Canon adds their latest flagship digital camera to the award-winning G Series line – the PowerShot G12. The camera offers the advanced amateurs best-in-class flexibility and all-round premium performance, together with professional levels of control and support for a wide range of accessories.

The G12 is still loaded with powerful technologies that have made the G Series cameras so renowned, like the Canon HS SYSTEM for exceptional low light performance, 2.8-inch Vari-angle PureColor System LCD with an optical viewfinder, and RAW mode. Now, this flagship camera paves the way with new upgrades like 720p HD recording with stereo sound, High Dynamic Range, Electronic Level, Tracking AF, a Front Dial and much more to give you even more creative control than before!

  • newegg Canon HS SYSTEM The Canon PowerShot G12 employs the Canon HS SYSTEM by combining a high-sensitivity 10.0 Megapixel CMOS sensor and Canon's DIGIC 4 Image Processor to deliver spectacular images with minimal noise. Beautiful low light shots are possible at both low and high ISO speeds. With a new maximum setting of ISO 3200, blur and camera shake are notably reduced for the ultimate in sharpness and clarity.
  • newegg 720P HD Shooting and Playback via HDMI The Canon PowerShot G12 is capable of recording video in stunning high definition (1280 x 720 pixels) with stereo sound. The camera also makes it easy to enjoy HD videos (and still photos) on your HDTV with a mini-HDMI connector for direct connection to a high-definition TV monitor.
  • newegg Canon Hybrid IS By employing both an angular sensor and an accelerometer, Canon's highly advanced Hybrid IS corrects camera shake from two sources (the blur caused by the angle of the camera and the "shift blur" that happens when your subject moves parallel to the camera), delivering sharp, blur-free images even when you zoom in close to your subject.
  • newegg 5x Wide-Angle Optical Zoom (28-140mm) with Optical Image Stabilizer The Canon PowerShot G12 features a versatile 28mm Wide-Angle 5x optical zoom lens that allows you to shoot most scenes from wide-angle to telephoto. When it's time to take a closer look, the Canon Optical Image Stabilizer helps minimize camera shake and reveal almost every detail.
  • newegg A host of Optional Accessories Support The Canon PowerShot G12 is compatible with the Speedlite flash series intended for all EOS series SLR cameras. Attach a Speedlite flash to the hot shoe, and you can set and control the flash on the "Flash Control" menu in the camera. With a Speedlight, the G12 is given extra functions such as autoflash metering, FE lock and Flash exposure compensation, as well as continuous shooting with external flash. Also Canon's Speedlite Transmitter ST-E2 enables you to have multiple slave flashes and wireless control. A Tele-Converter lens designed for the G12, Filter Adapter FA-DC58B and WP-DC34 Waterproof Case is also available.
  • newegg High Dynamic Range Canon developed the High Dynamic Range shooting mode to make the PowerShot G12 even more intuitive. Under High Dynamic Range (Tripod is required), the camera will shoot three different exposures in a succession (underexposed, overexposed and normal) and then merge them into a single image. Underexposed areas are combined with the overexposed and vice versa, resulting in an evenly detailed image with flattering shadows and highlights.

5 out of 5 eggsBought for my mother

Pros: My mother loves this camera. It is a great step for those that want near-SLR quality without the complication and price of a serious camera.

Has RAW and some other powerful features that most point-and-shoots don't.

Cons: A little bit slow between photos, but that doesn't really bother her.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Camera

Pros: This camera is a perfect trade off between the limited capabilities of small "point and shoot" cameras and too bulky DSLRs. Takes beautiful photos, the low light / low noise capabilities are truly amazing - I have taken so many pictures that I never would have gotten because they are out of range of ANY flash - the flash rarely goes off when using the "P" program mode. If you were upset when you found out the pixel count fell, don't be - the resulting sensitivity is more than worth it.

I have owned a G6, G9, and now a G12 - I LOVE the Canon G series cameras. Just barely small enough to put in a hip / belt case and take with you - a camera is no good if it is in a camera bag in the trunk or back at the hotel! Video capablities are without equal in a package this size.

Cons: More bulky than previous G series cameras and more plastic in the body. The G-9 had a metal body and was slimmer which made it more usefull as a wrist strap camera in a hip case.

Camera does not come with a wrist strap - the Canon WS-30 wrist strap is perfect for this camera. Shame on Canon for charging so much for them when bought through Canon parts dept.

Other Thoughts: I have a DSLR and several smaller point & shoot cameras - the Canon G series are my favorite. If you can see it this camera can photograph it - with quality. I prefered the G9's size and view screen, but this camera blows it away with better sensitivity and low noise.

4 out of 5 eggsJust What I wanted

Pros: Beautiful camera, a super nice upgrade from G2. I feel guilty about spending so much on myself.

