strangely, never performed noticably better than the spinning disk it replaced, either.

Other Thoughts: I took a chance on OCZ. Never again.

1 out of 5 eggsNot worth it

Pros: Fast when it works

Cons: Blue screens constantly even after several firmware updates. This is a limitation apparently with using the drive as the OS drive.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Consumer,

We are happy to help you with this in our Support Forum. Please take a moment to contact us directly and we can provide you with clear, easy to follow steps for proper installation of the Vertex 3 or methods to resolve your blue screens if related to the SSD. If you continue to have problems we can arrange for a warranty resolution.

We are very sorry for the inconvenience!

1 out of 5 eggsFailed after about 6 months

Pros: Was fast and worked fine...for 6 months.

Cons: Then it failed. I just spent half a day installing a new drive. Don't know if I am going to try and get it replaced or whatever the warranty allows because I am hesitant to give a hard drive to anyone.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Anonymous,

OCZ will definitely stand behind the product in accordance with the terms of the Limited Warranty. It sounds like you may have security concerns regarding data that may remain on the drive. You do not need to worry. OCZ will take extra steps to protect the security of the data. OCZ performs best practice media sanitation as early as possible to purge any data that still resides on returned drives. Please use the link below to contact us so we can arrange for a prompt warranty resolution.

We are very sorry for the inconvenience!

OCZ Support

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Small, Fast easy to configure

Cons: Dead after 8 months

Other Thoughts: This HD was being used in a media center that stayed on 24/7 with plenty of fans and temperatures where always low. System had operating system and programs on it only and died after eight months.

1 out of 5 eggsJust awful SSD

Pros: Its a solid state drive and functions as such.

Cons: However, The price for what you get is extremely high. I would say this SSD is worth somewhere in the range of $50 to $80 dollars. This SSD is on the very low end of SSD IMO. WEI gives it only a 7.1 and on a clean build with a clean install starts the PC in just under 40 seconds. Ive tried using this drive on three different builds and have been sorely disappointed at its performance. I bought a Kingston Hyper X drive and installed on same PC and the PC boots in under 15 seconds.

Other Thoughts: If this SSD was priced in $50 - $80 range it would have gotten 3 stars

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Davemiami,

We are sorry you feel the price of the Vertex 3 was out of your budget! It is a good performing drive on a capable SATA3 system, but on a SATA2 system it will be limited to SATA2 speeds. This is consistent with the 7.1 score you found in WEI. As this purchase was not through Newegg, I cannot offer assistance through the review portal but can suggest you visit our Support Forum for setup assistance if you feel the drive is under performing on your system.

Thank you for your purchase!

Sincerely,
OCZ Support

1 out of 5 eggsLess than a year old - drive died.

Pros: Fast start up time, I loved the performance.

Cons: Drive died less than a year later. Computer would not recognize it. I have to RMA it back to OCZ. We'll see how that goes.
Be sure to back up your files ALL THE TIME when using this drive.

Other Thoughts: Backup your data frequently when using this drive. Check OCZ website for updated bios. I admit, I can't remember if I did that with this drive. I have another OCZ drive - I hope it lasts longer.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear dph-pdx,

If you experience any issues with the RMA process or replacement drive please contact our Support Forum. We will gladly assist however possible.

Thank you for your patience and we apologize for the failure!

Sincerely,
OCZ Support

1 out of 5 eggsnoisy SSD drive

Pros: It is a solid state with a warranty.

Cons: Will never buy a drive from OCZ again. There is a high pitch noise that never stops when using this drive. Had the same problem with a OCZ Vertex VtX 4 250gb drive as well.

Other Thoughts: Currently being used in a Dell e6420.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Anonymous,

The high-pitched noise you hear is not likely caused by the SSD (either model you tried). The noise generally relates to different power states the system is in. You can eliminate that noise by turning off C1E or Speedstep if possible - also adjusting your power scheme to a plan based on high performance. If you would like us to troubleshoot this with you please contact our Support Forum and we will gladly offer information and assistance.

Kind Regards,
OCZ Support

Pros: none

Cons: randomly drops and forces me to rescan in device manager. have other drives and have no issues like this. i knew when i bought this it was a risk given all the other reports of problems and i was not disappointed by the other reviewers comments.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Lance,

We can definitely help you with this. Please visit our Support Forum and we will help you with both a firmware update and offer setup/config assistance. If we cannot quickly get the drive working properly we will arrange for a replacement per warranty terms.
