2 out of 5 eggsDead

Pros: capacity

Cons: dead after little use

Other Thoughts: I'd used this as a duplicate/back-up drive to keep in a lock-box at a climate controlled storage facility.
It hadn't been plugged in or even touched for the past year.
Tonight I went to update the files and a few minutes into the transfer I was notified "Encountered an Error..."
The drive no longer spins.
Owned for 2 years, 3 weeks. Dead.
End of Story.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid performer

Pros: Dependable, fast, quiet.

Cons: Can't really find any

Other Thoughts: Have been using this as a main media repository and backup hard drive for over a year now. Thanks to the USB 3.0 interface it transfers very, very fast. I have other external hard drives attached for various purposes and the Touro has NEVER disconnected, not been found, or any other glitch that can haunt these types of devices. Also, it sits on my desktop and although I occasionally hear the HD chatter when it is active, it is so quiet that I have to give it 5 eggs for noise. All in all a very good purchase and will be buying again when I need more storage.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive and Capacity

Pros: I like this drive because of the large capacity and the USB 3.0. I purchased 2 of these drives in Oct 2013 for backup use and streaming media over the network. They are very reliable. I've never had a problem with data integrity. Includes Hitachi 7200 RPM drive!

Cons: Only con is that you can't turn off the sleep mode. There is a driver from HGST that says you can turn it off, but after 1½ years I still haven't figured out how to turn it off. Spin-up and access are still quick but I removed an egg for this.

Other Thoughts: Awesome drive. I paid $169.99 each in Oct 13 from Newegg, glad to see they hold their value!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat

Pros: It works great for me. I got mine in 10/14 and I have had no problems. I thought it their may be a problem with it running slow because I have it connected to a 2.0 usb, but no.

Cons: none

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great but get it on sale

Pros: Run for over 1.5 years now, 24/7 for a majority of that time.
Fast HGST 7200rpm drive yet runs cool
Stackable, doesn't look bad at all.

Cons: It's annoying when the drive goes to sleep even though it does wake up quickly

Other Thoughts: Buy it at $140-160 not $200. I've had this thing for over 1.5 years now and it's been a champ. It's run nearly 24/7 for probably a majority of that time as well. This has likely changed but at the time I bought it, the HDD was one of the awesome Hitachi 7200rpm drives and it was cheaper to buy the external than the internal. I left it in the case rather than void the warranty.

2 out of 5 eggsbad, no read or write speeds

Pros: its 4 TB drive, but its not a NAS grade drive and i've never used this brand before so im abit skeptical for this size of storage in a drive for the price. Thats about the only pro

Cons: They say in the specs its USB 3.0!! WOW, its capible up to 5 gigabits per second which is UP TO 625 MEGABYTES per second.

Now with that in mind, the fast drive speed of 7200rpm is incorrect, that is the speed of which the hard drive platters inside the drive move. Not at all a measurement of the drive's speed! 7200rpm is the standard for hard drives and it's been that way for over 10 years! No hard drive in our current time can have a read or write of 625MB's. SSD's are much closer to this number and some hit it depending on the SSD.

Other Thoughts: If you need storage, sure, this works but don't expect it to last forever. its a consumer model and not built for 24/7 use, that and a power saver mode really reduces performance for it. So all that speed just left you. You'd be MUCH better off taking the drive out and installing it in your own computer.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat product!

Pros: Great price, big drive, good transfer speeds, and so far very reliable

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: I bought this to house my 2.5 TB iTunes library as well as a few other backup items (photos, eBooks, etc.). It's been very reliable and I have not noticed any blatant sluggishness. I typically add one or two movies or albums at a time, and it only takes a few seconds.

3 out of 5 eggsNot up to HGST standards

Pros: The second one received after RMA'ing the first, tested perfectly and works as a backup device. I bought it on sale, so the price was fantastic, although compared to prices just a few years ago, it was still expensive. Newegg delievered it in just a few days, and very inexpensively.

Cons: The first one received could not reliabily record data; less than half the files copied to it verified. The SMART info said it had thousands of operating hours, although it was sold as a new device. The second one has the SMART interface disabled, so it is impossible to tell its age. Nevertheless, despite the fact that it sits directly in front of a large floor fan, after a few hours of use it repeatedly tells the computer that its temperature is critically high.

I bought this disk to replace another that said it was failing. By the time I received a working disk and had tested both of them, the old disk would not read. Who knows what was lost?

Other Thoughts: Consolidation in the hard disk industry indicates that it is concerned with competition from SSDs, which are sold by memory companies. Hard disks have some natural advantages that are not going away: They store much more data, they are less costly per byte of data stored, and they are more reliable. Yet all the hard disks, from two manufacturers, that I have bought recently have taken several RMAs to receive one that works. Why is the industry competing by putting its worst foot forward? Now is the time for the industry to celebrate its natural advantages and adhere to its traditional quality standards.

3 out of 5 eggsnot so sure about these.

Pros: Price, appearance, quiet

Cons: drop off computer

Other Thoughts: I had two of the 3TB models in my 20TB collection of movies (Guess I should break down and use a RAID with higher end drives) They read and wrote fine, just kept dropping off so the compuer didn't see them. Rarely have I ever had that problem with other drives. Sometimes twice a day I would have to unplug and replug them, gets old. Ended up using them as back ups where they sit in their boxes, work great for that. Replaced with Seagates, almost no trouble with those. WD has given me mixed results, I have a 3TB MY Book with no trouble at all but a few months ago I had two identical WDs both got bad after around 2TBs each. Stopped writing, kept freezing the computer, couldn't even transfer to other drives as the transfer rate was 1-5kbs at USB 3.0 !!! Had a Toshiba that lasted a few days after the year warranty. Tried Samsung, but just as nonpowered back ups. Anyone have any ideas for large movie collections thats more reliable? Anyone try SSD? (Know too expensive now, but in a few years, who knows?)

3 out of 5 eggsGreat BUT ...

Pros: - 4tb capacity (of course smaller when formatted)
- Nice looking enclosure; vented too
- USB 3.0

Cons: - No on/off power button
- Spins down after about 5 minutes of inactivity
- Runs kind of warm to hot; even having a vented enclosure

Other Thoughts: It's a great drive for temporary archiving (no HDD or SSD should be used for long term archiving anyways) of your library of files.

I purchased this thinking it would be great to use for editing (photos, videos, music) but if you don't constantly utilize this drive, it will go into a "power save" mode ... which is not good for editing but great for general purpose use as it will save the disk's and save a bit of power too.

Even for general use, just be aware that if you haven't accessed this drive within about 5 minutes, it will spin down. Then when you do need to access the drive, it will take about 30 - 40 seconds to spin back up.

I wish HGST had put this on their website for the specs. I probably would not have purchased it if I had known this prior to buying ... at least for my needs.

Still, overall a decent external storage HDD w/USB 3.0.