Cons: a) Price
b) NO manual 9who wants to print out a 200+ page PDF

Other Thoughts: 1)Surprised how small the camera is I thought it would be larger.
2) Newegg packing is disgraceful. A handful of peanuts - No bubble wrap to protect a $500 camera. I have had $50 hard drives wrapped better in bubble wrap.
3) Confusion on which accessories I need, lens bellows,UV lens, lens cap? Not much information available.

5 out of 5 eggsTrip to Paris

Pros: I purchased this camera at the last minute before I went to Paris for 10 days. I was debating between this camera and the 60D. I wanted control over the camera and RAW.

I am back from Paris and this camera did a wonderful job. I took some HD videos and my family was amazed at the HD quality.

Cons: 2 fps. A bit on the slow side.

Other Thoughts: I was able to put the camera in my pocket on loose fitting jeans. I purchased a 8 gb class 10 memory card and it was great for video. I took both RAW and jpeg at the same time. I used a class 2 and the video was choppy.

4 out of 5 eggsWell worth it!

Pros: I have the venerable Powershot G2 from almost 10 years ago. Sensor is finally going (testament to its longevity) so I decided it was time for an upgrade. Not disappointed at all!

Fantastic functionality in a small package. While the lens is small (smaller than the G2), it is larger than most "point and shoot" cameras (better than phone lenses), and the sensor within is top notch. Great color reproduction. Fast - take a shot and while it is being previewed, tap the shutter button briefly and you are ready to shoot again. Auto white balance is great and offers a manual calibration mode to get the best colors from the environment you are shooting in.

Works great for underwater photos and video as well.

Cons: Auto functions? Honestly why bother including them on something like this. Do yourself a favor and learn the camera and shoot consistently on the "P"rogram mode (or other adjustable modes), and shoot with RAW.

Overall body has nice grip and weight, but honestly is a bit small to hold in large hands. I missed some of the bulk and flair to grip onto from the old G2. Solution: attach a tripod plate to the camera which offered decent finger grip on the underside. For others this will probably be a non-issue.

Other Thoughts: Glad I got it while it was discounted, but really, it's worth it's current price ($499).

As for the 4 egg rating - I really didn't dock an egg due to negativity of the camera. I just rarely trust overly gushing 5-star reviews. I tend to read the 4 and 3 star reviews and thought others may do more of the same.

5 out of 5 eggsThe next best thing to an SLR

Pros: I had a G6 and then replaced it with a G7 which finally died a months ago. I don't use most of the manual settings (I bought the G6 hoping to learn them but lost interest). I decided to save some money and get a good camera with out all the bells and whistles so I bought a Nikon Coolpix 8100. It didn't even compare. It was slow and took alot of blurry pictures. The detail just wasn't there when you zoomed in on a picture. I want a good camera and use it for family pictures and edit with Photoshop. However most of the time I just have it set to Auto. I RMAed the Nikon and got a G12. This thing is amazing. It is extremely fast at start up and taking shots. I love how it auto selects the picture type (macro, portrait, etc). I know it does a million manual things that I don't use but it's worth the price to have it take amazing shots on auto

Cons: It's not small or light. In fact it's bigger and heavier than my G7 was. It's not cheap.

Other Thoughts: This is about as good as it gets with out a bulky expensive SLR. Considering that it is a great value. I love the flip our screen. (something that went away on the G6). This is an awesome camera that I would reccomend to anyone whether they want to shoot manually or just leave it on auto.

5 out of 5 eggsFine Camera

Pros: Ergonomics, such as the front control wheel, is a very useful improvement over it's predecessor, the G11, and the 720 HD is a huge improvement over the 640x480 of its predecessors.
The noise level at high ISO's is quite good for a camera with such a small sensor, and with some good noise reduction software such as Neat Image, it's easy to clean up the noise, especially if you shoot RAW.

Cons: Too bad it does not have the classic lens ring control of the much smaller S95. It would have been a real breakthrough to equip this camera with even a bit larger sensor.

Other Thoughts: Anyone who complains about this relative to micro fourthirds or APS-C cameras is a complete idiot. Size complaints are less unreasonable. If you have too much noise in your photos, try converting to b&w, where noise can be disguised as grain with the application of some software such as the free Virtual Photographer plugin.

5 out of 5 eggsSemi Bulletproof Advanced P&S Canon

Pros: I know I said semi bulletproof but it’s probably Totally bulletproof. And it’s a nice camera. No its not meant for your shirt pocket, but I have on a good many occasions put it in my jeans pocket. It’s a big bulge but it’s in there. I have taken this to India, Japan & Honduras, and it preformed quite well. The battery life is awesome. Days would go be before I could find a power outlet and this thing just kept working. I didn’t use the flash much though. Its go full manual if you know all about that..

Cons: You pay a little more for the fact they had Mike Tyson punch it and it didn’t break. It’s meant to take some abuse. There are smaller ones that aren’t as bulky.
