3 out of 5 eggsNoisy Drive

Pros: It does what I need, it just sits there and does it's job, it stores data and keeps running. I haven't had a problem at all with this drive. Or my 7 year old 1TB Fantom drive.

Cons: I have the 1TB Fantom drive that did me well, but I needed more storage so I bought this drive. The 1TB had some spin up noise, but nothing compared to this 2TB drive, it is very noisy when spinning up and while working. I have since bought another 4TB drive and this 2TB is still the noisiest drive. I tested the drive speed today on my 2013 iMac and it came in at 18 MB/s write and 23 MB/s Read.

Other Thoughts: I would say in general this is not a special drive, but it hasn't failed me and that is the most important.

4 out of 5 eggsGood drive with a quirk

Pros: Solid construction, aluminum case dissipates heat well. eSATA and USB interfaces. Low power idle mode.
Seems reliable, never had any data loss.

Cons: Mine has the Hitachi HDSSC3020ALA632 hard drive. The drive has a quirk - if the drive is idle for a long period, it will go into a hibernate mode. Later when you attempt to access the drive, it doesn't correctly come out of hibernation. This causes the WIN7 kernel to hang and the only way out is a power cycle.

This has never caused any data loss on the drive, but you can loose an open document from the re-boot. It may be possible to fix this with a firmware upgrade on the drive, but I have not found one yet.

Other Thoughts: I have another 1GB model Fantom GreenDrive that works fine. This problem seems to be related to this particular model Hitachi hard drive.

5 out of 5 eggsThree years of abuse and it's still working!

Pros: I have owned this hard drive for over 3 years now and it is still working just as good as the day i bought it.

eSATA 90MB/ps sustained
USB2.0 65MB/ps sustained
These numbers were obtained by transferring several hundred GB of video files.

Very tough and durable.
It's been dropped many times.
It has been left in my car overnight many times, even in the winter.
It has had beer spilled on it.

I use this drive to store my movie/TV show collection, and I watch at least a few hours of video each day, so it has a TON of hours on it.

To be honest, I expected it to have failed by now. None of the other externals I have had have lasted this long, and I have owned external drives from all the major manufacturers.

Cons: Didn't come with an eSATA cable.
The casing isn't aluminum, it's painted plastic.
It is quite tough though, as it has been dropped on concrete from about 3 feet and it didn't crack, just scratched the paint a bit.

I wish the USB2.0 speeds were as high as the eSATA speeds.

Other Thoughts: I have gone through a lot of external hard drives in my life, this has been the most reliable, longest lasting drive I have ever owned.

I am a movie/TV show hoarder. Everything I watch has been played directly from this hard drive over eSATA, and I download everything directly to this drive.

The first year and a half that I owned it, it never got turned off. It was constantly working, as I was downloading files to it 24/7, I'd watch them and then delete them to keep enough space to continue downloading new ones.

I figure it has had approximately 120TB of data written to it over it's lifetime.

Bottom line - This drive has lasted longer than anything from the "Big Name" manufacturers. I am a Fantom customer for life!

1 out of 5 eggsDrive is useless

Pros: None

Cons: Esata controller on drive/box doesn't seem to work properly, as mentioned in other reviews, the partition tables get corrupted. USB also seems to result in corrupted partitions. Drive is very loud and hot. Unable to reliably store anything on it.

Other Thoughts: Unfortunately the problems took a month or two to manifest, so I apparently have to deal with the manufacturer. They had me scan the drive with SMART tools, but it came up clean so I might be stuck with it.

5 out of 5 eggsAlmost 3 years and still going strong!

Pros: - Never a problem
- Power down feature keeps it cool and extends life

Cons: - Have to wait a sec for it to spin up after it's powered down, but considering the benefits of doing so I'll take it.

Other Thoughts: Have had this hanging off of a Win XP, Win 7, and now a Boxee with no complaints from any of em (USB only).

Knock on wood, it's been exactly what I expected.

5 out of 5 eggs2 YEARS STILL GOING STRONG!

Pros: They get the job done!

Cons: My pc has to wait for them to wake up so i can look at the files, i think they go to sleep so they don't overheat which is a good thing keep these babies cool.

Other Thoughts: I have 4 of those and man i'm surprised to see 2 years later the price got higher lol!
I was hoping to find the same at 4TB but i guess i have to wait technology evolves slow the past 2 years lol.

2 out of 5 eggswhat a junk

Pros: High storage capacity. Cheap.

Cons: E Sata connection stop working after 3 months. If you keep it standing it will start making noise, and eventually stop working.

Other Thoughts: Will never buy Fantom Drives again!!!

5 out of 5 eggsHas taken a lot of abuse, and is still kickin

Pros: Have had it for a year and a half. I keep all my video files on it, and I'm constantly streaming video from it. I probably use this drive at least 4 hours a day when I average it out. Extremely durable, i have dropped it many times. Good transfer rates.

Cons: Vibrates my keyboard, if I let it touch. And the price has skyrocketed since I bought it. (got it for $100 on newegg)
No E-Sata cable included, but I knew that when I bought it so no eggs off.

Other Thoughts: Heavy.

2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Performs as advertised.

Cons: Very noisy, very warm

Other Thoughts: I had this drive plugged to a PowerMac and now to an iMac. On either computer I was never able to make it so it wouldn't go to sleep. This is the biggest issue with this drive. It goes to sleep as soon as you don't use it and haven't found a way to control it. That means you have to wait 5-10 seconds every time you need to access the drive, and it will be very loud while it wakes up or goes to sleep!! very bothersome.

3 out of 5 eggsDoes what it should, but

Pros: Drive does as advertised
e-SATA works with no problems
Fast (about 40mb/s transfer speeds over e-SATA)

Cons: Aluminum case scratches plastic cases that it rests on
Loud clicking noises, which become annoying

Other Thoughts: I like this drive and it's a good deal for the price, but the clicking drives me insane. It's loud and never stops... going 24 hours a day. I am afraid of the heads going bad. I contacted support because this is an issue imo (seeing as I have 6 other drive, all of which are silent). All I got from support was "clicking is normal, but you can run a disk check to make sure the disk is okay".

Although it works, I probably won't buy again. Spend a few extra dollars to make sure you get a drive from a company that can replace a clicking one.

Just so everyone knows, my Fantom contains a Seagate.
