4 out of 5 eggsGood Headphones, Although A Bit Overpriced

This review is from: MTX StreetAudio iX1 On-Ear Acoustic Monitor Headphones - Red

Pros: My first impression of these headphones was pretty good. I put them on, and they fit my head nicely. They come with a nice case. I listened to a few bass test tracks, and the headphones performed and delivered better bass response than I anticipated.

They are not nearly as bright red as they appear in the pictures. I thought they would be obnoxiously red, but in person they are a nice deep shade of red which is pretty stylish.

Although these are not “noise cancelling headphones”, they do a very good job of inhibiting the noise around you. This is easily the first pair of non-noise-cancelling headphones I’ve owned where you can barely hear someone talk next to you just because you have them on. With music playing, you can’t really hear anything around you.

I have a fairly large head and sometimes have trouble with headphones not fitting me comfortably. I have these headphones adjusted all the way out, but they do fit over my head nicely.

I also really like that these headphones have an interchangeable cord. What I mean by this is the headphone cord is just a 3.5mm audio cable on both sides. Not only that, but you can plug it into the left or the right ear cup. This is a very unique feature I have not seen before, and I like it because it makes the headphones very dynamic for any setup, where you might want to move the cables.

Cons: The included audio cable is very short, but since you can technically use any 3.5mm audio cable you want, this is easy to fix if the cable isn’t long enough for your setup.

While the bass response from these headphones is great, the treble response is a bit lacking. I feel like songs I’m listening to are artificially deep and missing some of the higher notes.

Although the headband is fairly comfortable for me, the ear cups aren’t. After an hour or two of wearing these, my ears start to hurt. I’m not sure if it’s because the headphones are a little too tight around the head, or if it’s the size of the ear cups. I’m used to headphones where my entire ear is inside the cup, and with these headphones the cup is around the edges of my ear.

Other Thoughts: These headphones are NOT bad for what they are. If you’re used to earbuds or cheap headphones, these will knock your socks off. However, I’ve been using a nice set of headphones I bought a year ago for about half of this price, and I think they sound better and are more comfortable.

These headphones are nice but I don’t know if they’re worth the price. Better headphones can be found for cheaper.

5 out of 5 eggsLook no further these are the best.

This review is from: MTX StreetAudio iX1 On-Ear Acoustic Monitor Headphones - Red

Pros: Sound quality of these headphones are unrivaled. The bass is thumping and superb at any volume level.
The fit and comfort allowed me to wear for 4 hour listening with no ear wear. They are so light and comfortable you forget they are on your ears.I love the left or right side audio line cord ,you can use either side for more comfort or even daisy chain to another headphone wearer. And yes they really are non tangle.
The color is pastel red and looks really good .
Included and beautifully packaged in a
very handsome case

Cons: I am not an apple device user so the included 2nd audio cord is of no use to me.Also while the included audio cord is removeable and tangle free ,it is on the short side.Being old school i still miss my 25ft heavy coiled headphone cord but you just do not see these anymore.

Other Thoughts: My son has a high end Audio-Technica AD700X ,side by side the MTX just blows the Audio-Tech away ,sound comfort, but especially in the Bass ,in Bass sound the MTX runs circles around it.No comparison.

5 out of 5 eggsHeadset just works!

This review is from: MTX StreetAudio iX1 On-Ear Acoustic Monitor Headphones - Red

Pros: This is not a bad headset at all. The bass is rich, and does not drown out the other instruments. This is a huge plus as most "bass" headsets are not properly implemented. That is not the case here. You want to hear some good Bass? Try a few double bass songs. A nice side effect of this headset is that it dampens outside noise. This headset has been tested on phones, tablets, and computers with no complaints.

Cons: None found.

Other Thoughts: The headset comes with the set and two wires. One has it's own volume control, the other one does not.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Sound

This review is from: MTX StreetAudio iX1 On-Ear Acoustic Monitor Headphones - Red

Pros: MTX StreetAudio iX1 On-Ear Acoustic Monitor Headphones what a name lol but what a great set of headphones. I myself do not normally use headphones as I find them cumbersome and unnecessary since I live alone. But I must say I truly enjoyed using these over the last 2 weeks and heard sounds I did not even know my games were making. These headphone are very well built with soft supple leather ear cuffs and aluminum adjustable band makes them tight without hurting your ears. The ability to plug in a second set of earphone in a daisy chain is awesome. I particularity liked the cable that comes with it (2 as a matter of fact) they are superbly made to avoid tangling I have seen with my former step-sons headsets, he constantly untangling it, I do not see this becoming an issue with these headphones. The sound reproduction of these headphones is superb as well. I used them a lot with my iPhone 5 listening to iTunes and WOW!!!! my iPhone never sounded so great. I also used these on several marathon gaming sessions and man oh man the games never sounded better, I cant believe the sounds I was missing until now. They also include a very nice and rugged carrying case with them that easily holds the entire scope of the packaging. Headphones and both cables which have a meshed pocket to hold them perfectly secure.

