2 out of 5 eggsDrive Failed 3 months after warranty expired

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda ST500DM002 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Inexpensive drive
No special OS tweaks necessary as with an SSD

Cons: Slower than an SSD by an order of magnitude.
Lives up to its Barracuda legacy. NOT built for longevity.
Hard Drive lasted just over two years, in a light use environment. (Internet/email box)

5 out of 5 eggsPretty Good HDD

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda ST500DM002 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Good Capacity for the price. Probably could've spent about $20 more and gotten 1 TB but whatever. I've heard that Seagate Drives are unreliable, but this one worked just fine for me. i wasn't looking for ALOT of room so this works just fine.

Cons: N/A

4 out of 5 eggsAverage Performing Drive

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda ST500DM002 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Decent warranty for the price
I bought the 1 TB model as well as the 500 GB and here are their benchmark results:

Crystal Disk Mark – 500 GB
• Sequential: Read = 140.3 MB/s, Write = 136.0 MB/s
• 512k: Read = 52.42 MB/s, Write = 78.90 MB/s
• 4k: Read = 0.670 MB/s, Write = 1.105 MB/s
• 4k QD32: Read = 1.824 MB/s, Write = 0.872 MB/s

Crystal Disk Mark – 1 Tb
• Sequential: Read = 172.3 MB/s, Write = 164.0 MB/s
• 512k: Read = 69.60 MB/s, Write = 98.11 MB/s
• 4k: Read = 1.028 MB/s, Write = 1.716 MB/s
• 4k QD32: Read = 2.540 MB/s, Write = 1.754 MB/s

HD Tune – 500 GB
• Minimum: 68.4 MB/s
• Maximum: 137.3 MB/s
• Average: 108.9 MB/s
• Access Time: 15.5 ms
• Burst Rate: 145.9 MB/s

HD Tune – 1 Tb
• Minimum: 52.2 MB/s
• Maximum: 191.2 MB/s
• Average: 159.7 MB/s
• Access Time: 15.7 ms
• Burst Rate: 164.4 MB/s

Temperature
• 500 GB: 87.8 °F
• 1 Tb: 91.4 °F

I also tested the new drive on a SATA II connection and as I figured the results were within a margin of error as some values were higher and some were lower than when on the SATA III connection. So if you don’t have a SATA III capable motherboard, don’t worry about it.

Cons: The performance is average especially compared to the 1 TB models.

Other Thoughts: Performance compared to a 1 TB model is quite noticeable and given how close the pricing is, just buy a 1 TB even if you don’t need the space, the performance difference is worth the few extra dollars.

Not related to the drive but Newegg’s new hard drive packaging is fantastic as the drive is held together so tightly I could barely get it out of the box.

*All tests were conducted three times to ensure accuracy and repeatability of results.

4 out of 5 eggsreliable data/2nd HDD

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda ST500DM002 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Reliable since installation as OS drive and subsequent reuse as backup drive. Highly recommended for its reliability and price if you are a savvy customer.

Cons: Latency is an issue with all mechanical devices. I don't have data to back up my impression but this drive seemed to have longer latency on heavy nonsequential reads. After replacing system drive to a decent SSD it has worked well as a data/backup for the system. Didn't notice read or write rates above 70 MB/s (roughly, averaged over 1000ms) monitoring via process hacker copied a 700 MB file to SSD from HDD and HDD from SSD. Felt slowish compared to other 7200 RPM drives I've used.

Other Thoughts: Overall a good product given one uses it as an external USB 3/eSATA drive or secondary internal drive. Latency would effect RAID 0 so look elsewhere for that too.

5 out of 5 eggsthese drives are great

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda ST500DM002 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: I have 4 of these drives raid 0 and a 2 gig for the +1 portion of the raid... I had to replace my first drive in almost 5 years of 24/7 usage and I mean HEAVY usage.... I didn't get this drive yet but if it is anything like the others it will be a great drive and cheep

Cons: with running a total of 5 drives in the case it gets very warm. I had to create a "cooler" for the drive bays as they were almost to hot to touch without the "cooler"

Other Thoughts: This drive is not the fastest on the market. BUT for storing my iTunes library and constantly being used by myself and my family for all of our music / movies / tv shows 24/7 there is nothing bad you can say about the drive...

1 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda ST500DM002 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: The reviews seemed mostly positive and the prices were reasonable.

Cons: Dead on Arrival

Other Thoughts: This is my third (and final) Seagate HDD. Previously I had tried a 1TB and a 1.5TB, both of which died in horrible ways. The first had occasional, quiet "buzz saw" noises and then one day it had extremely loud clicking, loud enough to wake up my neighbors, like a car crash. I unplugged it immediately. The second one just kinda died after about a year of use. This new one was dead on arrival. I take good care of my stuff, but it seems these drives are just cursed (or poorly constructed).

I'm never buying a Seagate HDD ever again, and neither should you.
