5 out of 5 eggsGreat experiance again !

Pros: Well, i decide to purchase another NAS made by WD based on my personal experience with My Book Live that I bought about 2,5 years ago. By the way, My book live works flawlessly since day one I got it . Period. For those that think they bought Google server are greatly mistaken. This little server works perfectly in the home environment. There is enough of horsepower to stream simultaneously decent HD quality movies to 2-3 devices without any hiccups. Period. All you have to do is get decent AC router and use provided network cable to connect it. I do not use any extra WD software on my PC , because simply there is no need. Just go to my network settings In Win 7 ( in my case) and create shortcut to the drive on the desktop. In my case, it always works 100% to get to the files I need. This includes both NAS drives I have at home. When it comes to remote access to the drives ( outside my home network ) It seems to me that service provided by WD is definitely sufficient for the money that I invested into the home storage. Once again if you need greater DL/UL speeds pay $$$ for pro cloud service. Period. There is also a way to tweak these drives with getting alternative firmware. However I have no intention to improve the performance simply just because I do not think there is need to do that. Keep good work WD !

Cons: I put about 2 TB of data on the new NAS . It took about 16 hrs to do that ( not bed at all ) My concern is that thanks to relatively slow CPU and 256 megs of RAM it takes a long time for that little baby to index all the data stored on the new drive which means the drive stays on for most of the time. However I noticed that the drive tends to go to sleep mode more often then in the first few days after the purchase. My guess is it will take additional couple of weeks for the HDD to go to sleep mode on a daily basis. Anyway that was the case with My Book Live that I have.

Other Thoughts: Do not be fooled by many negative reviews. Buy it !

1 out of 5 eggsRUN, don't walk, RUUUUN!!!

Pros: There's a 4TB hard drive inside. Maybe you can remove it, reformat it, and stick it in a proper NAS that works.

Cons: Pretty much everything. It's almost hard to pick something to begin with.
- Absolutely pathetic transfer speeds due to a lack of Gigabit Ethernet.
- Absolutely pathetic transfer speeds over USB (what they actually suggest you do for large files).
- The desktop app forgets the IP of the NAS even if you set it to a static IP.
- Usage for each shares shows as 0KB even when the drive is almost completely full.
- Disconnects for no reason at all.
- Cannot for the life of me get the web-UI to work unless I first hard reset the NAS. After that it takes about 10 minutes for it to figure out it's a NAS again.
- Once you finally get the web-ui to load, it takes FOREVER to do anything. I just now clicked on a help link and it took 15 seconds to pull it up... and it's just text.

Other Thoughts: I can't remember the last time I gave something 1 egg. This product is THAT bad. If I had known then what I know now, I would have just saved the money for a Synology or Drobo. They are well worth the extra cost. If you're tech savvy, maybe FreeNAS would be an even better option. Either way, even the most novice of user would be better served by something... anything... else.

Manufacturer Response:

Greetings Ryan,
We thank you for your feedback you have provided to us on your experience with the My Cloud.
The My Cloud is provided to you with a Gigabit connection, but when trying to take full advantage of this connection it is important that you are also using a Gigabit interface with your computer and on your router via Ethernet. The following link has some suggestions and best practices to optimize performance with the My Cloud and your connected devices.
“When transferring large files to or from a WD NAS device, performance may be slower than expected”:

Please ensure you are running the latest firmware version on the My Cloud to provide optimal compatibility and availability of the provided features in OS 3.
“How to upgrade a My Cloud device to My Cloud OS 3”:

Typically, the Desktop App is used for accessing the drive remotely, and given your current concerns we advise mapping to the drive directly on your computer through your Operating System’s File Explorer.
“How to map a My Cloud or NAS device on a Windows PC”:
“How to map a WD network drive on a Mac”:

In place of using the desktop App, for remote access we provide the use of Web Files through a browser coupled with WD Sync for keeping the files on your computer synced with the My Cloud automatically.
“How to access a My Cloud device through Web Files”:
“How to use WD Sync to sync data with a My Cloud storage device”:

4 out of 5 eggsUse the right tool for the job

Pros: easy to setup and get going.

Cons: Kind of slow, gets warm. It does lockup occasionally. Removed an egg for locking-up (that's not good WD).
USB port works, but causes lockups if using an external HDD (for me anyway). Probably better suited for a flash drive.

Other Thoughts: At first i got this device i hated it. it was to slow to transfer large files, do large backups quickly, or even use the dashboard efficiently.