Cons: I really do not have any cons to mention I could not find a single thing bad with this headphones. So might say there to tight but I think that is a good point as it keeps them securely in place over your ears, as I mentioned in the pro's I did several long gaming sessions and found no fatigue at all.

Other Thoughts: if your looking to buy a nice lightweight superbly made set of headphones look no further. These are awesome great sound reproduction easy on the ears and head as well as the wallet. Having had the chance to review these has made me a headphone user where I normally did not before. Great construction handy carrying case and the ability to plug in another set of phones in daisy chain makes these tops in my book. Buy with confidence.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Sound, a Bit Tight.

This review is from: MTX StreetAudio iX1 On-Ear Acoustic Monitor Headphones - Red

Pros: Excellent sound quality. Unusually good bass for headphones. Sturdy construction (these things are obviously designed to last a lifetime as there is nothing cheap about them in any way). The leather used for the earpiece is incredibly soft. They cover your ear completely and block out extraneous noise. Comes with a hard protective case. The unit comes with two cables, one with a volume control built in (works only with Apple, not android). It’s possible to daisy chain two of these together with one audio source

Cons: The main con, as others have mentioned, is the headphones are too tight and too small for large adult heads! While having them tight makes them sound better as this holds them tight to your ears, they are uncomfortable to wear over extended periods. After a couple of hours, it starts to feel like your head is in a vise. The price is not a con. These are for people who want the best quality audio, and these things will likely last forever, making them a good investment.

Other Thoughts: Frequency response is listed as 10 Hz to 25 kHz, and I have no reason to doubt that. You can barely believe the sound you can get out of an iPhone, iPod or Galaxy phone. They remind me of a pair of AKG studio monitors I had when I was younger.
I’ve never really liked shoving things into my ears, so I prefer over the ear headphones, and these things produce a lot of volume from very small devices.
For some reason, I found they sound better with an iPhone than with a galaxy. The box says that they are designed for Apple products, although you could use them with any sound source that uses a 3.5 mm audio jack, but the controls only work with (newer) Apple products.
I have a Roku which has a headphone jack in the remote. It was amazing to have these on for sporting events. These headphones produce sounds in an amazingly realistic way and it makes it feel like you are right in the stadium. Very impressive.
Bottom line, these are audiophile quality. While they do squeeze your head, if you want the best listening experience this is somewhat necessary for on ear headphones, in order to focus the sound properly and block out outside noise. That being said, these headphones are too small for the biggest heads, and this should be addressed. IMO, the earpieces need to be made larger so they fit AROUND your ears, rather than pressing on them.

3 out of 5 eggsOverall High Quality Headphones BUT Try Before You Buy!

This review is from: MTX StreetAudio iX1 On-Ear Acoustic Monitor Headphones - Red

Pros: * These headphones feel like and appear to be manufactured with high quality materials and engineering. The headband is a nice wide solid metal structure with a lot of flexibility. I took these headphones and straightened them completely flat for an hour (trying to make them looser fitting on my head) and nothing broke. They just sprung back to their original form. When you fold and unfold them at the joints, they snap firmly into place. The cups have a slight swivel to adjust to your head. The cable is indeed tangle resistant due to its somewhat stiff rubber coating (though I wouldn’t say its “tangle free” as advertised) and aluminum is used instead of plastic everywhere it would matter for strength.

* Comes in a nice hard shell zipper case. Nothing fancy, and I won’t ever use it, but it’s there if you want it.

* Bass response (See Bass response in CONS below). I spent several hours comparing the bass output of these headphones to my V-Moda Crossfade LP headphones using different styles of music, particularly hip hop music and subwoofer testing music. These use 40mm speaker drivers vs V-Moda’s 50mm drivers. The difference in how the bass sounds is the same difference in how a sealed subwoofer sounds verses a ported subwoofer. The iX1’s bass is very tight and clean like a sealed subwoofer. The Crossfade’s are like a ported subwoofer, boomy, loud and punchy. The iX1’s bass to my surprise, hits the very bottom of the audible frequency without any drop off and no distortion whatsoever. I did find though that I had to adjust my equalizer to maximum bass to get it to where I like to listen to hip hop best. Rock, pop, and techno sound amazing.

* Mids and highs. This, if anything is what might justify these headphones being $200. Crisp, Clean, and Clear. The three C’s. While I preferred the Crossfades for bass emphasized music, I prefer the iX1’s for everything else. The clarity and musical separation difference is quite noticeable between the two. MTX wins here, big time. Even at very loud volumes, there was no noticeable distortion and Billy Currington sounded like he was singing right in front of me.

