2 out of 5 eggsGreat Concept - seems to have died though

This review is from: Seagate Central STCG2000100 2TB Cloud Storage System

Pros: Connects to the network without too much hassle. streams pictures and videos to apple devices through the app just fine while connected to the home network. Is accessible through the network by way of a shared drive. I like the concept of remote access through the internet.

Cons: Seems to have died. It won't connect to the network anymore. I cannot reset it either. It is not accessible through the app, the network, or the internet. This is a great concept, but it HAS to last longer than a year or two. Also, the remote access through the internet is pretty slow :(

4 out of 5 eggsGreat looking device

This review is from: Seagate Central STCG2000100 2TB Cloud Storage System

Pros: 2TB of storage. USB printer support. Looks good.

Cons: Not blazing fast. UI is not intuitive.

Other Thoughts: The price seems in line with the performance.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Paul,

Thank you for taking the time to post a review of the Central 2TB Cloud Storage System.

We wanted to note that while your printer may work to the USB connection, we do not directly support this function. The USB port is designed to be used for add-on external storage devices. The external drive will then show as an additional network folder.

For more information on the UI functions of the drive, please reference the following User Guide:

We also wanted to provide our centralized link for help with setup, usage, installation, and troubleshooting of your Central Shared Storage drive. Please reference the link below:

3 out of 5 eggsCentral = Superb Home Media Hub

This review is from: Seagate Central STCG2000100 2TB Cloud Storage System

Pros: Installed easily. Streams everything I put on it (Movies & TV Shows) to my android phone (Verizon Galaxy S3) flawlessly! That is something I have been looking for for years. Backups work well, as expected. Internet connectivity also works great. I've connected to it from work several times and it is always there and accessible. Transfer speeds on LAN are very good: a 2TB video goes through in less than a minute on a GB Ethernet connection. It has great ventilation! Every external drive I've ever seen is like a little oven box with maybe one side vented... This thing has mesh with dust screen on the entire top and bottom and stays nice and cool so it will also be easy to vacuum clean when dust builds up. Awesome design.

Cons: PS3 can not see the media. It sees the drive and folders but does not see the media. Maybe if I do some research I will find a solution but for now as a PS3 media server it doesn't work. My Roku finds some of the videos but not all of them and that is a Roku defect (one of the many.) Everything that does stream through Roku looks and sounds great though.
Transfer of data / streaming over the internet is abysmal. Nothing I have tried will stream over internet and requires download which seems to take about about a minute per megabyte, sometimes much longer, sometimes less. Terrible for roaming access to your media library. A 1.2GB movie took almost three hours to download to my phone from a wi-fi connection at my office which has N (which my phone used) wi-fi and has a 30MBps connection. It is definitely the Seagate...

Other Thoughts: For PS3 just use PMS and a different hard drive/ NAS/ whatever. That works. This doesn't. The Roku does stream all of the videos it finds beautifully though so the Seagate Central is working great in that regard, but for some reason the files I shared with my Roku through the PC just work whereas some files on this drive don't even get recognized... Not exactly a seamless user experience, but the best is saved for last: This thing paired with my Galaxy S3 via the Seagate app and streams every video on it regardless! That is a life saver when the kids go to bed and I need to hit the back porch to toast a stogie and catch up on whatever I'm watching!
Bottom line: This is another failed attempt at what everyone wants to call "Cloud Storage." This thing isn't even close to what Google Drive or Drop Box can do when it comes to actually sharing data over the internet. It is very nice to be able to see and download your own files, but this is not going to turn your home computer into your own personal Netflix. It just doesn't do that.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Jeffrey G.,

5 out of 5 eggsJust installed my second

This review is from: Seagate Central STCG2000100 2TB Cloud Storage System

Pros: I now have two hooked to network. I have not had any issues with Seagate on my network so far. But networking is one of my skills. I truly think using the correct software makes a huge difference. I use two, Acronis true image and NTI 5.5

Cons: The software that comes with the product is useless other than install. After that I disable it.

Other Thoughts: Acronis is very good software that I use almost everyday. But reviews on the software on Newegg is horrible. I'm very happy with my set up. It saved me today on recovery on HD that I mess up on. It was my bad too.

5 out of 5 eggsSeagate Central

This review is from: Seagate Central STCG2000100 2TB Cloud Storage System

Pros: Absolutely love it, works perfectly. First thing you need to buy Acronis true image Premium with the family pack. If you have smart phone down load app so you look at all pictures any where in the world. very good software works hand to hand with all network storage. plus so much more.

Cons: none Top Quality Seagate Product

Other Thoughts: Shop around best buy have them on sale from time to time at much better price then Newegg. I'm buying more and more from best buy lately. Newegg for Acronis software. Perfect backups, Cloning and HD maintenance Also read reviews on other web sites.

