5 out of 5 eggsGreat drive

This review is from: WD My Passport Studio 2TB 2.5" USB 2.0 / Firewire800 Portable Hard Drive Model WDBS8P0020BBK-NESN

Pros: Firewire 800 speed
Reliable
Silent
Great design
Daisy-chaining FW 800

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I bought that drive a few months ago when my storage needs got over control. I needed something small to hook-up to my laptop who act as a desktop replacement. I did not want a desktop drive, too much hasle, noise and wires. I recommand that drive to any MBP owner.

4 out of 5 eggsDecent Backup Drive for Mac

This review is from: WD My Passport Studio 2TB 2.5" USB 2.0 / Firewire800 Portable Hard Drive Model WDBS8P0020BBK-NESN

Pros: 1. Compact good looking case. This is an attractive unit for sitting on your desk or to take with you.
2. Large storage capacity. 2 TB drive provides lots of capacity.
3. Powered by USB or FireWire connection to computer. No separate AC power needed.
4. Drive has one USB 2.0 and two FireWire 800 cables for connection to a computer for transferring files.
5. The second FireWire port can be used to daisy chain an additional external drive or other peripheral to a laptop.
6. Will work with Mac Timeline function. This was a super-easy drag and drop straightforward procedure.
7. Western Digital has fairly extensive library of downloads for use with Windows or Mac. A number of applicable FAQs are linked also.
8. Compatible with Mac OSX 10.4 and above.

Cons: 1. Windows and Mac OSs cannot be handled on the same drive. You must pick one or the other. Default is Mac. You must use the Western Digital website if you want the drive to be used for Windows backup. You need to format part or all of the drive as FAT32 to be able to backup Windows.
2. Print copy information supplied with drive is minimal. You must go to the Western Digital website if you want (and you do) detailed information and instructions on using this backup hard drive.
3. This drive does not handle USB3 or Thunderbolt.
4. Really short USB and Firewire cables.
5. The initial warranty period provided after registration was 1 month which did not meet the period advertised on the box (3 years). I questioned Western Digital about this and they did bump the limited warranty to 3 years.

Other Thoughts: This Western Digital My Passport Studio 2 TB drive was used with a MacBook 2.4 GHz Intel Core Duo CPU/2GB 1067 MHz DDR3 Memory/250 GB HD/Mac OSX 10.6 laptop. Backup was attempted with a Windows 7 machine.
The drive is supplied in the HFS+ format in order to provide a default backup of a Mac computer. To connect with a PC, you must follow the instructions and download the software provided on the Western Digital site http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=211&lang=en.
To setup the backup drive for the Mac, you just drag and drop the drive and security folders to the applications folder.
If you want to use the Mac Timeline function, setup is really easy. Timeline just saves as expected. All in all, this Western Digital drive performed decently with the Mac OSX 10.6 system. My initial backup of 36GB took 44 minutes.
When I went to the Western Digital website to register the product, the system limited the warranty to 1 month, whereas the warranty period is supposed to be 3 years according to the box in which the hard drive was supplied. I sent several e-mails to, and spoke with, Western Digital support to straighten out the issue. The warranty issue was resolved.
The manuals and instructions provided on the Western Digital website for the My Passport Studio backup hard drive were appropriate for the tasks performed. I am pleased with the performance of this device. I really look forward to using this drive in the future.

I will be submitting more reports in the future as this unit ages.

I rated this drive 4 star for the following reasons:

1. USB 2.0 rather than USB 3.0
2. Cable lengths for USB and Firewire were really short.
3. Windows backup required additional work (format in FAT)
4. Warranty issue required resolution.

If you just want the drive for Mac backup, you should be pleased with the device.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat drive with a USB 2.0 caveat

This review is from: WD My Passport Studio 2TB 2.5" USB 2.0 / Firewire800 Portable Hard Drive Model WDBS8P0020BBK-NESN

Pros: Comes pre-formatted for my MacBook Pro. Works flawlessly with Time Machine. Very nice external case. Made out of a hard metal that could probably take a few whacks with a bat. It's laptop-sized, so it'll fit in a bag real easy. 2 TB gives you plenty of space for anything that you can throw on it. My 3.5 GB Windows 8 ISO took exactly 60 seconds to copy over Firewire, so you're looking at about 60 MB/s transfer speed. This is nearly USB 3.0 speeds and should be plenty fast enough for home users. USB 2.0 doesn't fare so well, however......