* Two 3.5mm, daisy chainable input/output jacks is really a cool little feature, and works great. I was skeptical, thinking that adding a 2nd set of cans to the same output line would affect the quality or power of the audio, but I was wrong. When chained, both headsets sounded the same as using them unchained. It also doesn’t matter what plug you use to for your source. My daughter will have a blast listening like this with her friends.

* The noise isolation works better than on any other headphones I’ve used.

Cons: * Short cable. Being short helps it not get tangled, and stores easily. This could be a pro for you, but for me it’s more of a con. You can always fold up a cable to make it shorter if you need it to be, but you can’t lengthen it to become longer (without adding another cable).

* The remote cable is supposed to be for Apple devices only. It works fine when used on my Samsung Galaxy Note 3, and the pause/play button even worked but the volume did not. If you are using an Android device, realize that you are paying a little more for a little less. If you are using an ipod, well, there is no con here.

* Bass response (See Bass response in PROS above). Listening to hip hop, I preferred my V-Moda headphones. At all volumes, the V-Moda’s bass was louder, more pronounced, and could actually be physically felt. MTX is a car audio company but the iX1’s don’t have that car audio bass punch like the Crossfades do. In any music style other than hip hop or rap, this doesn’t matter as much, but I’m mentioning this here because these iX1’s are specifically advertised as “Bass Headphones”. While they have great bass, IMO, they are not “Bass Headphones”.

* On the ear versus over the ear. This is only a con for me because I prefer over the ear style headphones. They are much more comfortable to me. On the ear phones make my ears sore and sweat more, and noise isolation is no better. I have a pair of Grado SR-80’s which are on the ear style, and I use and prefer them for listening to classical music, television and movies due to the open airiness, and undeniably clean detail Grado is known for. They are extremely light and the open cell foam used to cover the speaker pieces let my ears breath and stay cool over the course of a 2 hour movie. The MTX iX1s really start distracting me after about 30 minutes of use.

* Comfort. Strong quality construction comes with a price. These phones are a little on the heavy side. The rubber cushion on the inside of the headband isn’t really much of a cushion, and is uncomfortable where they rest on top of my head after a while. I’m 6 feet tall at 200lb. The ear pieces don’t come down far enough to fit comfortably even when extended to the maximum. The headband also squeezes the earpieces a little too tightly to wear on the ears comfortably for very long.

* Price. At $200 these seem a little expensive to me. You could probably argue that the price is about right thanks to the quality sound and construction, but I have listened to headphones very similar to these for half that. If the MTX iX1 could be purchased for between $99 and $139, I would add another star to this review.

Other Thoughts: Something like how music sounds is as subjective as it gets. You can take a great pair of headphones, and put them on a deaf person and watch them drop to a 1 star rating, but does that really make them 1 star headphones? Add other factors that can influence someone’s opinion while listening to headphones like music source, equalizer settings, frequency detection capability, comfort, style, preference of music genera, price, and even social influence, and you end up with a wide array of opinions and ratings that seem to contradict or even outright confuse a potential buyer. This is one of those products, if at all possible, that you really need to try before you buy. Two hundred bucks is a lot of money to gamble on headphones for most people so why do it?

So would I buy or recommend these? I would not buy them for the singular reason that they are just a little too small, and uncomfortable for my big head. I think they sound really good, and have many quality features, but I would not tolerate the ear soreness that these brought out in me after an hour or so of using. Would I recommend these? If they fit you, if you listened to them and liked the sound, if you liked the style, if your ears did not get sore, and if the price is acceptable, of course I would. Again, it all comes down to individual subjectivity‎. My opinion gives these headphones 3 stars, minus 2 stars for the listed cons above. If I had a smaller head, and didn’t like bass dominate music they would probably get 4 stars. Then lower the price and I would likely give them 5 stars. My twelve year old daughter gives these headphones 5 stars, because “they are awesome, they feel better, and sound clearer”. My wife wouldn’t buy them at all because of the high price, and she prefers over the ear, open headphones. I would for sure recommend trying them out though. I believe they offer enough quality features, and function to end up being strong 5 star headphones for many people!

4 out of 5 eggsI am not an audiophile, but these sound great to me!

This review is from: MTX StreetAudio iX1 On-Ear Acoustic Monitor Headphones - Red

Pros: - They fit my head! Apparently my head is big; most over the ear headsets don’t fit, but these were great!
- The foam pads were very comfortable on the ear.
- I like that they offer 2 cables (standard & mobile devices) and a choice of which side to plug them in on.
- These feel well built and look like good!
- On my PC: I was impressed with the sound. Music was rich and clear.
- On my Acer W500 Tablet w/ Win8.1: Music and movies sounded fantastic
- On my Lumia 920: Again, the sound was fantastic. Better than I had expected and it sure beats any headphones I have previously used on my phone.

