Creativity from Any Point of View
Stimulate your creativity! The NIKON D5100 offers a host of new photographic and video tools that deliver superior performance and exceptional image quality with surprising versatility. With 16.2 megapixels, a swivel Vari-Angle LCD monitor, full HD movie capabilities, new EFFECTS Mode and new HDR settings, you hold the power and performance to capture beautiful moments and the freedom to get creative.
Vari-Angle LCD Monitor
Great Shots at Every Angle
Take pictures or record movies from a unique viewpoint, the D5100's 3.0 inch, super sharp, 921,000-dot Vari-angle LCD monitor allows for versatile high quality viewing and playback. Explore every angle, with overhead shots, waist level candids, ground level and fun self portraits; you will never miss a shot. This Vari-angle monitor allows you to be creative from any point of view.
Effects Mode
More Fun and Artistic Photos and Movies
The D5100 incorporates an amazing array of special effects for use when taking still pictures or recording D-Movie Full HD movies. Selective Color isolates any color within the scene; capture details in places too dark for your own eyes using Night Vision; create bright, glowing images filled with atmosphere with High Key; emphasize the mood of a scene using Low Key; Miniature Effect makes a scene look like a miniature scale model; and Color Sketch creates color outlines of the subject that are played back as a series of stills in a slide show.
Tell Better Stories
Full HD 1080p D-Movie with Sound
The D5100 delivers exceptionally high-quality movie performance due to its full HD capability while the latest in Full-time autofocus takes the guess work out of tracking your subjects while in motion. Effortless moviemaking is at your fingertip thanks to D5100's ergonomically placed Live View and Movie start button. Your D-Movies will come to life thanks to D5100's sound recording capability - get stereo sound with Nikon's optional ME-1 Stereo Microphone.
High Dynamic Range (HDR)
Exquisite Detail in Highlight and Shadow
In scenes with extreme contrasts, such as bright, sunlit clouds and a foreground deep in shadow, it was once quite difficult to render the textures of both equally. Not any more. D5100 combines two exposures to create an image revealing an extremely wide dynamic range, but with less noise and richer color gradation than ever before.
Stunning Image Quality
Image Quality in a Class of Its Own
Incorporating the latest Nikon D-SLR technologies such as the 16.2MP DX-format CMOS sensor and EXPEED 2 image processing engine, the D5100 delivers outstanding image quality. Its CMOS sensor offers a remarkably wide ISO range (ISO 100 to 6400) with reduced noise which enables you to shoot at faster shutter speeds and capture scenes and subjects with less blur. Handheld shooting and full HD movies come out looking great even in low light.
Speed and Performance that Delivers
With high-speed continuous shooting at approximately 4 frames per second, you'll never miss a moment, and with D5100's large optical viewfinder providing accurate and realistic composition, you'll get precise view and focus in every situation.
Capture Your Subjects
D5100's 11-point AF system provides flexibility to compose the shot you want ensuring your subject is captured sharply wherever it's located in the frame. Working together with the Scene Recognition System, the camera can keep your main subject in focus even if the composition changes using Nikon's exclusive 3D-tracking.

4 out of 5 eggsAmazing for the Price

Pros: Amazing camera, I purchased this camera to start learning how to take great pictures and get into the camera scene. I am learning daily at the amazing things this camera can do and have no regrets.

Cons: Not that this is on the camera, but the seller marked up the price to 799.99$ then had it on sale for 459.99$. After the sale ended the price went to 499.99$ with no type of sale. Great marketing to bring in poor people looking to get a great deal.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat camera, wonderful starter kit

Pros: Lens is perfect for "all around" use and nearly full sky astro-photography. Massive amount of features, but very easy to navigate menus and use them all. Vibration reduction works flawlessly and doesn't degrade the image like digital VR on cheaper cameras. Huge range of compatible lenses available.

Cons: Doesn't come with the simple IR remote for required for bulb mode and some other features.

Other Thoughts: The remotes are cheap and readily available, but; When you're charging this much for a camera, why lock your customer out from a bunch of features over such a cheap remote? It's such a good camera that it's not enough to deduct any stars :-)

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic

Pros: Wonderful camera. For anyone looking to get into a DSLR who knows a little bit about photography or who is just learning, this is the perfect camera for you. A step up from the D3200 with more features and amazing images, its just a great camera to learn on.

Cons: It doesn't make me dinner.

Other Thoughts: I took this camera with me on vacation and shot everything in site. I used full manual and shot in raw and the pictures came out amazing. You cannot go wrong with this camera.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Camera, old tech

Pros: Cheap

Cons: old tech

Other Thoughts: They are trying to sell these now since the 3200 is coming out in a matter of weeks, once it does, you can get the 3200 at almost the same price as this. I would wait and get the 3200 and get a camera that's 2x better, or, wait until the 3200 is out, and the price on the 5100 plummets.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat bang for the buck

Pros: Light weight and durable

Cons: Lousy strap. Typical.

Other Thoughts: If you couple this camera with good glass you will most likely be very happy with your purchase. The kit lens is okay to start with but save your pennies. I picked up a 70-300 and a 35mm 1.4 to accompany my 5100 and am happy as a clam.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat for Video Work and not a Bad Still Camera

Pros: Price, swivel LCD and the sensor, image quality and relative ease of use. For 750 even the included kit lense is not bad. I have a D2X and D200 and a lot of good Nikkor glass. I am 6-7 years behind the curve in DLSR bodies, so I am very excited what the Nikon sensors (not Sony sensors in the D2s and 200s) can do. I also have large format printer and print quite often. Not shooting for money anymore, so I saved 750 over the D7000. I usually go for the motto get it right the first time but that would mean getting the D3 and I do not have $6000 lying around or even 3K for the D300. The image capturing is good enough and I have 24" prints to prove it. Video is better than any handycam I've used.

Cons: Not good for older lenses, that's my only beef. And the manual operation is not that great. But my D2 and d200 still works. But really, I bought this camera so I can shoot video. My wife is happy too. Also the color is not as neutral as the other high end models. I have my own glass and they look ridiculous in this camera. A 55-200 was part of the deal and to be honest that works better for video work any way than the big 2.8 lenses. I am sure one can argue about the autofoucs and the exposure database but it is 750 dollars. I have not dropped it hard yet but the plastic body may be suspect. Battery also does not last as long.

Other Thoughts: I miss the control I have with the D2 and D200 but my wife does not. also because it is small it does not look like you are a press photographer. If it gets stolen 750 is an easier pill to swallow. The swivel LCD is really a good thing for video work and Nikon did this right. For parents who need to take photos/videos of their kids in badly lit gyms, this with a couple of VR lenses really makes it very useful and fulfilling.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing upgrade from D3000

Pros: - Swivel Screen
- Takes Video
- easy to clean
- Adaptable Lense.
- Live View Finder
- Easy to use

Cons: - slow shutter, My D3000 had a faster shutter..
- Video isnt THAT great, lag's a bit when alot is going on.
- Shoots in NEF not DNG native (need a converter)

Other Thoughts: I noticed my Girlfriends (SAME EXACT CAMERA) has a slower View Screen, and it render's the pictures ALOT slower.
