3 out of 5 eggsMeh.

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler SE9 16GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive Model DTSE9H/16GBZ

Pros: Solid construction, okay price.

Cons: Fairly short lifetime (one of the three started began to fail after a few weeks of fairly light but continuous use).

Speed is pretty unimpressive.

USB 2.0 not 3.0. 3.0 drives are getting to be much more competitive in terms of cost—unless you know that you'll only ever be using these with 2.0 ports it's probably better to just pay a little bit more and get some 3.0 drives.

Other Thoughts: I was using one of these as the boot partition for a Linux computer for a while (it's a long story, but the short version is I ran out of SATA ports); all the data (including /home and /var) was on other disks, so usage was really quite light. Installing and updating packages was *incredibly* slow, and that's not a throughput-heavy use case so I would expect the speed of flash memory to more than make up for the (lack of) speed of USB 2.0. After about a month I started seeing errors.

I was expecting these to be much more reliable. Given my experience, I don't see a reason not to go with something a bit less expensive in the future.

Pros: Got for free in a bundle so price was great
Great to hook on a key chain.

Cons: None really. It's a USB device. Not a lot that can go wrong.

5 out of 5 eggsCheap Robust Flash Drives

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler SE9 16GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive Model DTSE9H/16GBZ

Pros: Hadn't seen anything cheaper in price per gig than these when they popped up on sale. Really like the metal case for use in an industrial setting.

Cons: cover for open end would be nice for when not in use, however I would say not necessary when carried in an office environment, or less than an industrial field application.

5 out of 5 eggsTough & durable for low cost

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler SE9 16GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive Model DTSE9H/16GBZ

Pros: The design of the drive is fantastic. I have it on my keyring and it is my lifeline. Extremely durable and will not fall off of your keychain.

Other people have talked about slow speeds, but it works just fine for my use. I use it for spreadsheets, pictures, and artwork files. I have it about 1/2 full and I have no performance issues.

Cons: None

2 out of 5 eggsNot using these drives

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler SE9 16GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive Model DTSE9H/16GBZ

Pros: small compact drives.

Cons: when I try to use flash drive and touch the USB port at times my computer shuts down.

Other Thoughts: Do not care for style and physical size. Not happy with these flash drives.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Paul,
We apologize for the odd behavior that's occurring with the DTSE9H flash drive. The drive should work like any other standard USB 2.0 drive when plugged into a computer. The system should detect it is there, install the device drive, then show up as a removeable disk. As this is not the case, we can replace the drive under it's five year warranty. Please call us at 1-800-435-0640 (USA and Canada only) M - F 6am - 6pm PT and an available technician will assist in resolving this for you.

Thank you for using Kingston flash drives,
-Jewel, Kingston US Technical Support

2 out of 5 eggsHow slow can you go?

This review is from: Kingston DataTraveler SE9 16GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive Model DTSE9H/16GBZ

Pros: I really like the form factor on these; they are really strong and as a solid piece, they hold up well to abuse. I got one for my wife a year ago, and she still has not managed to destroy it (other drives came back in pieces). When they went on sale, I picked up 6 more for my office as we use them frequently and I figured they would work well.

Cons: This drive is abysmally slow. I zeroize the drives with dd on a Linux machine, and typically, I get around 20-27 MB/s write speed on USB2 plugs. These drives write zeros at 4 MB/s. I have heard about Kingston and slow memory, but 4 MB/s? I can almost wipe two of my 64 GB Patriot Flash drives in the time it takes to wipe one of these 16 GB drives.
