1 out of 5 eggsWorst External Hard Drive Ever!

Pros: It was on sale, and it was 4TB.

Cons: The hard drive is constantly disconnecting and reconnecting itself to my PC, it does this all the time, even when transferring files; it is quite bothersome.

if I am watching a movie that I have stored on it, the hard drive will disconnect and reconnect at least two times during the course of the movie, forcing me to close WMP and reopen it again and try to find the point I was at.

When I am playing a videogame (located on my Samsung 840 pro SSD) this external hard drive manages to interfere with that as well with its constant disconnecting and reconnecting issue. Every time this happens it minimizes my videogame and brings up the hard drive folder, totally breaking the continuity of my gameplay.

The seek times are the worst I have ever seen, period. This hard drive can take up to 1 full minute just to open up after I double click it. (No it is not a system issue, it is this specific external hard drives' issue; I custom built an $1,800 PC with all the bells and whistles, but I went with an off-brand for the external hard drive because there were no other 4TB externals drives available on the market for a reasonable price at that time).

Other Thoughts: This is the absolute worst hard drive I have ever owned and will never buy another product from HGST ever. I mainly keep it unplugged from my computer anymore as it causes severe lag in my boot sequence as well, like 1-2 minutes at least. Without the hard drive connected, my PC boots in less than 5 seconds. Totally unacceptable.

This hard drive has had these issues since day one, but I accepted it because I thought I got a good deal on it considering other 4TB drives were like $300 at the time. As time has gone on, and the price of external hard drives have decreased, this hard drives' issues have only continued to provide me with an ample source frustration.

I am not looking for a replacement or some sorry apology from the manufacturer, I am just trying to do my due diligence and warn other possible consumers of this product that it is absolute garbage. I would not even give the thing away it is so problematic.

1 out of 5 eggsDead out of the box

Pros: Unable to evaluate, the drive never spun up.

Cons: The drive was detected by the system but physically never spun up making a repeating clicking sound.

Other Thoughts: This is the first bad drive I have received from Newegg so I didn't think to test it within the 30 day window before trying to use it and had to use the manufactures RMA warranty to get a replacement. Hopefully the second drive performs better.

1 out of 5 eggsNo respect for the consumer

Pros: None so far.

Cons: If you are interested in buying a hard disk from this manufacturer, be ADVISED: If you get unlucky and your drive is "dead on
arrival", be prepared to wait a very, very long time to get a new one. I filled in a request for RMA (no. 37817411) and 63 days
have passed since my RMA was issued (2014-08-05). I sent my unit to an authorized repair center, but manufacturer received my
unit only on September 2nd. And then, silence, no heard from them. Upon recent contact, the Repair Center keeps telling the
manufacturer does not have a single unit to ship me for replacement. It´s unbelivable! I´m very dissapointed at HGST. And I have completely lost my faith in product´s quality!

1 out of 5 eggsHow Awful The Worst ever !!!!

Pros: Pretty Box

Cons: Worst, slowest access external HD I've ever encountered. Tried 2 - both slowed boot and shutdown by 20x to 40x long. Acronis BU fails even with extended timeout. Called HGST and told 'no issues'. Why bother with USB 3.0 when the drive response is well less than USB 1? If I open 'Computer' it extends showing drives from less than a second to 6 - 8 minutes - and this is on a top end desktop, high CPU, 32G, 4k SSD boot drive. Shutdown stops! - until I pull the plug on this drive, upon which the machine stops immediately. This drive is an embarrassment to HGST and calls into question the quality of their products if they allowed this onto the market.

Other Thoughts: Other than comments above, I still think the box is pretty....

5 out of 5 eggsSolid affordable storage

Pros: Affordable storage without a big performance hit. I extensively tested these drives then tore them out of their cases and thew the bare drives in a server. I put 3 of these in raid that get regular writes and a lot of reads. The storage server streams to 3-4 other machines on my network everyday. The first drive came in DOA but it happens. Aside from that Ive been happy with how solid they are. First time trying HGST since its been re branded and Ive be pleasantly happy with their price and performance. Another plus is now I have 3 USB 3.0 external enclosures :)

Cons: No sense that the externals are cheaper than the internals.

1 out of 5 eggsDecent drive, but disconnects with windows 8.1

Pros: Good price
Nice enclosure design

Cons: Constantly disconnects/reconnects any time it is not in use.
Seems to be a compatibility issue with Windows 8, but there is NOTHING on their webpage to indicate a problem or help with a solution. I am very disappointed in this as my Seagate external drives run just fine, no matter the OS.

2 out of 5 eggsFailed after a year

Pros: Huge storage capacity.

Cons: Starting to fail me after changing my pc. It ran great on my old PC. I find this odd. Thought it was driver, usb issues, update everything thats needs to be updated. Always took care of it, gentle use. It still reads, and writes but I get these random disconnects and clicking sound more recently. Using different check disk software and it freezes (disconnects/reconnects) all the time. Its just great that it failed me a few months after the 1 year manufacturer warranty.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, this could be an OS issue if you are running Windows 8 in your new environment. We can also help to troubleshoot any other issues. Please contact our Technical Support team.

1 out of 5 eggsUsed once and failed

Pros: Purchased over a year ago because of the price.

Cons: I wanted to use this as a offline backup for all my movies, pictures and music. I backup everything and set it aside. 1 year later I wanted to update my backups. plug it in my computer and the drive failed. useless. good thing I still have my original files in my computer or else it would been a major headache. but now its been over a year I can't even claim manufacturer's warranty for replacement. waste of $160 and time. don't get this drive.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello, could you pleae contact me at to look further into your issue. Thank you.

3 out of 5 eggsSLOOOW USB3.0

Pros: It works well.

Cons: Performance, at least for me, is lacking. On USB 3.0 I was getting only about 42MB/sec. That's barely better than USB 2 speeds. I only have one machine that has USB 3.0 ports, so I couldn't try another host, but I have other USB 3.0 stuff I've used on that machine and it can do >100MB/sec. I finally just cracked open the case on the drive enclosure (which I failed to do without fairly destroying the case) and put the drive on a SATA port. There I can sustain about 95MB/sec. This is still quite slow compared to other 3T and 4T drives I have, but that's not too surprising since this HGST is specifically a low-power, slow RPM drive.

Other Thoughts: I'm using the drive as an offline backup for my NAS. Now and then I slip the drive into an external SATA base, mount it, run rsync, and then pull it. It's working fine for that. 150MB/sec would be nicer, but 95MB/sec is usable. 42MB/sec... It takes 26 hours to write 4 TB at 42MBsec.

Just understand if you get this model it's not about performance.

Yo, HGST... If you're gonna give us a USB 3.0 drive, could you give us one that can beat USB 2 speeds?
