The 23" widescreen NEC MultiSync E231W is a unique blend of form and function in an ultra-slim, lightweight package that is extremely environmentally friendly and packed with features. This Full HD, eco-friendly model is highlighted by LED backlighting which allows the E231W to consume less power overall, radiate less heat, use less packaging, weigh less, utilize recycled plastics in its production and be free of hazardous materials.

More energy efficient features, like ECO Mode manual adjustments, Intelligent Power Manager (IPM), off timer and an ambient light sensor that automatically adjusts the brightness to the optimal setting, further promote energy conservation and a lower total cost of ownership. In addition, the E231W’s built-in carbon footprint meter helps track and calculate the conservation of green gas emissions. These "green" benefits, when combined with an ergonomic design, and a high-contrast screen, make the E231W an ideal choice for corporate and financial users looking for increased productivity and sleek aesthetics.

  • newegg LED Backlight Technology The NEC MultiSync E231W features an LED-backlit panel that provides for industry-leading low power consumption, improved recyclability and a design free of toxins such as mercury.
  • newegg More Green Features Ambient Light Sensor minimizes power consumption by automatically adjusting the brightness to the optimal setting depending on ambient lighting, screen content or both. Intelligent Power Manager (IPM) system and Off Timer provide innovative power-saving methods and reduce CO2 emissions by shifting to a lower power consumption level or automatically powering down when the monitor is on but not in use.
  • newegg Height-adjust, pivot, tilt and swivel capabilities The NEC MultiSync E231W features a 4-way ergonomic stand with capabilities of pivot, height-adjustment (up to 110mm), tilt and swivel, allowing you to create an ideal ergonomic display orientation for maximum viewing comfort.
  • newegg Full HD with DisplayPort The NEC MultiSync E231W has a native 1920 x 1080 resolution to display Full HD 1080p content without any loss of image quality. DisplayPort provides enhanced display connectivity and performance, making the E231W ideal for AMD Eyefinity multi-display configurations to improve productivity.
  • newegg DVM Dynamic Video Mode enhances video and images with real-time optimization of brightness, color and contrast.
  • newegg Built-in Carbon Footprint Meter The Carbon footprint meter helps track and calculate the reduction of green gas emissions via OSD and NaViSet Administrator.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat for text

Pros: I use this as a secondary monitor for my IDE text editor for web development; HTML, CSS, JS, PHP, etc... since the monitor is so tall when turned vertically. This is extremely helpful since I can see more at once without scrolling up and down constantly.

The monitor's adjustments for pivot, swivel, etc are all very easy to adjust.

Cons: I think the colors are a little off. Ive never been able to get it to look quite right but overall it looks nice for text.... maybe not for editing graphics, video, or photos though.

1 out of 5 eggsVery Poor Menu Interface

Pros: The monitor swivels and pivots as advertised.

Cons: This monitor is EXTREMELY difficult to program. After two week I am still unable to keep the monitor from entering into the ECO Modes and losing the backlight. When you turn the monitor off, it resets to factory default settings.

4 out of 5 eggsNEC E231W monitor (dec 2011)

Pros: Solid stand, move all the ways it should.
Decent picture quality

Cons: Chintzy OSD controls, monitor parameters can not be set by by NEC's "Navigate" monitor software

Other Thoughts: I wanted a monitor that rotates (pivot) for use in portrait & landscape mode. The monitor does that well: solid stand, easy to pivot and otherwise adjust. Picture quality is decent. However, as a programmer (in a dual monitor setup) my standards aren't high. I notice the picture looks washed out when viewed looking down. From straight on, or looking up, it's a lot better! Odd.

Big complaint (not just mine), is chintzy monitor (osd) controls. In particular, a toggle used for left-right selection. It was badly responsive, and then its pencil point sized rubber cover fell off! That actually helped: prodding the metal rod underneath with a pen point works clumsily.

Making it worse, the Navigate program from NEC website (easily found) that sets monitor parameters, won't NOT work with this monitor. Lots of other NEC monitors, but not this one (NEC tech support told me this). So I am stuck with the stupid OSD controls.

