1 out of 5 eggsJUNK

Pros: Good price

Cons: Crapped out after less than a year. I bought HGST based upon its reputation for reliability, and am extremely disappointed.

Other Thoughts: BUY ANOTHER BRAND!

2 out of 5 eggsBad Enclosure Electronics (Device Disappears)

Pros: Large drive, USB 3 interface.

Cons: The drive simply disappears from the computer's device list, usually after a few days but sometimes within a few hours; the enclosure's SATA-USB bridge seems to be at fault. I eventually got fed up and pried open the enclosure (not easy) to snag the bare drive, and put it in a MacAlly enclosure. No more disappearing device that way!

Other Thoughts: HGST's internal drives have always been reliable for me, so it was surprising to have such a bad experience with this external drive.

5 out of 5 eggsgreat drive

Pros: Fast easy to use. Have transferred over 2 TB to this drive so far, and love it.

Cons: Got to admit, the cord is awfully short, and the internal connector is a pain. I plugged in the cable, and almost broke the entire connector off. Finally got it in, now it works great.

Other Thoughts: Would be better if it came with a longer USB 3 cable. It would be easier to use, and strengthen the USB connector on the unit its self. As I said above almost broke mine just plugging it in the first time.

5 out of 5 eggsLong-term review for the 3 units I own

Pros: The price point is better than buying an internal drive.
Consistent data transfer speeds around 90 mbs for each drive via USB 3.0 ports.

Great NAS back-up drives.

Cons: Provided cable is of poor quality and I bet is the reason for most of the other reviewers issues. Try a different cable before you look at sending the unit back.

USB 2.0 speeds crawl at 24 mbs

Other Thoughts: After reading all the poor reviews on this drive, I felt I needed to provide some information on my long-term experience with 3 of these drives.

If you are having speed issues, try using a better cable before you blame the hard drive. Also, the drive itself is a 5900 rpm drive. This drive is more for data storage and NOT for "life in the fast lane". People just need to be realistic in their expectations when using a 4T 5900rpm drive.

I find that even switching from the front USB 3.0 ports to the back pane 3.0 USB ports provided a better transfer speed experience. Try using different USB ports if you are having speed issues. I regularly get ~90,mbs transfer from my NAS and when coping from one 4T drive the other 4T. Again, I own 3 of these and they have all performed well for over a year.

If you want faster speeds, go with the HGST Touro PRO version. That spins at 7200 rpm.

In time, I'll end up pulling the drives from the cases and using them in my NAS. I'm betting I get even better speeds by eliminating the low cost HGST cable and enclosure.

IMO, The RAW drive is still worth the purchase if you can get in for the 129.00 price point.

1 out of 5 eggsWorst External Hard Drive Ever!

Pros: It was on sale, and it was 4TB.

Cons: The hard drive is constantly disconnecting and reconnecting itself to my PC, it does this all the time, even when transferring files; it is quite bothersome.

if I am watching a movie that I have stored on it, the hard drive will disconnect and reconnect at least two times during the course of the movie, forcing me to close WMP and reopen it again and try to find the point I was at.

When I am playing a videogame (located on my Samsung 840 pro SSD) this external hard drive manages to interfere with that as well with its constant disconnecting and reconnecting issue. Every time this happens it minimizes my videogame and brings up the hard drive folder, totally breaking the continuity of my gameplay.

The seek times are the worst I have ever seen, period. This hard drive can take up to 1 full minute just to open up after I double click it. (No it is not a system issue, it is this specific external hard drives' issue; I custom built an $1,800 PC with all the bells and whistles, but I went with an off-brand for the external hard drive because there were no other 4TB externals drives available on the market for a reasonable price at that time).

Other Thoughts: This is the absolute worst hard drive I have ever owned and will never buy another product from HGST ever. I mainly keep it unplugged from my computer anymore as it causes severe lag in my boot sequence as well, like 1-2 minutes at least. Without the hard drive connected, my PC boots in less than 5 seconds. Totally unacceptable.

This hard drive has had these issues since day one, but I accepted it because I thought I got a good deal on it considering other 4TB drives were like $300 at the time. As time has gone on, and the price of external hard drives have decreased, this hard drives' issues have only continued to provide me with an ample source frustration.

I am not looking for a replacement or some sorry apology from the manufacturer, I am just trying to do my due diligence and warn other possible consumers of this product that it is absolute garbage. I would not even give the thing away it is so problematic.

1 out of 5 eggsDead out of the box

Pros: Unable to evaluate, the drive never spun up.

Cons: The drive was detected by the system but physically never spun up making a repeating clicking sound.

Other Thoughts: This is the first bad drive I have received from Newegg so I didn't think to test it within the 30 day window before trying to use it and had to use the manufactures RMA warranty to get a replacement. Hopefully the second drive performs better.

1 out of 5 eggsNo respect for the consumer

Pros: None so far.

Cons: If you are interested in buying a hard disk from this manufacturer, be ADVISED: If you get unlucky and your drive is "dead on
arrival", be prepared to wait a very, very long time to get a new one. I filled in a request for RMA (no. 37817411) and 63 days
have passed since my RMA was issued (2014-08-05). I sent my unit to an authorized repair center, but manufacturer received my
unit only on September 2nd. And then, silence, no heard from them. Upon recent contact, the Repair Center keeps telling the
manufacturer does not have a single unit to ship me for replacement. It´s unbelivable! I´m very dissapointed at HGST. And I have completely lost my faith in product´s quality!

1 out of 5 eggsHow Awful The Worst ever !!!!

Pros: Pretty Box

Cons: Worst, slowest access external HD I've ever encountered. Tried 2 - both slowed boot and shutdown by 20x to 40x long. Acronis BU fails even with extended timeout. Called HGST and told 'no issues'. Why bother with USB 3.0 when the drive response is well less than USB 1? If I open 'Computer' it extends showing drives from less than a second to 6 - 8 minutes - and this is on a top end desktop, high CPU, 32G, 4k SSD boot drive. Shutdown stops! - until I pull the plug on this drive, upon which the machine stops immediately. This drive is an embarrassment to HGST and calls into question the quality of their products if they allowed this onto the market.

Other Thoughts: Other than comments above, I still think the box is pretty....

5 out of 5 eggsSolid affordable storage

Pros: Affordable storage without a big performance hit. I extensively tested these drives then tore them out of their cases and thew the bare drives in a server. I put 3 of these in raid that get regular writes and a lot of reads. The storage server streams to 3-4 other machines on my network everyday. The first drive came in DOA but it happens. Aside from that Ive been happy with how solid they are. First time trying HGST since its been re branded and Ive be pleasantly happy with their price and performance. Another plus is now I have 3 USB 3.0 external enclosures :)

Cons: No sense that the externals are cheaper than the internals.
