4 out of 5 eggs7200 vs.5400 RPM

This review is from: WD Green WD40EZRX 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - Bulk Bare Drive

Pros: Western Digital, Good price, 4-Tb.

Cons: 5400 RPM.
If you watch the videos WD makes a major push for why you don't really need a 7200 RPM drive. What they say about data throughput is correct, and the amount of data being transferred through each revolution is also correct.

BUT! What they don't say is that even with a higher throughput, the difference between 5400 and 7200 RPMs makes a difference, especially with large file such as movies. There is a lag.

Other Thoughts: Don't expect to get 4-Tb out of the drive. Using the standard window formatting, expect to lose approx. 40-Gb in overhead with a 4096 sector and cluster size.

5 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: WD Green WD40EZRX 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - Bulk Bare Drive

Pros: Great drive and speed for such a large drive. Price (got mine on sale though)

Cons: None as of yet, had this drive for just barely over a year

Other Thoughts: Was never really interested in any personal computer drives larger than 2TB due to issues with friends having failed drives on the larger ones, never seemed to have any problem with 2TB or less drives. This hasn't had any issues at all

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect for storage space

This review is from: WD Green WD40EZRX 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - Bulk Bare Drive

Pros: Cheap storage capacity. Quite.

Cons: Not super fast, but works for passive storage so not a huge Con for me. It took me a while to figure out to get Win7 to use the full 4TB partition as it was originally only allowing me to use 1.6TB.

Other Thoughts: Turns out I had to update my Gigabyte BIOS in order for the full partition to be used as GPT.

4 out of 5 eggsVery good drive for the price

This review is from: WD Green WD40EZRX 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - Bulk Bare Drive

Pros: Price, price/size ratio, my first ever 4 tb drive

Cons: 8 second head parking

Other Thoughts: I know this sounds really geeky, but to extend the life of this drive you need to adjust the head parking settings. Every 8 seconds by default will wear things out in a hurry. In contrast, the Blacks do not head park. Change the settings to greatly extend the time between head parks and you should add years to the life of this drive

4 out of 5 eggsGood Drive, But Needs a Few Settings Tweaked

This review is from: WD Green WD40EZRX 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - Bulk Bare Drive

Pros: Quick, Quiet, Cheap, Always Works

Cons: Intelli-Power defaults to an 8 second Head Parking and this can drastically decrease the life of your drive....but I will explain how to fix this below!

Other Thoughts: Okay so I have had this drive for about a week so far, great drive, but there are a few CRUCIAL flaws it has, and everybody that wants to preserve the life of their drive MUST follow the first step.

Due to IntelliPower, the drive comes defaulted with a setting in the Firmware that sets the Head Parking to 8 seconds. I don't know what WD was thinking when they did this other than to save a few watts per hour, but this can have devastating effects on the over-all health of your drive, as it will cause you to rack up Load Cycle Counts (LCCs) like crazy.

To change this, you will need to create a bootable CD or USB loaded with a program called "FreeDos"

Once you do that, do a search on the WD website and find a program called "wdidle3.exe"

Note: WD does not officially list this as a program compatible with the 4TB green drive, but there are numerous accounts on the internet of it working with them as well as it working fine with mine.

Anyway, once you get wdidle3.exe on your FreeDos bootable medium, you will reboot your PC to that medium. Make sure that your drive is the ONLY DRIVE CONNECTED TO YOUR PC because the commands will work in bulk, as you cannot specify what drive you want to change the settings on.

Now, once you get FreeDos loaded, you will be looking at a plain command prompt. I read somewhere that completely disabling head-parking can cause problems with the 4TB drives, so I set mine to 300 seconds (that is the max) just to avoid future complications....(but I also read that you can disable it as long as you completely cut power to your drive before you try to use it after changing the settings....try it at your own risk)

But for liability reasons, we will do 300

So type this into your CMD - "wdidle3.exe /s300"

Your head parking will now be set to 5 minutes, and the life of your drive will drastically increase (but you will sacrifice a little bit of energy saving, which I personally believe is a fair trade-off)

One last thought, there is another setting on the drive that currently CANNOT be changed. Due to IntelliPower, your drive will automatically shut down after 15 mins of inactivity. There is a hacky fix for this (hopefully there will be an official fix in the future) but what you can do is download a program called "NoSleepHD"

What it does is let you select a drive and it will write a tiny text file to it at a time interval you specify so that your drive stays awake. I set mine to 4 mins so that my head doesn't park, but you could set it to 14 mins just to keep your drive awake.

Besides for all that, awesome drive, works great. I'll probably be getting a WD Red next time but thats my fault for not looking into the details of the Green Drive before I bought it.

Hope this helps someone, so they don't have to spend 2 days scanning the web for answers like I did xD

1 out of 5 eggsBad Drive Batch?

This review is from: WD Green WD40EZRX 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - Bulk Bare Drive

Pros: - lots of space

Cons: - failing
- unable to use

Other Thoughts: I ordered 2 of these drives for a new PC build... very dissappointed. one was DOA and I RMA'd it on Day #1. Now, I'm on day #3 and have been moving media over to the remaining drive. It is 90% full and throwing error messages at me.
It has yet to fail, but errors after such little use is very frustrating. debating sending this one back as well and going with Seagate..... shame, really, I've bought WD drives exclusively for the past 10 years.

1 out of 5 eggsUnfortunately DOA

This review is from: WD Green WD40EZRX 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - Bulk Bare Drive

Pros: Will report when replacement working drive is received.

Cons: First drive DOA

Other Thoughts: Using Windows 8.1. Configured as GPT filesystem (and verified this in disk manager). On format as NTFS (the only option), the format fails after about one minute with a hardware I/O error. The format was tried on two different computers, with three different SATA channels, including installing internally to the PC on the motherboard SATA connector. The BIOS was checked. It is seen in Windows but is unformatted. BTW, I have a 3TB drive that successfully works, so I know how to configure a larger than 2.2TB drive.

1 out of 5 eggsJust can't keep it running

This review is from: WD Green WD40EZRX 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - Bulk Bare Drive

Pros: None as of this writing

Cons: Just can't keep this thing running. Even partitioned to stay below the 2.2T old limits and running Win 7 x64 Ultimate, ich10r chipset with updated drivers, the drive drops data, loses it's file system and becomes unreadable. I am just flat disappointed and am having to install some smaller and much older drives to keep me working. Trouble is, it passes the DataLifeguard quick test, but I haven't had the time to run the long test.

Other Thoughts: I had been under the impression that there was something wrong with my motherboard up until now. But other drives run perfectly with the same slot, sata connection and wires. HMMM ? I will have to assume it's the drive now since I have exhausted nearly every possibility. I hate to return it though since I have waited past the 30 days for a new replacement and will be stuck with a refurb. Bummer..
