5 out of 5 eggsDesign to fail but you can fix that

This review is from: WD Green WD40EZRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - Bulk Bare Drive

Pros: Quiet, affordable, can be reliable if you disable the self destruct feature, essentially the same drive as the red except missing one not so important feature

Cons: this drive will eat itself alive in certain situations if you do not run a program that changes how often it parks it's heads.

Other Thoughts: this drive has a feature that parks the heads after 7-8 seconds of inactivity. It can only handle 200k-600k parks and is rated at 300k. You can easily rack up thousands of parks a day. There are people who hit 600k in a few months. There are people who rack up 10k in 3 years. Depends on how it's used.

Parking the heads saves .7w so if you have 10 drives that's like a 70w bulb.

The Reds parks there heads as well... After several minutes. Saving the .7w when not in use.

Lastly if using these in a server make sure it's a software raid server like freeNas w/ zfs. If you use any expensive raid controllers flash them to be in IT pass-through mode. Reason is some of those controllers will drop the drive if the drive finds a bad sector and try's to repair itself.

Most people they don't know if they are using hardware or software raid are using software.

WDIDLE3.exe is the program you get from WD to change when the drive parks it's heads. Just set it to never or 5 minutes or so.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent 2ndary storage

This review is from: WD Green WD40EZRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - Bulk Bare Drive

Pros: Large capacity, quiet and just works. No perceived difference in performance over the 2 tb 7200 rpm it replaced.

Cons: None to speak of in my application.

Other Thoughts: My system has a Samsung 850 pro SSD (500gb) for primary storage and uses this drive for 2ndary storage (large data) and backup.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat parity drive in UnRAID

This review is from: WD Green WD40EZRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - Bulk Bare Drive

Pros: Replaced a 500GB drive and moved a 3TB parity drive into the 500gb drive slot and put this 4TB drive in the parity slot. Array rebuild was relatively quick and this drive performs like a dream. Just waiting for another sale so I can replace all my 1-2TB drives with these.

Cons: No issues.

4 out of 5 eggsWhen they work, they work

This review is from: WD Green WD40EZRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - Bulk Bare Drive

Pros: Big space, reasonable price, 6g/s

Cons: 2 out of 6 DOA

Other Thoughts: These are fine drives. I ordered 6 and 4 were DOA so ... bad batch?

The ones that worked, well, they worked and what more can you really say about a consumer grade hard drive?

1 out of 5 eggsSecond Drive Failure

This review is from: WD Green WD40EZRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - Bulk Bare Drive

Pros: Large Storage Capacity, SATA 3.0 Interface

Cons: Short Life Span

Other Thoughts: I first bought this drive last fall, and made the mistake of not performing a burn in test. After moving 2 TB of my data over to it, it crashed. Newegg replaced the hard drive with the same model. After only running for 54 hours via S.M.A.R.T info it already had meat the threshold for bad/reallocated sectors that now I am getting disk failure messages constantly. It should be noted that this drive is in an well ventilated case with 7 other disk of varying age. I have purchased and swapped hard drives many times over the years and this is my first real consistent case of repeat failure. I will be contacting WD Support for replacement as it is past the 30 day window. However if purchasing be sure to validate the drive upon arrival.

4 out of 5 eggsWaiting to know for sure.

This review is from: WD Green WD40EZRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - Bulk Bare Drive

Pros: Caught these drives on sale, I ordered two of them to backup media files.

Decent price for a lot of space. Even for a "green" drive the performance wasn't bad, surface tests averaged about 100MB/sec for most of the testing. Faster than I expect out of a low power drive.

Cons: Upon receipt of the drives I did a DBAN run to ensure they were working properly.

One failed about three hours in and wouldn't POST on any computer after than. The other passed and seems to be working properly.

Other Thoughts: I've seen many people complain about drives being DOA, I've order dozens and never gotten a bad one. Packaging was good and not damaged in any way. Drive must have just been a dud, I do not blame Newegg in any way for this.

Replacement should be on the way, I will run surface scans for a few days when it gets here to ensure it is working properly before putting it in to use.

1 out of 5 eggsIts junk

This review is from: WD Green WD40EZRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - Bulk Bare Drive

Pros: It makes a great paper weight

Cons: First was DOA. Spent an extra $15 to get another, second was DOA after one day.

Other Thoughts: Been a WD customer for over a decade, not no more!

2 out of 5 eggsExpected A Lot More

This review is from: WD Green WD40EZRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - Bulk Bare Drive

Pros: Reputable manufacturer.
Highest amount of storage for the lowest price as of the day I'm writing this review.
Green drives are very quiet, and despite what some people think, can be quite sturdy and reliable.

Cons: DOA (Defective On Arrival). Allow me to explain what I mean. The drive did work for a few hours, but disappears from Windows altogether at seemingly random intervals. I was able to copy files to it and run a benchmark on it.

This means that this particular drive I received, along with many other defective drives of this same model, are capable of passing a benchmarking test at the factory as if they are fully working, but were actually defective. WD may want to do a silent recall and double check this model.

As another reviewer said, a defective drive adds about ten seconds to boot times since the motherboard knows something is plugged in but can't recognize the device. This usually only happens to old hard drives that are about to die.

Other Thoughts: Some people are getting functional drives, some people like me are getting the defective ones. Be wary of buying this particular model. I've got a lot of faith in WD and I won't think twice about buying from them again. Just have to be a bit more careful about which drives I get from them.

This review is from: WD Green WD40EZRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - Bulk Bare Drive

Pros: Quiet spin up, they seem to idle down and wake up appropriately. Good transfer speeds in my NAS configured for RAID 1.

Cons: None.

3 out of 5 eggsCheap... Unreliable

This review is from: WD Green WD40EZRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - Bulk Bare Drive

Pros: Cheap large storage... Runs cooler than regular drive..

Cons: Purchased two of these together... After one and a half years, one of the drives is failing...

Other Thoughts: Prior to purchasing these, I ran two 2 TB WD Green drives for over three years without issues. I ignored the negative reviews about this drive based on my prior experience, and now I'm kicking myself for it.

If you value your data, do yourself a favor and don't purchase these.
