5 out of 5 eggsGreat router for a great price

Pros: Fast -- 1Gpps for 64k packets
PoE -- you can power an UniFi access point.
Powerful -- you get both GUI and CLI access

Cons: Takes a bit to configure, but is worth the time invested.

5 out of 5 eggsUpdate Firmware - then typical setup is easy

Pros: PoE at 24/48v on three ports is convenient, saves using 3 injectors.
Router setup is straightforward, if you load latest firmware and use Wizards.

Cons: Seems to run a bit hot.

2 out of 5 eggsdesign defect

Pros: Seems like a nice router, especially the 2-voltage POE feature.

Cons: When supplied at 48 volts (with the enclosed 48 volt power supply) something inside the unit overheats (by the odor it gives off) and causes eth0 to drop the connection. It worked OK for hours at 24 volts, so the problem is clearly the internal 48/24 converter.

Other Thoughts: I did get a refund of the purchase price, but no replacement unit was available. I wonder if they have pulled all these off the market? Originally Ubiquiti were sending them out with only 24 volt adapters.

4 out of 5 eggs(Almost) exactly what I was looking for

Pros: I was already familiar with the Ubiquiti Edge Lite and it's performance and was looking for a device to flex a little more muscle when I need to drop a quick router and access points into a meeting venue. I selected the ERPOE-5 since it had built-in POE on 4 ports. Needless to say, this little device has worked like a charm. I haven't fully load tested it yet, but I've had it handle traffic from my 3 POE APs just fine.

Cons: The new firmware has made some headway in providing GUI access to a lot of the settings, but it still feels a little clunky. This is still more complicated to set up than a standard SOHO router and that's not a bad thing. I pay for these because I know how much I can customize on them. A few clicks through Google have solved every one of my issues.
Also, I'm not sure if my use case above is intended, but it does somewhat irk me that the baseline switch functionality only spans eth2 -> eth4. I have 4 Engenius APs that I used with my old setup so I effectively cannot use the extra AP without an additional POE switch. I rarely actually need the 4th AP and I'm sure there are instructions online to get around this, but that was a factor in docking an egg as this was not well marked as a limitation. I'm sure there is a way around it as well with a few clicks on Google just as there is one for the EdgeLITE. Not a major headache.

5 out of 5 eggshome run!!

Pros: incredible functionality and capability without the pricetag of a competitor's product. Easy to confugure for the IT savy or padawon IT savy user. solid performance, stabile enviroment and elegantly well made hardware.

Cons: I wish the wizard would have allowed me to change the defaulted class C network of 192.168.1.x to a Class A network before executing the initial setup.

Other Thoughts: Great product and defininetly differentiates itself from the competition

4 out of 5 eggsinteresting

Pros: Powerful vyatta based router at low(er) cost.

Cons: Not your point and click SOHO router

Other Thoughts: This is a good product. Fairly easy to configure for basic things. The Web UI isn't as bad as some say. I was able to do everything I needed from the web ui. It's nice to know that it has the power to do a lot more if you need it. Of course, it's also great if you want to deploy Ubiquiti wireless access points.

1 out of 5 eggsUbiquiti ERPOE-5 EdgeRouter PoE Advanced 5-Port Router

Pros: none.

Cons: I have selected it because of the stellar reviews and speed. Did not work for me. This is the second unit I have to return. It's a waste of time. The unit disconnects 10 s into trying to communicate with it. After giving me a glimpse at the nifty web interface, it goes dark and displays a nice window saying - "lost connection, check your internet connection". As if it's not connected directly to the computer through a cable. Pinging returns: transmit failure. general failure.

Other Thoughts: Newegg is as usual very prompt and helpful. Newegg, I apologize for returning this.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Good solid hardware, good bandwidth, PoE, lots of configuration options, even dual WAN, nice Web GUI. Solid site-to-site VPN.

Cons: Complicated NAT, read the forums/knowledge base about how the NAT works in combination with the firewall rules and the order in which they apply to packets. PPTP is also a little hard to get working RADIUS.

OpenVPN site-to-site works well, but setup is all done via the command line which isn't hard, but is

5 out of 5 eggsUbiquiti gear

Pros: Although I purchased this unit to get a Tough Switch POE (same manufacturer) at the same time I had to review it based on all they have got. Very full featured and excellent quality, from the forums on these devices these are well respected!

Cons: Without familiarity in setting up networking equipment its slightly intimidating, though the EdgeMax software makes it a bit more friendly. I like it so much that I am learning the command line interface to become proficient at configuring all the good stuff!

Other Thoughts: I did quite a bit of research trying to find routers and switches to consider for purchase. Ubiquiti gear won hands down. The price to performance ratio can't be beat. A bit of a learning curve for me is well worth it!