Cons: - While these fit my head, they are maxed out on how far they go. One more ‘click’ would make them even more comfortable.
- Short cables

Other Thoughts: -I can’t list this as a con since the packaging clearly labels the remote and mic cable as working ONLY with iOS devices. But I was hoping they would work my Lumia 920 for volume control and they do not. The Overview & Options page at NewEgg mentions this, but the Specifications page clearly states this cable is for iOS devices only.

These MTX Headphones block outside noise so well, they may end up living at my desk at work so I can block everyone around me who yells in to their phones.

The red ones are definitely a fashion statement, but I like the look and color scheme.

For audio and music, these are great. I’m a fan, 4 stars!

4 out of 5 eggsAlmost perfect

This review is from: MTX StreetAudio iX1 On-Ear Acoustic Monitor Headphones - Red

Pros: Sound quality is among, if not the best, I've ever heard on headphones. You get that feeling you're hearing parts to the music you didn't hear before. The is especially true for the high range.

Ear cups feel like leather --comfortable and high sound dampening. The cups also pivot to help fit your head shape.

Input to either left or right jack. Share audio to any other device through the second 3.5mm jack, not just another pair of this brand headphones as specified in description. Jacks are swappable --no looking to see which jack is the input or output.

Solidly built without adding much weight. Has a premium feel and obviously a high-quality industrial design. Looks expensive and holding them increases the feeling of luxury. They are very nice to touch.

Cons: Size slider does not extend enough to fit large heads. When fully compressed the headphones are as small as childrens headphones. I'm 6'1, 180 pounds and these are too small for my head. They barely cover my ears all the way. I imagine they would be extremely comfortable if they'd size-out a bit more. For reference, my 7 year old girl wears them with the sliders half-way extended, not fully compressed.

iPhone cable can send audio to any device so in my opinion the second buttonless cable should be longer for non-mobile devices like a PC.

The 3.5mm jacks are at an angle, requiring a thin cover on the cable to fit. Mini-jack cable with larger end cover will not fit.

Other Thoughts: From my 15 years experience with high-end speakers, I would say this can register about 10-15 hertz, which is very low bass. While these don't "punch" or "bump", they are solid and have plenty of very low-range response.

I've got several other brands of earbuds and earphones, but these sound the best. It's too bad they don't fit my head.

The top padding is made of rubber.

Speaker drivers have ability to be much louder when connected to a PC or amplifier compared to mobile device. The extra loudness seems to only come from the high-end, leaving out the bass when at higher volume. An equalizer can help with this.

iPhone cable is 4 foot 3 inches. The buttonless cable is 4 foot.

My 10 year old son prefers these to his Beats. If you have a smaller head, these are top-notch headphones for a fair price.

I took off a star for them being too small. The cable shortness is fine with me since these are advertised as iPod/iPhone/iPad headphones.

3 out of 5 eggsDisappointing

This review is from: MTX StreetAudio iX1 On-Ear Acoustic Monitor Headphones - Red

Pros: - Daisy Chaining
- Very Solid Construction
- Cables Feel Well Built
- Hardcover Case with Room for Extra Stuff (iPod, more cables, etc.)

Cons: - Cable Ends are Too Short to be Able to Pull out of Jacks Nicely
- Smell is a little Off-Putting at First
- Audio is Sub-Par at this Price Point

Other Thoughts: Build quality is solid. The frame is sturdy and feels well built, and the audio cables have a quality heft to them. The case doesn’t exude quality, but it is functional and has room to fit an iPod or iPhone in with the headphones and cables. The ability to daisy chain these headphones I think is a creative feature, and unlike I thought, it doesn’t affect volume too much with multiple headsets plugged in. Now for the gripes. The smell of the padding (which is very soft) is rather strong when you first open them. It shouldn’t be a deal killer, just be aware when you open them for the first time. The cables, while nice, have a short and slippery end which makes them hard to pull out of jacks. I find myself gripping the cable itself to pull, which I hate. And now on to audio which gets its own section of despise.

I compared these headphones to my set of V-MODA Crossfade LP headphones. It is a rather vague comparison as the V-MODAs are open and over-ear, and these MTXs are closed and on-ear. Considering the MTXs are newer and more expensive, I expected them to sound better. I was horribly wrong. The V-MODAs sound like headphones should: the audio is clear, the bass is present but not too powerful, the highs and mids come through well. These MTXs sound like ear buds: you can hear the bass if you listen for it, the mids are there, and the highs sound like you have a tweeter next to your ear. Now, a good equalizer setting makes these sound better, but my V-MODAs outperform even with a flat equalizer. The bottom line is, these “Rich Bass Headphones” have no bass.

I think these MTX headphones might be worth it at a quarter of the price, but otherwise, there is much better out there. I do not suggest purchasing these headphones.
