1 out of 5 eggsItem DOA

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: None

Cons: Item was DOA, initiated RMA to Newegg. Shame to be required to pay return shipping on a defective drive when shipping was free to start with. This is second returned drive out of six purchased over time.

Other Thoughts: Maybe time to move on.

5 out of 5 eggsIt's a HDD

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: Using two of these in a RAID 0 array (soon to be RAID 6) for a media server, very comfortable with plugging and forgetting these drives for a few years

Cons: Higher price than other 3TB drives, but you get what ya pay for, the extra $40 is worth not having to pull my hair out in a few years after I learn that both drives failed during a RAID rebuild.

5 out of 5 eggsBest out there

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: Pricing is decent. Drive is quiet and reliable. Haven had a WD failure in as long as I can remember.

Cons: Of the 5 I've ordered so far, 1 was DOA. This is to be understood, and much preferred to a later failure. Newegg replaced it and I haven't had any problems.

Other Thoughts: I have a home server that I originally built a little over 2 years ago with 7 Seagate 3 TB hard drives. I used to only use WD drives, but the price of the Seagate was unbeatable. Unfortunately, those Seagates failed at a rate of about 4 a year. I was replacing them under warranty as it happened, but now that the warranty is gone on them, I'm replacing them with these WD drives. Not a single issue running them so far.

TLDR version: Buy these, they are far more reliable than Seagate.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat for FreeNAS

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: These drives are universally recommended for FreeNAS on the forums. I had first started my foray into FreeNAS in 2011 and had bought a slew of Hitachi Desktar drives (great units!), but they aren't available anymore.

FreeNAS will have no problems with drives from different manufacturers (as long as they're the same capacity, if you want to use the full drive's capacity - otherwise, all drives will be seen as the same capacity as the smallest drive in the array), so this particular unit is in my backup FreeNAS box (I have a FreeNAS server, and a FreeNAS backup box - both separate computers, both 6 X 3TB in RAIDZ2) with Hitachi drives. no issues whatsoever.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: A bit of an amplification on something I glossed over above : FYI (because I didn't know this when I built my own servers), some actually consider it good practice to have a certain reasonable mix of drive brands and/or models (same capacity, as previously mentioned) for the simple reason that it lessens one's risk of exposure to a bad batch of drives. I liked the reasoning, though I'd pass it on.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat NAS Drives

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: Just added two of these w/ NASware 3.0 to Synology+. These WD Red 3/2015 S/N ...68AX9N0 don't seem to have any LCC issue in primary bays of this NAS. Moved two 2013 WD30EFRX to expansion unit after years of flawless operation. Cooler and quieter than (3TB) WD Red Pro line.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: Newegg customer for many years, have always been happy with service/ RMAs.

1 out of 5 eggsStay away from these drives

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: 2 of the 3 drives are still working, for now.

Cons: I bought 3 of these drives in November 2014 and added them to a NAS in December of 2014. The NAS gets very light usage and is mostly used for a security camera that records, on average, a few times an hour (about 1 minute or less of highly compressed 1080p video per hour). One of the drives died at the end of March 2015. I used WD's Warranty Check page and entered the SN of the failed drive and it showed that the drive was under warranty until 10/2017 which is almost right as it should be under warranty until 11/2017. I attempted to create an RMA on the WD Support Portal and it refused to take the SN saying that it was not under warranty. I then tried to call the WD Red 24/7 Support number (855-559-3733) and it just rings really fast a few times and then gives a message "Your call cannot be completed at this time. Please try your call again later." I've tried calling this number many times throughout the day and constantly get that same message. I sent an email to WD Support and am now waiting to see what happens.

Other Thoughts: I should have listened to the other reviews when I purchased these drives. Normally I would never purchase drives with this low of a rating and the one time I did I got bit. If you're thinking about buying one of these drives please do yourself a favor and take heed of all these negative reviews. Because of the trouble I'm having to go through getting this replaced I will definitely never buy a WD drive again. I've been building my own PC's since the 80's and I've only had one other HD fail on me in all that time and it also happened to be a WD (about 10 years ago).

5 out of 5 eggsBuying in bulk is always better

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: 3TB x 10 Drives
===I picked these up to run in a raid 6 setup on an LSI card. All 10 arrived and are working flawlessly. No bad sectors no nothing on the new drives. All 10 showed up working.

Cons: Tricky ordering in bulk.

I picked up 2 3x combos and a 2x combo to get all 10 in one order. This saved me over $100 for the order.

Other Thoughts: I need a few more.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat NAS Drives.

This review is from: Western Digital Red NAS Hard Drive WD30EFRX 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Hard Drive

Pros: Performance
Reliability

Cons: Price

Other Thoughts: I have used these drives in 3 different Nas devices for the past 4 years. They have performed flawlessly. not one problem with them. probably the best drives for NAS storage devices. I have seen some people use these in pc's ...dont use these for pc's they are designed to run in NAS devices not pc's use the wd black or blue drives for pc's!
