2 out of 5 eggsDied after 18 months

Pros: Did well while it worked. Over the last few months, seemingly random unmounts occurred.

This was mounted in a Rosewill R2-JBOD external enclosure, hooked up to a Mac via USB. It was used for media storage, and ran 24/7 with auto power-off enabled in the OS.

Cons: Lasted only 18 months. I usually expect 36 months' life out of hard drives that are constantly on.

4 out of 5 eggsRoll The Dice?

Pros: Very solid, robust drive; we've not had one fail that tested good!
(You do test your drives when you purchase them, right?)
5-year manufacturer warranty!
1 trillion bytes of storage!

Cons: We've had an alarmingly high failure rate out-of-the-box; 33% over the last 6 months.
We've had a high repeat-failure-rate on replacement drives; 2 replacement drives were also faulty and had to be replaced again!

Other Thoughts: 1x10^12'th bytes (TB) is not 1x2^40'th bytes (TiB)
1 TB ~ 0.9099 TiB - learn and understand the difference! Both systems are correct, as confusing as that may seem.

Newegg is usually pretty good with returns, but we just got burned for the first time. Since there is no 'Advanced RMA' process, we order the replacement item, and under an RMA, ship the faulty item back for refund. Works like a charm, even though it takes a little while for all of the numbers to catch up properly.

Shipped 2 of these drives back in the same box, but 1 was rejected for 'customer damage'. The drive was returned to me with a big dent in the top cover that definitely wasn't there when I returned it.

Western Digital is being very helpful with trying to get this resolved.

The problem is that we now have and were charged for 1 drive more than we were approved for, and I have to explain to our accounting department why there is a discrepancy.

1 out of 5 eggsFailure After Two Years

Pros: It did it's job, when it was working! To be honest, I can't say there were any real pros with this.

Cons: These drives should of been labeled as FAIL not FAEX. Overall after about a year and a half of using the drive, It was loud, noticed down spins then silence, a lot of times blue screens.

I should of took that as the drive telling me something. On my part I couldn't figure out what hardware was failing until I did a diagnostic test on my hard drives one by one, which I previously took out any other remaining hardware before doing so. My theory was right. Before I was able to back up everything off this drive, it finally choked.

Lost some things on the drive, thankfully I was able to get most of my important work off of it using an external case and a program called ZAR. Which only left me with about 1 - 2GB of missing or corrupted files. Gladly those files weren't important to me.

Other Thoughts: Am skeptical about Western Digital now. As this was the only manufacturer I bought from since 2003. I remember when hard drives were flawless back in the day. Now hard drives are made with cheap hardware and put together poorly. I have to give Western Digital 1 egg for this one, as I had to go through a lot of shoots and ladders just to at least get my data back. Not to mention cluttering up all my other drives to save the data to.

Still haven't replaced the drive yet and it's been about a year already, which I still have until 2015. I'm hoping if they were smart, the drive they replace this with won't be the same model and as terrible as the previous.

All of my hard drives are Western Digital as of right now. If you value your data, I would be very cautious as to the next hard drive you buy from this company.

3 out of 5 eggs1 of 2 DOA but Quiet

Pros: Drive seems pretty quiet

Cons: One of the two drives I ordered was DOA. Newegg took good care of me, but it's still a pain to have to troubleshoot what the problem is on a brand new build... MOBO issue or Hard Drive, had to remove drive and try it in another computer.

Other Thoughts: Newegg has quick Customer Service and they were very responsive, and were quick and easy to talk to.

Now that I think of it, the whole reason for this build is essentially the failure of WD drives from my old computer. In perhaps a 7 year time frame I have lost 2 out of the 4 drives in that machine, and I was getting a master drive failure issue on another. I had lost confidence in the machine. I do run the drives continuously though, so maybe this should be expected. With the new computer I put in a SSD so I can get quicker start times and allow the computer and drives to hibernate, so hopefully the drives will last longer.

4 out of 5 eggsHad a few problems

Pros: -Fast
-Large Capcity

Cons: -Loud
-Had a DOA. So I knock one egg off for that, but I RMA'd it and gotten another one fairly quick and haven't had any other problems with.

Other Thoughts: Nice HDD, a little frustrating though that I had a DOA.

1 out of 5 eggsBroken Drive

Pros: None

Cons: OS refused to install and gave an error message "this drive is about to fail. Replace with a good drive to proceed." Then the drive could not be formatted. I was sent a piece of rubbish.

Other Thoughts: Hopefully the replacement drive will work..once I get it.

3 out of 5 eggs1 For 2 OK

Pros: I have used these drives on several PCs with good luck. Very fast and quiet. Have improved performance on each PC. Five stars for performance, BUT -----

Cons: Unfortunately one of the two delivered in the latest order was DOA. Never happened to me before. Guess it's getting more common with HDs from what I'm seeing in reviews of all manufacturers. Zero stars.

Other Thoughts: I received my RMA quickly, and have shipped the DOA unit back for replacement. Hope the next one is OK. Burns me up that I have to pay shipping costs for return of a unit that never worked for a second. A real ripoff as far as I am concerned.

3 out of 5 eggsForrest Gump of drives?

Pros: Quick & quiet.

Cons: Like the title says, you don't know what you're getting until you use it!

Other Thoughts: Ordered 3 of the EXACT same drives within a 1 week period, 2 were slow, load & clunky, the last was what I expected, smooth, quite, & zippy. All 3 were built into the exact same PC, part for part, no deviation what-so-ever.

What the heck WD? Where's the consistency? Life it NOT supposed to be like a box of hard drives...

No, I didn't bother to check what country they were from, or what build date, etc., who cares really? I shouldn't have to, after all, they're the EXACT same model.

This is frustrating.

1 out of 5 eggsBroken out of box

Pros: Large I guess?

Cons: As soon as OS was loaded it immediately gave me notices of harddrive failure. HD failed SMART test. DOA stinker.

Other Thoughts: What a waste of time and money for me, first time I've ever had a brand new computer component be broken right out of the box.