I don't tweak 'em much, so no big deal. But really!

4 out of 5 eggsQuality at it's best!

Pros: One of the better HD monitors. Fast response time and image quality is clear and crisp. 4 out of 5 eggs for the one con. Recommended for gamers.

Cons: The Green Features have a small glitch. When you have it set for eco 1 or 2 the monitor goes from dark to bright a few times then it stops.

Other Thoughts: buy worth the money.

4 out of 5 eggsFull ergo adjustments, DP, and LED? Yes, please!

Pros: •Bright, sharp image - No problem reproducing text, haven't detected a hint of ghosting or smearing while playing movies or games.

•One of the few LED displays with height, tilt, swivel, and rotation adjustment - Not sure why more manufacturers don't do the same. The stand is fairly solid, and it uses a VESA 100m mount if you want to change it out for something else.

•Has all the benefits of LED - My energy consumption went down 10 watts after replacing my 4 year old 22" display. Powers on in only a few seconds and doesn't require time to 'warm up' to full brightness. Not nearly as warm over long durations of time.

•DisplayPort for the win - Works well with my Mac mini and a Mini DP to DP cable. I'm glad NEC didn't cheap out and go with an HDMI connector.

•Has auto-brightness adjustment and single-button Eco-mode - If you're into that sort of thing...

Cons: •It's a TN panel - Thought I'd put any debate to bed since NEC doesn't publish this information. You can move about 30° off axis horizontally without seeing color distortion. Vertical is less than 10°. Forget color accuracy if you rotate this into portrait mode.

•Native color leans towards blue - You can adjust the other color settings to compensate, but the blue tinge never goes away completely. Mostly evident when looking at white backgrounds.

Other Thoughts: I purchased this mostly for the power savings over my older display, the ergonomic adjustability, and the DisplayPort connector. While I wish this had an IPS panel, I can't really complain since the E231w costs significantly less than 23" IPS displays that would require a few trade offs on what I consider to be more important. I purchased this for home use, not for photography or art. If you're looking for color accuracy, keep looking. If you're looking for an adjustable LED display with full adjustability and a good set of connectors, and you're willing to forego a little color accuracy, this should be in your shopping cart.

5 out of 5 eggsBest bang for the buck

Pros: Japanese products never disappoint me. I would never buy another monitor from any other company (well, except Eizo Nanao - when I can afford it). By the way, NEC stands for Nippon Electric Corporation. Nippon means Japan.

Cons: The directional adjust button (second button from the left) is a little hard to use, but fortunately you hardly ever use it.

There is no HDMI port, which I think is more convenient than DVI.

The monitor cannot detect any DVI signal from my MSI Cyclone 6850. Maybe this graphics card is DOA. I ordered a Cyclone GTX 460 and hopefully this one will work....

4 out of 5 eggsVery nice monitor

Pros: This thing is fully adjustable and has great picture quality
Lots of options and a very easy to use menu

Cons: Did not come with a displayport cable... For the price it could have least come wit ha cable. lost an egg for that

The thing is crooked!!! 2 monitors from 2 different companies both leaning to the right and no my dang desk is level....

more flimsy than my sansung but it does have a much larger display

Other Thoughts: You can get this a lot cheaper elsewhere but not with NewwEggs awesome guarantees and reliable return services,

No display port cable on a 200+ monitor was a real bummer.

Pros: - Height adjustable (from very low to very high)
- Swivel screen (landscape and portrait)
- LED backlit
- DV-I input
- Sincere design and no-gimmick looks

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I use the portrait feature all the time (for PowerPoint).
Now I can see 3 times as much :)

5 out of 5 eggsNEC goodness, but not greatness

Pros: Displayport. Some type of IPS (not clearly described). Excellent range of PHST adjustments. Captive-screw base attachment. Probably the best value for an NEC panel.

Cons: Not really a con... since the spec says no HDMI, but no HDMI. IMO Displayport more than compensates for no HDMI.

Other Thoughts: This NEC 23" is a large step, a leap even, above the humdrum TN panels that cost a Franklin less.