But then i stopped using it as a NAS. While technically speaking it IS a NAS, it's not a great one. it will work for doing photo backups, and moving the occasional file to it, but not as a dedicated NAS for even 5+ people

This is more for backing up your days photos off your phone, or using another PC or smart TV to view the occasional video. also if you think to yourself "hey i might need this file at work today, but i can't find my phone cable". Drop the file in here and it'll be there waiting in the "cloud" for you when you get to work and you DO need it.

If you are looking to stream movies, or backup large amounts of data, DO NOT BUY THIS. You can EASILY build a home NAS 100X better than this with stuff you might already have.

A $40 PC off of craigslist (Or one of your old ones. does NOT need be high-end. a 2.4Ghz, 512MB RAM, 10/100 LAN will work great), a couple 2TB hard drives (2x WD RED for $180. Doesn't need to be WD, but i'm being nice here) and FreeNAS (Linux OS made to be dedicated NAS). Its really easy to setup. Lots of easy to follow, straight to the point guides online on how to do it.

I work in IT, i have my own home server with 2x quad core Xeon processors, 32GB RAM, and 20TB+ of disk space, I know how this should work (and i lowered my expectations A LOT).

This does get about 100 MB/s (good), transfer for files 500MB+ dwindles to a max of 20MB/s (expected), Does get hot, like 109*F just at idle (bad), does lock-up (bad), is easy to access from outside your house (good), seems reasonably secure (also good).

Use this as a link between your home and your phone, For that it works great. DO not use as a home media server, It's simply not powerful enough.

I am using Firmware 2.11.113 (just because)

2 out of 5 eggsPoor Engineering

Pros: It's relatively simple to setup with the web interface. The hard drive itself has lasted (but read below... not so fortunate with the chassis).

Cons: The unit began overheating (hot to touch). It remains powered on, but becomes inaccessible. A complete power-down/reboot works as long as you let it cool for a bit. It only lasts about 5-10 minutes before having to repeat this cycle. Of course, this started happening right after the warranty expired.

Other Thoughts: I've owned alot of great WD products in professional and personal capacities. This is not one of them. I purchased it to use as a backup system, primarily so I wouldn't have to build my own. It has proven to be completely unreliable and more of a struggle than building my own NAS.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello There Corey B.
Thanks for bringing this unexpected concern to our attention. It is not normal behavior for this drive to run hot to the touch as the My Cloud drive is designed to stand like a book in a well ventilated location and relies on convection cooling. If the dashboard is accessible, it is recommended running the diagnostic utility located within Utilities from the Settings Icon.

We understand you mentioned the drive is out of warranty, however we would be more than happy to provide assistance with further diagnostics to determine the cause of this unexpected behavior and provide a solution. Please contact us directly by phone or Email below and be sure to mention this Newegg review for reference or request automatic support from the Help “?” icon from the drive’s dashboard.

3 out of 5 eggsNo data integrity issues, but flaky connections

Pros: I've had the NAS for almost 2 years and it has been keeping our data secure.

Cons: The drive often disappears from the directories for no reason and will reappear shortly after that. This process is really annoying if you are in the middle of a large backup or similar. It crashes you out of the process and you have to start over. WD doesn't even acknowledge the issue and non of the forums have found a solution for the problem.

Other Thoughts: Wouldn't buy a NAS from them again.

Manufacturer Response:

Greetings Andreas,
It is unfortunate to learn about the intermittent connectivity concerns with the My Cloud in your environment, and we thank you for bringing them to our attention.
Our My Cloud Product Line recently received a firmware release that applies OS 3, with new features, functionality, and user interface. Please visit the following link on how to update your drive to the current firmware version.
“How to upgrade a My Cloud device to My Cloud OS 3”:

If assigning a Static IP to the My Cloud is not something you have tried in your troubleshooting, we advise doing this in the event a DHCP release and renewal request is being required by the router and resetting the connection with your connected devices.
“How to configure a My Cloud or My Cloud EX4 drive with a Static IP”:

We would like the chance to follow-up on your review and the results from our suggestions above to confirm the drive is working as intended in your environment, and assist as necessary with the concern at hand. You can reach our My Cloud Support directly via email or phone below and mention your Newegg review.

1 out of 5 eggsNot working for me

Pros: None, the unit was DOA. Newegg refunded the full amount.

Cons: Unit was DOA. I didn't bother to order another one based on other reviews.

Other Thoughts: If the product worked, I would have had a more positive experience.

Manufacturer Response:

3 out of 5 eggsWD replacement also bad.

Pros: When it was working, I was happy with it.
Big storage for the money. Quiet. Reasonably fast.

