3 out of 5 eggsGood on Win 7, having problem with Win 8.1

This review is from: UNITEK USB-Powered (1000Mbps) USB 3.0 3-port Hub with RJ45 Gigabit Ethernet LAN Wired Network Adapter

Pros: Good design and network speed. It is a perfect accessory for my MacBook Pro Retina which has only 2 USB ports and no Ethernet. File copy from my Ubuntu NAS could reach 880Mbps - 900Mbps, very close to my other PC with Gigabit Ethernet.

Cons: It worked perfectly when I was using Win 7 with it. However after I upgraded to Win 8.1, the Ethernet began to play tricks. Unplug the USB HUB then plug it back, very likely the Ethernet would never show up. In the beginning I unplug and plug back a few times just to get the Ethernet. Then I just found out that it can be worked around by going to the "Device Manager", in "Universal Serial Bus controllers" group, disable then re-enable "Generic SuperSpeed USB Hub". After that the Ethernet will show up. The USB HUB's device ID is VID_2109&PID_0812 and it uses the generic USB3 driver shipped with Win 8.1. This may be the compatibility issue btw the hardware and the driver.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Gigabit Adapter for Tablets

This review is from: UNITEK USB-Powered (1000Mbps) USB 3.0 3-port Hub with RJ45 Gigabit Ethernet LAN Wired Network Adapter

Pros: Gigabit speed network connection for my Dell Venue 11 Pro tablet. Network connection is reliable and works without problems. The added USB ports are also a bonus.

Cons: As with many products the latest driver were not included. The current drivers were found here:
http://www.unitek-products.com/en/product_detail.php?id=253

Other Thoughts: I know manufacturing & shipping constraints prevent putting the current driver in the box. Please just simply provide a web link to the current driver so I do not have to hunt it down. Once I found the web site the product was not under "USB Converter" with other USB Ethernet products is was under "USB Hub"

5 out of 5 eggsGreat speeds! Had issues with Yoga 2 Pro

This review is from: UNITEK USB-Powered (1000Mbps) USB 3.0 3-port Hub with RJ45 Gigabit Ethernet LAN Wired Network Adapter

Pros: Love transferring files at 100MBps over my home network!

Cons: Had issues with my Yoga 2 Pro. Using the latest 1/24/14 drivers, the network would shut down anytime I tried to transfer a file. Using 11/2013 drivers allowed me to have a steady connection but it was VERY slow. Less than 1MBs per second speeds. I was able to fix all these issues by connecting a 3.0 extension cable first then the dongle. I'm not taking any eggs off because I think it's an issue with the Yoga. I tried the unit with an ACER S3 and it worked great out the box.

Other Thoughts: Get a usb 3.0 extension cable if you are having problems with your yoga 2 pro.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks as expected

This review is from: UNITEK USB-Powered (1000Mbps) USB 3.0 3-port Hub with RJ45 Gigabit Ethernet LAN Wired Network Adapter

Pros: This device performs exactly as it claims, plugged into my Windows 8 ultra book and it was detected and worked right away.
Excellent accessory for an ultrabook
Combines two devices into one so my laptop bag isn't as cluttered
Feels well constructed
Would also work well as a "docking station" for a laptop or ultrabook

Cons: Cable too long; This isn't necessarily a con for everyone, but since I'm using this with my ultrabook I just wanted a small adapter/dongle to give me an Ethernet port and more USB ports. The cable is nearly a foot long. If you're using this with a desktop or using this as a docking station that could be desirable but in my case I would have been very content with a 3" or 4" cable.

Other Thoughts: Great value to snag a few extra USB 3.0 ports and a gigabit Ethernet port.

I haven't had a chance to try it on Linux and see if the proper drivers exist for it there.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Device - Don't lose the disc...

This review is from: UNITEK USB-Powered (1000Mbps) USB 3.0 3-port Hub with RJ45 Gigabit Ethernet LAN Wired Network Adapter

Pros: Convenient device
Hub & NIC work as advertised
Plug & Play for Windows 8.x

Cons: No external power option
Manufacturer's website doesn't work if you lose the driver disc and you're running Windows7

Other Thoughts: I've been using the unit with a Lenovo Helix which has two USB 3.0 ports built into the keyboard dock. There are times that you need a wired NIC and many more times when you need a good USB 3.0 hub. The combo device was good thinking.

Unfortunately UNITEK choose not to give the option for an external power block. USB 3.0 does push more power over a single port than 2.0 which helps but isn't a fix all. I find myself in a lot of situations due to my job where the extra power is needed... and yes I do agree that I can easily just carry another hub that has that option but this is a personal review of the product so I'm saying my piece :)

Last thing on the driver situation... the NIC port is based on ASIX AX88179 and the latest drivers can be downloaded from ASIX at: http://www.asix.com.tw/download.php?sub=driverdetail&PItemID=131

Bottom line... it is a good device that gets a lot of use from me and wasn't expensive in the least. If UNITEK's website worked (http://www.unitek-products.com), and if I were able to download the driver package to replace the lost CD, then I'd give the product 5-starts... but since it doesn't, and I find something oddly disconcerting about a technology company whose website doesn't work, I'm grading it four stars.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Ethernet

This review is from: UNITEK USB-Powered (1000Mbps) USB 3.0 3-port Hub with RJ45 Gigabit Ethernet LAN Wired Network Adapter

Pros: Fast Ethernet

Cons: Large

Other Thoughts: Bought this for my Dell XPS 15 Touch which didn't have Ethernet. Works great. Copying 84GBs of files from my home fileserver at 30+ MB/s vs 6MB/s over AC-1200 WiFi. Haven't used the USB ports.

No extra drivers needed with the Windows 8.1 that came on my Dell.
