3 out of 5 eggsGood NAS but some issues

Pros: Fast enough for home needs, very stable, easy set up

Cons: Data Replicator 3, expensive, minimal instructions on set up.

Other Thoughts: I bought this so I could have a local backup copy of all of our photos, videos and files. It is fast enough for my needs, copied about 230GB in 24 hours over my Gb network. However, a severe limitation is the Data Replicator software that is downloaded from the Synology website; it does not perform incremental backups but rather it does a full back up each time. This is eating up a lot of disk space. Synology tech support confirmed this and suggested to use their Cloud Station app. I am going to try that next. Hopefully it works well. Otherwise, I'll have to look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat buy

Pros: Has been in constant use for 8 months with no problems what so ever. Easy set up.

Cons: Most of the cons have to do with my own learning curve, first NAS I have set up, so no true cons with product

3 out of 5 eggsGreat hardware - limiting software features

Pros: The DS214 has a very easy setup, a rich set of features, and works right out of the box. I created a shared folder that syncs with my wife's My Documents folder (and all sub-folders) so that she has a backup copy of all of her documents, spreadsheets and other files. For my PC, I created a shared folder which my backup software uses to keep the backup files for my PC. As I have some shared software, pictures, audio, and video, I have also created shared folders for all of the above accessible by all of the people in my house.

Cons: I've used the DS214 for my home and for a non-profit office. In the case of my home, the software that came with the DS214 did not support creating full, incremental, backups of my home PCs--I had to buy Paragon Backup and Recovery 15 Home software to take a complete block-level backup of my PC. For my wife, I used DSM Cloud Station to maintain a synced copy of her My Documents folder (and all sub-folders). For the office, I could not create versioned backups (allowing the users to retrieve one of many prior versions of a file backed-up from a shared folder) to an external hard drive--I had to buy a 2nd internal hard drive and create the versioned backups on the internal drive. This will obviously make for a tricky migration to a 4-bay Synology box when the office eventually exceeds the current capacity (won't happen for a good while).

Other Thoughts: The non-profit office will eventually use several of the DS214 feature to "serve media file" such as audio and video files. While the versioning backups required using the 2nd slot right-away, it is possible to migrate two hard drives from a DS214 into a 4-bay DS box in the future.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great!

Pros: Really easy to set-up
Works well with macs - I have my laptop backing up to it automatically with time machine
Quiet + small size
Automatic downloads work well
Automatic uploads
Can access it from my phone and check its status!

Cons: Can't write to an HFS+ Journaled external hard drive, at least not without significant command line work, which is beyond my level at this point

Other Thoughts: I think this thing has started me down the path of data hoarding...

3 out of 5 eggsFrustration

Pros: The unit does exactly what I want it to. However, after about one month of use it stopped working. I don't know what happened. Just walked into the office one day and it wasn't turned on. So I pushed the power button and it won't work. I am certain that it will be fixed. Just a little frustrated that it only worked for a month.

Cons: Died in 30 days.

1 out of 5 eggsMaybe a dud?

Pros: Nice looking UI

Cons: Haven't gotten it to work yet. I started out updating the device, changed some settings to allow for anywhere access and began uploading the files from one of my 1tb drives (only had about 600gb of data and I had 2 1tb drives in this NAS). My computer went into sleep mode during the transfer and after that I couldn't connect to the device. I tried power cycling, but the power light just blinked at me like it was in the shtdown process and after 24hrs, I had to pull the plug. Since then, I have the hardest time powering on and connecting. It usually takes me 5-10 attempt at powering this on, waiting for the status light to settle in a ready stage and attempting to connect. Nothing. On top of that, I don't think I've once had it shut down using the power button, it always takes pulling the plug.

I've contacted synology support, but it's been over 72 hrs and I've heard nothing. I hope I have a dud, but who knows. With all the time fiddling and the several attempts, I'm past my return/replacement period with Newegg.

Other Thoughts: I'm pretty tech savvy, except when it comes to networking. I was excited at the previous reviews claiming the ease of use of the UI. It's pretty and seems simple enough (and hopefully it is on a good unit), but all I've wanted to do is mirror a drive on my computer and make it accessible from anywhere. Even using their 'apps' (the UI is essentially a desktop environment. There are addt'l apps you can download through the in-program store to manage different aspects. One of these was a 'cloud station' app which is supposed to make syncing a drive with the NAS a cinch). I was having trouble determing if things were done correctly. Again, it never worked long enough to know.

And why the heck hasn't synology support gotten back to me? I already know it's going to take awhile for the back and forth troubleshooting. What a pain, this was supposed to be easy.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Fairly easy to set up. Interface easy to use especially if familiar with networking.

Cons: Fussy front plate seating

Other Thoughts: Some knowledge of networking required for easiest install. For windows you need to know how to find the NAS. There is a utility included that can find it. Remember that this is a server.

I have set up the NAS as shared protected folders for each with shortcuts in Win clients. I just use file dragging to the shared folders on the NAS.

The NAS application is as an archive for mostly photographic material of up to 25MB per file to release workstation disk space. The NAS is set up as a RAID 1 (mirrored disks) of 3 TB each giving 3 TB of storage. I used Western Digital RED class drives intended for this purpose. It should be noted that while a RAID 1 protects against losing one drive (and allows rebuilding) it does not protect against file corruptions caused by software. I also recommend that a bit of upload to the NAS performance be sacrificed by turning off the NAS disk write caching to prevent corruption in case of improper NAS shutdown. I have the NAS on a standby UPS power protection unit and I normally shut it down after each computer session and once I forgot that the NAS was powered up and I shutdown the UPS first. The NAS file structure remained intact. To the credit of Synology they mention the fragility of using a disk write cache regarding improper shut down directly on the setup interface.

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic NAS

Pros: Great Performance for the Price
Fantastic UI
Easy Set Up
Good Support

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: I set this up as my network storage for my house, wanting to centralize all my data. I have my fiance's Macbook Pro set to time machine to this, as well as my laptop. I have 80+ blu rays on this as well, and so far no issues. It streams well, and the apps made by Synology are fantastic.

5 out of 5 eggsBest NAS for home use

Pros: - DSM is the best GUI interface for these sorts of devices
- Fairly easy to customize with available add-on software
- Streams video/music perfectly
- AirPrint support (!)

Cons: - More expensive than other 2-bay NAS devices
- ipkg support spotty right now
- Requires a bit of technical knowledge to configure properly
- No exFat support...weak

Other Thoughts: I bought a DS1812+ at work for file sharing over a year ago, so was already familiar with Synology and DSM. This is essentially the same thing, just with less bays and a slower processor. So far, no issues. Copying files using SMB is between 80-100mb/s, AFP is around the same. I have noticed rsync is quite a bit slower. No exFat support means I had to mount an external drive on my laptop and copy the files over vs. plugging it into the USB port of the device itself. That was irritating to say the least.