Cons: When it broke, it took a week to get a replacement shipped, and shipping took another week.
The replacement was DOA, and getting another replacement overnight has taken hours of my time on the phone.

Other Thoughts: I've been loyal to WD for years. Not so much anymore.

Manufacturer Response:

3 out of 5 eggsMy Cloud - My Complaint

Pros: setup very easy & intuitive. about as easy as plug & play can get. at least to get started. I'm just scratching the surface of what this cloud drive can do. will add to update after the learning curve is over, why i can only give 3 eggs at the moment.

Cons: unable to do a system image using WIN 7, main reason why i got this. is there a way to do this? per documentation you need WIN 7 professional to do this. looking for alternate software to perform system image to My Cloud, if its out there. if i can't do system image will probably drop another egg or 2.

Other Thoughts: first file, picture, video backups did take some time, had to let it run over night, i think this is mainly due to my router limitations. will try to provide updates as i get over the initial learning curve.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello jim,
Thanks for your feedback regarding you initial drive setup and backup or image backup concerns. We have an article to assist with initial drive setup of your My Cloud and a link to our online learning center to provide more information below.

1 out of 5 eggs*** UNRELIABLE ***

Pros: Easy to install, affordable and a simple NAS solution.

*** Back Story / System Set Up to describe the CONS ***
I have two 4TB MyCloud NAS on my network to serve up media files to my 3 WD Media Players connected to TV's. I purchased the first NAS 1 1/2 years ago and the second about 1 year ago, so I have had quite a bit of time of time and experience with these systems.

My setup is simple, DHCP on both, automatic firmware updates and neither is accessed remotely, only used on the home / internal network.

Cons: One of my NAS works fine, no issues... My second NAS (purchased 1 1/2 years ago) disconnects from the network every 2 to 3 days.

I check the firmware regularly and it is always up to date. I have replaced the network cable 3 times (Cat 5, Cat 5e and finally Cat 6), yet the NAS still disconnects every couple of days.

I'll disconnect the power, let it sit for a few minutes, then reconnect. Up until recently, this normally resolves the problem, but still very annoying.

In recent weeks, disconnecting the power won't reboot the NAS (blue ready light), rather is a solid white light, and unable to access the drive.

Each reset is taking longer, whereby disconnecting the network cable, pressing the reset button for about 50 seconds on the back of the NAS, then letting it reboot, finally reconnecting the network cable. It would take approx. 5 minutes before it was online, then its 10 min, and now up to 15+ min before its online.

I expect the drive to completely fail in the coming weeks, which I'm now shopping for a back up drive (NOT WD).

Additional comments:
* The NAS that works fine, will go in to idle status when its supposed to and conserve energy. The NAS that disconnects regularly, rarely goes to an idle status, spools up and clicks away for hours (as if indexing) when no one is using it / accessing it.

*WD's online user guide (PDF) references most trouble shooting on pages 109 & 110. Has anyone noticed that the guide is missing pages 106 to 115, MOST of the trouble shooting section???

Other Thoughts: I was looking for a simple, no fuss NAS solution so my family could watch videos and access data when they want. After spending $500.00 on two WD 4TB MyCloud NAS drives, I now find myself shopping for a replacement set up. I wish I would have saved my money and spent a bit more for a better NAS solution.

I expect one drive to completely fail in the near future and who knows about the second one. Based on my experience, you have a 50/50 shot at getting a reliable / working NAS drive from WD.

Manufacturer Response:

Greetings Patrick,
Thank you for bringing your concerns to our attention with this review of the My Cloud drive.
To test and determine the integrity of your My Cloud’s hardware and software, we recommend running a diagnostics on the drive as well as performing a System Restore of the OS.
“How to run a System Diagnostics test on a WD My Cloud, Mirror, EX2, or EX4 Personal Cloud drive”:
“How to restore a WD My Cloud, Mirror, EX2, or EX4 Personal Cloud drive to factory default settings”:

Once you have done this we recommend assigning a Static IP to the My Cloud in question, which will typically resolve concerns relating to loss of connectivity caused by a miscommunication between the router and drive in your environment.
“How to configure a WD My Cloud or WD My Cloud EX4 Personal Cloud drive with a Static IP”:

We will look into the concern with the user manual for the My Cloud and address the information as necessary, as this type of feedback is very helpful to us in improving the customer experience.
Please allow us the opportunity to assist you with your drive and experience directly so we are able to provide you with a replacement under warranty, if the above suggestions uncover a hardware issue or a software concern with the drive. You can reach us by email or phone below and mention this Newegg review with our team.
