  • newegg Secure Data might seem insecure being open in a network, but the QNAP TS-879 Pro offers a variety of security options such as encrypted access, IP filtering, policy-based automatic IP blocking, and more. In addition, full control of the NAS is offered down to the user and folder access rights to determine who can access the NAS and what can or cannot be accessed. The TS-879 Pro is packed with security features to stop all unauthorized data access such as AES-256 volume-based encryption. The AES-256 volume-based encryption prevents sensitive data from unauthorized access and data-breach even if the hard drives or the device is stolen.
  • newegg Reliable The TS-879 Pro is reliable with built-in safety precautions to safeguard all data from any unforeseen problems. With multiple built-in features to guarantee no interruptions to the work flow of a business, the TS-879 Pro is an efficient asset. The advanced RAID configurations and hot-swap capabilities are included to give RAID performance, protection and reduced rebuilding time. Moreover, the dual OS embedded on the DOM architecture ensures the system will boot up. If one of the two operating systems fails, the healthy operating system will boot up and operate normally while repairing the failed operating system. The dual Gigabit LAN ports can also be configured for failover which allows the NAS server to sustain the failure of one network port and still provide continuous services.
  • newegg Simple Setting up local or remote access with the TS-879 Pro is painless and does not require any IT skills. All setup processes have been simplified so that most of the process is either automatic or can be completed by an installation wizard. The user-friendly web GUI allows administrators to easily manage the NAS so there is no need for an extensive knowledge of complex commands. Simple management tools such as instant SMS/Email alert, the hard drive S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology) feature, and system resource monitor are provided to keep administrators up-to-date on their NAS at all times.
  • newegg High Performance The TS-879 Pro features Intel Core i3 Processor, 2GB DDR3 memory, 10 Gigabit network capability, and 6Gb/s SATA. Even the most demanding requirements in data center or corporate networks can be satisfied by the TS-879 Pro. With outstanding data transfer rate of over 1,000 MB/s data throughput and 100,000 IOPS, intensive business applications and concurrent tasks can be easily fulfilled.
  • newegg NAS + iSCSI/IP-SAN Solution for Server Virtualization With increasing virtualization of IT resources, the need for high performance storage is more essential than ever. The TS-879 Pro offers class-leading system architecture matched with 10 GbE networking performance designed to meet the needs of demanding server virtualization, such as VMware, Citrix, and Windows Hyper-V. 10 GbE network speeds greatly increase the agility of data transmission in a virtualized environment intensifying NFS and iSCSI connection performance.
  • newegg Blazing Fast Data Backup via USB 3.0 The TS-879 Pro features USB 3.0 ports for high speed backup to external hard drives. EXT3, EXT4, NTFS, and HFS+ file systems are supported to ensure compatibility with Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux operating systems.

3 out of 5 eggsHalf-n-Half

Pros: Quality workmanship and appearance. If the software has what you need, it is quite flashy and easy to use. Wiki, Forum and How-To guides available. You can build QPKGs to add-in features not in the base software. Unit comes with both the Emulex and Intel mounting brackets. Screws and cables provided. Relatively small size and low power usage. Two large quiet fans pull a good volume of air for cooling. USB 3.0 ports and SATA 6Gbit hot-swap drive bays. Excellent shipping container. Unit does have a standard VGA and HDMI video console output.

Cons: Under the covers the software leaves quite a bit to be desired--no ZFS and the RAID configuration appears rather cluegy. The hardware appears to be a genuine UEFI based PC, but it is only about 90% so. It's certainly not a standard ATX board. Many software packages refuse to install on it without quite a bit of work. Tall 3.5" drives completely fill the drive trays and probably receive little if any cooling air. If you do not use exactly the correct Intel or Emulex 10GbE NICs, the QNAP software will not recognize them. The onboard custom 512M Flash is a bit small for any after market OS. Only two memory slots so memory upgrades are limited. CPU uses a passive heatsink and seems to run right about 60C which seems too hot to count on it being stable. Also, don't lose the drive screws. This unit is pretty expensive when you consider you could purchase a 9 bay case, standard motherboard, chip, memory and PSU for much less right here from NewEgg, so consider your options.

Other Thoughts: QNAP forum--don't be surprised if you get flamed for cross posting. The elite on there are far more concerned with etiquette than helping you solve your problem. If you decide to open your unit up, be sure to pull the custom drive board out before removing the mainboard or you will damage something most assuredly. I up'd the DDR3 1333 memory to 4G, removed the custom USB FLash drive, added an Intel 10GbE card and installed (from a different machine) FreeNAS on a normal USB Flash drive. I now have a pretty decent little IP-SAN storage device though I could use more memory and a ZFS SSD cache drive to soup things up a little more. And yes, I said good-bye to any warranty I may have had. First things first, it has to work. My other option was to send it back untouched which wasn't realistically an option due to time constraints. Hopefully this review sheds some light on what you may want to do PRIOR to purchase instead of after you receive it like I did.

5 out of 5 eggsBox of awesome

Pros: Easy to set up and full of functionality. This SAN/NAS has been very reliable. This box is extremely high performance, especially when you put a 10 gigabit adapter in it. The box is VMware certified and plays well with ESX5.

Cons: I wish it was about 10% cheaper. Also, DO NOT try and use it for the surveillance station option. That functionality is worthless.

Other Thoughts: I complain about the price because its relevant to me, however if you fill the box full of enterprise drives and a 10 gigabit interface, it will keep up with SAN systems costing millions of dollars.
