With USB 3.0 FireWire 800 support and backward compatibility with USB 2.0 and FireWire 400, it works with nearly any PC or Mac, providing extreme speeds that enable you to transfer a 700MB video file in less than seven seconds with USB 3.0. With available 256-bit AES hardware encryption, you can easily protect your data from unwanted access by simply assigning a password. Store, back up and transport your content with SuperSpeed plug and play connectivity.

Triple Interface for the Best Performance

The LaCie Rugged Triple Hard Disk provides universal connectivity: you've got the superior speeds of USB 3.0 and FireWire 800, and full backward compatibility with FireWire 400 and USB 2.0. You can transfer a 700MB video file in less than seven seconds with USB 3.0, compared to 25 seconds with USB 2.0*** With the Rugged Triple's 7200RPM model, you can even achieve speeds up to 110Mbps. Whether your goal is super speed or complete compatibility, the Rugged Triple has everything you need.

Four Levels of Rugged Protection

The Rugged is one of our most popular hard disks, and it's the best way to protect your data. It conforms to military standard 810-F, and can support drops from up to 6ft (2m). It helps you carry your files with confidence, no matter where the road takes you, thanks to its shock-absorbing sleeve, aluminum anti-scratch casing, internal rubber bumpers, and a 1000G shock-resistant hard drive. Calculations are based on average read time.

A Fifth Level of Data Security

LaCie AES 256-bit encryption software comes standard with the Rugged Triple. We've made it easy for you to create a password-protected area on your drive where you can securely store all of your confidential information. AES 256-bit encryption technology is one of the most robust on the market today, and makes the Rugged Triple more secure than ever.

1 out of 5 eggsDrive fine, connector not

Pros: Looks nice. The drive itself worked fine. Rugged orange rubber bumper is a good idea.

Cons: Worked for about 9 months, then the connector began to act spotty. It became difficult to maintain obtain or maintain a connection.

The special funky and delicate USB connector that manufacturers seem to be so fond of now was just not making good contact anymore.

Tried different cables, but the connector in the drive case itself is bad.

Other Thoughts: No way to even salvage the drive inside, as LaCie uses the same type of weird screws with pins in the middle that Apple uses on their products to lock them down.

1 out of 5 eggsDead after 3 days

Pros: Great design idea, capacity, USB 3.0 and firewire.

Cons: Price

Other Thoughts: Drive died after 3 days. It was extremely frustrating because I had loaded 6 hours worth of work onto the drive. Come Friday and I need access the files and the drive would not show up in "Computer." I plugged it into my mac and still nothing. I could hear the disk spin but nothing would happen.

The data on the disk were crucial so I had to figure out a way to access the data. I thought to myself "what if the controller just went bad but the disk is still good," well what do you know? I took the risk, cracked open the case (voided my warranty obviously), plugged into my desktop and bam! My drive was working and my files were retrived. Now I have the enclosure laying around in pieces but atleast i got my data back. At the end, it was indeed the controller that went bad and not the drive.

I am out 140 bucks...

5 out of 5 eggsNo complaints

Pros: Fast transfer times, no issues with reliability, consistently stays in my backpack and doesn't show any signs of damage/wear, all necessary connection cables provided

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I was going to complain about a seemingly-proprietary connection cable between the drive and the USB 3.0 cord but it looks like that's just the new version of the USB "mini-b" connector. It's my first USB 3.0 device so I didn't know what to expect :).
I don't think my usage of this drive really warrants necessity of its "rugged construction" but I will say that the build quality has held up for the last couple of months despite riding in my backpack every day.