Cons: USB 2.0 speeds are the usual max for USB 2.0 - about 25-30 MB/s from my unofficial methods (1 minute, 55 seconds for my same 3.5GB Win8 ISO). USB 2.0 is really a shame for this drive. I assume it's that way for technology/space saving reasons. Included USB 2.0 & Firewire 800 cables are super short, so unless you're planning on keeping your drive about a foot and a half away from your USB/1394b port, get some new cables. Also, it's a mini-usb cable, which you may have plenty of already (I know I sure do).

Other Thoughts: Would have preferred USB 3.0 to be included, so I docked one egg for that. Screws holding the enclosure together are super tiny - hope you have a small screwdriver - my security bit set didn't have one small enough, but I managed to use a super tiny flathead to get the screws out. The internal drive is a WD Scorpio Blue WD20NPVT. It seems a bit taller/thicker than most 2.5" drives, so I'd think twice before trying to drop this into a laptop. Two included software programs - WD Drive Utilities & WD Security. WD Security is simple - requires a password to use the drive. The software isn't really clear if this is a type of encryption, or exactly what type of encryption, so you may want to just use OS X's built-in encryption instead. Drive Utilities gives you SMART Status, Quick Drive Test (< 2 minutes), Complete Drive Test (probably hours with a 2 TB drive), Sleep Timer to put it to sleep, Drive Erase (exact method isn't specified, and you don't get any options for overwrite method, number of passes, etc), and Registration. Overall, I am very happy with this drive and plan on using it for my OS X backups for a long time. I've never had any problems with WD drives, so I'd recommend this to others in the market as long as you're using the 1394b. If you can find a similar drive with USB 3.0 speeds and HAVE to use USB instead of Firewire, then I'd suggest exploring all of your options.

4 out of 5 eggsCross Platform Mac / PC portable HDD nice!

This review is from: WD My Passport Studio 2TB 2.5" USB 2.0 / Firewire800 Portable Hard Drive Model WDBS8P0020BBK-NESN

Pros: I reviewed the 500GB My passport and found it to be a great little external drive that made working between my Mac and PC pretty easy. I was able to transfer files between the two platforms and it was fairly quick with the firewire 800 connection on the Mac.

The 2TB version is a whole lot more of the same. 2 TB seems to be the threshold right now for being reliable as I have recently owned larger drives that did not last. Having owned Western Digital drives and many other brands in the past, almost all that I have had over 2TB eventually failed. Some smaller drives I have owned are still running even after 15 years.

I really like the My Passport Studio drives and the 2 TB drive is the same size physically as the 500 GB drive.
The available space on the 2tb drive is actually 1.85TB. You can use this drive as a cross platform drive by formatting it to be FAT32 or by using Macdrive program that allows your PC to read Mac files. I prefer to use the Macdrive as it allows unlimited file sizes to be read and used.

The drive comes with both a USB2 cable and a firewire 800 cable. With the Firewire 800 connection on the Mac, files are quickly accessed and the drive is almost as fast as my usb3 drives. With the USB2 connection, speed is painfully slow. But if you are using this drive as a mainly Mac drive, it is one sweet little big drive.

Cons: The cables are really short. Could be longer. The LED light is made so it makes a pattern like a flashlight on the wall. Easily fixed with a bit of black electrical tape. USB2 is so slooooowwwwww.......I am used to faster connections and USB3 is now the standard.
This drive is perfect for those who have older systems that don't have USB3. Anyone with USB3 connections would be well advised to get a USB3 My Passport drive. Or if you don't care about access speed on a PC, then this is the drive you should get.

Other Thoughts: I really like the size and build quality of the My Passport Studio drives. They are really built strong and look like they can take some abuse if you are using it to transfer files and will be carrying it around. Since I own both a MAc and PC, the cross platform ability is a big plus for this kind of drive. This drive can be re-formatted for use on a PC only if needed.