2 out of 5 eggsSeagate Central

This review is from: Seagate Central STCG2000100 2TB Cloud Storage System

Pros: Bare bones consumer NAS to store and backup data. Easily setup for basic access to content, and works as advertised.

Cons: The remote access "Tappin" is dreadful! Slow does not describe how awful this choice of sevrvice is. Despite my best efforts to stream content locally on a gigabyte hardwired connection the unit still buffers every 2 seconds. What's up with this?

Other Thoughts: This replaced a Buffalo unit that bricked on me, (I'd never give them another cent for their products) but when it worked, it performed. Seagate has some work to do on this product to make it the device people want / need.

5 out of 5 eggsHome NAS

This review is from: Seagate Central STCG2000100 2TB Cloud Storage System

Pros: Insanely fast with gigabit connection - transferring 100s of GB at over 33MB/sec (my monitor is showing a solid average over 300Mbps). Mapped the network drive from Windows 7 and got to transferring within minutes. I've usually had good luck with Seagate drives, and assuming this one lasts a while, I am extremely pleased on bang for the buck. My main uses do not include remote access, but the iPhone app seemed to stream my HD videos quite well from within my network. I think to really see the advantages of this drive, having a gigabit switch is definitely a must.

Cons: Instructions are little lacking for anyone not familiar with how to configure connections to networked devices.

Other Thoughts: Not that looks have much bearing on how good a product is, I will have to say they made this drive look pretty nice - better than many external drives I've seen, anyways. Also, I would say that if you're looking to get Network storage, do not expect setup to be as easy as external USB storage (ie plug and play). Know a little bit about your network and you'll have this device up and going in no time!

2 out of 5 eggsbad gamble

This review is from: Seagate Central STCG2000100 2TB Cloud Storage System

Pros: quick transfer rates, easy set up.

Cons: dead in 6 months!

Other Thoughts: This item worked great for the first few months, then dead. Lights on, but no HDD activity. I was storeing personal information, so sending it back to Seagate is a no-go.

3 out of 5 eggsSamsung App Warning

This review is from: Seagate Central STCG2000100 2TB Cloud Storage System

Pros: Easy setup, works with with all my dnla gear, TV, Receiver, Xbox and access via wifi router and first gen ipad.

Good transfer speeds, no issues streaming music (primary purpose) via ethernet, central to router, dnla hardware connected to 10/100 switch that is connected to the router via 25ft cat6 cable. Cannot attest to video as yet butg may require a 10/100/1000 switch and or router for optimal streaming.

Cons: The promised Samsung Smart Hub Seagate Media App compatible with Samsung Smart Hub TV's and Blu-Ray Players model years 2012 on, is false. I have had to return a Samsung BD-F5900 ( is in the correct model year range) And no app in the app store. Fortunately Newegg was stellar on the return experience.

I had to hunt down an older model Samsung Player BD-E5900 that is on a hard to find list from Seagate ( this should be included in their advertising/product description) http://knowledge.seagate.com/articles/en_US/FAQ/005037en have suggested to Newegg to add this to their product description online so others who are purchasing this and or Samsung products because of this promised availability/compatibility can avoid the hassle and expense this has caused myself and Newegg.

Am an old dog and prefer to browse my music collection via album covers like back in the vinyl days. And the Seagate Samsung App promised this, when coupled with 2012 on Samsung smart hub devices.

I very very rarely watch dvds or blurays and purchased a supposedly compatible player just for this feature, if I was content with list or folder view (thumbnail views) w/o album cover art, hades my TV, Receiver and Xbox already do that.

If this is an important factor in purchasing a central and or Samung TV, Blu ray... be sure is on the list above or pass on the Central in lieu of something else that will.

Contacted Seagate support via phone weeks ago, and was promised they would contact engineering and get back to me, no word yet.

Else will be like many such as I going (insert favorite expletive) and getting naught but a stoney silence from Seagate. If this feature is of no consequence for your needs so far so good on the Central.

Other Thoughts: Myself, friends, family and a host of online freinds and associates will be looking to non Seagate hardrives, nas devices , media streamers, external storage devices etc... for sometime into the future...which saddens me a bit as Seagate drives have hitherto been my first choice over the years.

This issue has been noted and Seagate aware ofor sometime now, and they have yet to address it, or change their advertising , product description regarding this, nor appear to addressing it with an App update. That is inexcusable imho.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Prole,

Thank you for taking the time to post a review of the Central 2TB Network Storage System.

We wanted to note that you should be able to use your Samsung device with the Central as long as the Samsung is supported for DLNA and has AllShare. To use the Central with DLNA, please reference the following support article:

http://knowledge.seagate.com/articles/en_US/FAQ/005389en

We are working on updating the Seagate Media app for Samsung and should have an updated version available soon.

If you have additional questions or concerns, please feel free to contact our support staff and we will be happy to assist further:
