The brand new Seagate Barracuda LP (low-power) family is here, designed and built by the desktop performance leader, but with the primary focus on a low-power, cool and quiet drive at an entry-level price. This drive allows users to do more while using less power. The Barracuda LP drives deliver on low-power consumption. But low power no longer means slow power.

Benchmark performance results prove the 5900RPM spin speed advantages (when compared to competitor drives that spin at 5400RPM). And these drives are cool and easy on the PC, often requiring fewer fans, a smaller power supply and lower maintenance costs. It’s the definition of energy efficiency.

1 out of 5 eggsCame with fatally flawed firmware

Pros: I got 2 of them for free because a friend had so many problems he didn't trust them anymore. (even if I could fix them)

Cons: These things came with flawed firmware on them (CC34). They were clicking like crazy and constantly losing connection.

Other Thoughts: You need to flash firmware CC35 onto these drives otherwise they were doing the click of death. Go to seagates website and download the ISO image and burn it to a disk. Boot to the disk and use it to upgrade the firmware to a tested version. I say "tested" because nobody could have truly tested these things at seagate given how obvious the problems were. Somebody needs a new guy in charge of the QA department. ;)

1 out of 5 eggsShame...

Pros: Lots of space for not a lot of money... but read the cons...

Cons: Started clicking just under a year old.

Other Thoughts: It's a shame... and an awful waste of money to have to replace a hard drive after just shy of a year.

1 out of 5 eggsDismal failure

Pros: Usually this brand is reliable. This time it was NOT!

Cons: This HD operated as promised for a few months and then failed. When I tried to re-format it, it would only accept a .5Tb partition instead of the promised 1.5Tb. After many efforts and trials with various Seagate tech software programs, another tech confirmed a failure on the HD's internal logic. Now I'm faced with a secondary hassle trying to get Seagate to replace it. I'm not hopeful.

1 out of 5 eggsMove on!

Pros: It's huge! Started clicking before it died.

Cons: It died. My drive now clicks like crazy. CrystalDiskInfo reported some problems with it. After 53 Power Ons and 7,262 hours of being on the drive needs to be retired. It was good while it lasted. And I tried looking up my warranty on Seagate's website and it says the drive doesn't exist. I got it at a big box Frying store!

Other Thoughts: Good while it lasted. My last Seagate anything.

1 out of 5 eggsBuyer Beware

Pros: Low power.

Cons: Bought 8 of these LP drives 4 were D. O. A.
Own 8 of the 7200.11..... never 1 problem.
Selling the other 4 before I loose data.

Other Thoughts: I asked Seagate to send me new drives instead of Re-certified drives and they told me its not their policy.
I replied I sent you new drives I want new in return.

GOOD LUCK SEAGATE - Never will I buy Seagate again!!!!!!

1 out of 5 eggsDeath from the Click

Pros: Great for the space to price ratio

Cons: Started the click of death after a few months but was still able to access the drive and information. After 9 months of this i finally wasn't able to transfer information between computer and external drive, had to unplug and plug to reset connection during transfers. Got fed up and went for a new brand.

Other Thoughts: You get what you pay for....Seagate just lost a customer

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: cheap, higher capacity.

Cons: it's not 7200rpm

Other Thoughts: 30 days from invoice date today and it's starting to die... clicking, bad response times, read/writing going downhill. It'll be shot any day now

1 out of 5 eggsTerrible Drive

Pros: none.

Cons: This drive failed within 2 months and Seagate replaced it under warranty. Now it has failed again with the same issue of shutting itself down. Tried it in two different machines and a USB sata dock. Seagate gives you a hard time because their diag software does not find an issue or give a failure code. This will get costly since I have to pay shipping to them each time it fails.

Other Thoughts: I will be sticking to WD form now on.

1 out of 5 eggsDisaster

Pros: Nice capacity for a good price

Cons: Quit working after five months

Other Thoughts: I bought this drive from Newegg on 2/9/10. As of yesterday (7/17/10) it's DOA. Since I was using it as an external drive, I tried it on another computer - As they say, it was still dead. Now I have to use that computer to store a partial backup of important files until I can get a replacement for the Seagate. But get this...

The drive is under warranty. However, I have to pay to ship it back, and in return, Seagate will send a REFURBISHED drive with a ninety day warranty, and all my data is on the drive I need to return - which they claim they will wipe clean.

Needless to say I was shocked. I figured I'd have to send the drive with all my info on it, but the rest was just adding insult to injury. A five-month-old drive and I don't even get a new replacement?! And a warranty that amounts to substantially less than the original?! And I get to pay for the privilege?!

The way I see it, you're playing Russian Roulette if you buy this drive.

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Cheap. Usually. Price per GB is very low.

Cons: Cheap. As in poor quality. I have 6 of these drives and one of them failed within 7 months. Within two years of service I've had to replace 3 more. They get average use, it's not like they're seeing heavy activity 24/7.

Whatever happened to the Seagate that built rock-solid hardware? Bought a different model of Seagate 1.5TB drive and we'll see how well that holds up.

Other Thoughts: Anyone know of any companies out there that are actually producing good quality hard drives nowadays? In the market for more drives, guess it's time to do some research before I commit to more Seagate drives.
