In the twelve years since the original ELPH was instantly and universally proclaimed an icon of style, successive ELPH cameras have remained at the forefront of design even while boasting the very latest in digital technology. Now, opening a new era of ELPH design, the PowerShot ELPH 520 HS digital camera is both homage to the original ELPH and astonishing synthesis of Canon's leadership in technical advancements. A mere 0.76 inches thick, it is the world's thinnest 12x zoom camera. Canon's pursuit of perfection has driven the development of new miniaturization including a new lens and new 10.1 Megapixel CMOS sensor that, powered by Canon's DIGIC 5 Image Processor, create images as breathtakingly beautiful as the camera itself. It's also packed with the latest Canon technologies including Smart AUTO with new Face ID and Full HD Video. Brimming with a full range of advanced technologies that automatically optimize the image quality of every shot, the PowerShot ELPH 520 HS digital camera makes the ultimate style icon incredibly effortless.

  • newegg Incredibly Thin Design with 3.0-inch PureColor LCD screen At an astonishingly thin 0.76 inches, the PowerShot ELPH 520 HS is significantly slimmer than competitors' 12x zoom models. And, the PowerShot ELPH 520 HS digital camera's large and bright 3.0-inch PureColor LCD screen makes it easy to view and frame your shots in high resolution (461,000 dots). Its PureColor System LCD uses a delta arrangement of dots, an arrangement that works better for the organic nature of photos and videos, allowing you to review your images with exceptional clarity with rich, true-to-life color. Moreover, you can view the LCD screen over a surprisingly wide angle - above, below or to either side - without color shifts and with minimal reflections. A scratch-proof hard coating and a dust-repellent fluorine coating ensure a durable screen that dependably displays clear, vibrant images.
  • newegg 12x Optical Zoom and 28mm Wide-Angle Lens Newly designed to custom-fit the PowerShot ELPH 520 HS digital camera's incredibly thin profile, the camera's 12x Optical Zoom and 28mm Wide-Angle Lens is a marvel of optical technology. The Wide-Angle lens gives you more to work with in every shot, adding depth, perspective and grandeur as called for. With a 12x Optical Zoom, no shot is beyond your reach. It also incorporates the latest in Canon UA lens technology, suppressing lens aberration for outstanding image quality throughout the entire zoom range. The camera's sensor was specifically designed for this lens, so even at the long end of the zoom images are bright and clear.
  • newegg Experience the Power with Canon DIGIC 5 Image Processor & HS SYSTEM The latest-generation Canon DIGIC 5 Image Processor brings phenomenal increases in processing speed and power. Improved chip architecture and algorithms deliver greatly expanded functionality with further refinement in image quality. Enhanced i-Contrast performance adjusts differences between light and dark areas to achieve even more natural-looking results. The faster processing speed also results in faster continuous shooting capability while maintaining full image quality. Also, Canon DIGIC 5 Image Processor makes possible a new, highly advanced automatic white balance system. Combining the power of high-sensitivity 10.1 Megapixel Canon CMOS sensor and the DIGIC Image Processor, the Canon HS SYSTEM lets you take bright, clear photos in an even wider range of shooting situations. Beautiful low-light shots are possible with minimal noise and maximum detail in highlight and shadow areas.

The camera has a dedicated movie button that lets you start and stop recording instantly without going through layers of menus or operate switches or dials to switch to and from video recording mode. The PowerShot ELPH 520 HS also incorporates an electronic wind filter, which suppresses wind noise that can muffle or distort the sound. Enjoy and share videos by simply connecting its HDMI terminal to your HDTV using an HDMI cable. You can even control the playback of your images and videos on any CEC-enabled HDTV using the TV's remote control. Plus, the PowerShot ELPH 520 HS supports Apple iFrame Movie so you can enjoy movies in compatible Mac and Windows video applications.

For stills, the system automatically selects among Normal, Panning, Macro (Hybrid) and Tripod IS modes. When shooting video, the system automatically selects among Dynamic, Powered, Macro and Tripod IS modes. With Intelligent IS, you can concentrate on image capture, letting the camera make the most effective IS settings to assure the steadiest possible image.
  • newegg Improved Smart Auto & New Face ID Smart AUTO for the PowerShot ELPH 520 HS has been significantly expanded, making it easier than ever to capture the sharp, bright, colorful images - and videos - you're looking for. By assessing various factors in both the background and the subject, the system recognizes 58 predefined shooting situations and automatically selects the camera settings that will yield the best possible results.. Face ID is one of the most advanced and exciting new features of the PowerShot ELPH 520 HS, giving you an easy way to improve every shot of the people you love. Simply take a picture of up to 12 faces you would like the camera to register, then enter names and ages. Once a person is registered, the camera will pick him or her out of a group (even against a busy background) and adjust focus and exposure to his or her face, even recognizing faces in profile.

3 out of 5 eggsSleek design, disappointing images

Pros: Great looking little camera, very compact and the 12x optical zoom is a great feature.

Cons: If you view the images that this camera takes at full size (rather than resized for facebook, etc) they appear VERY grainy, especially with indoor lighting. Outdoor, daytime pictures are not nearly as bad, but noise is still visible in every picture I have taken with it. At full size, the images to look mottled and fuzzy with lots of randomly colored pixels in darker areas of the photos. I have owned many point and shoot digital cameras over the years, mostly Canons, and have not had this issue before. As smart as this camera looks, it just doesn't live up to what I had hoped for it.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Camera & Great Service

Pros: This is a great little camera. We used it for the first time Halloween night, and I was pleasantly surprised by the power of the flash outside in the dark. The quality of the photos are great.

I love that fact the camera easily fits in a shirt pocket, without a lot of bulk or extra weight. It will make caring the camera so much more convenient.

Great camera, for a great price.

Cons: My only con relates to me not reading the specs. The camera takes MicroSD memory, not the SD that I assumed it took.

MicroSD is on the shelf of almost every store now. It was only a con because I rushing to find a card on Halloween night. :)

5 out of 5 eggsgreat little camera that packs a big zoom

Pros: tiny. Fits in my pocket no problem and its easy to walk in your pants with

face recognition software works like charm.

image quality is on par with camera at this range

the zoom easily beats my wifes camera. This camera zooms in very good.

Cons: battery life is just okay. I can almost a full days worth of shots before it needs recharging

Other Thoughts: I owned this camera since this summer and it has been my companion for my summer vacation and
weekend trips. I also have a nice DSLR but most of the time I was using this camera because I didn’t
bring my DSLR everywhere and this camera was able to fit in my glove compartment so it goes where I
go. What I really liked about this camera was its extended zoom. I was able to shoot images of some nice
seagulls at the pier from far away without scary them from at least 100 feet away in good detail. I also
used this camera when I shot some images of my family at a dinner gathering and it did a great job of
getting all faces tack sharp with its facial recognition. One thing that struck me was its all thin and sleek
metal body. Compared to my wife’s mostly plastic bulky Olympus camera this camera looks much more
durable and has a better build quality than I was expecting for this price range. I am glad I bought the
Elph 520 HS and think it has done the job nicely so far. I am very satisfied and would buy this again.

5 out of 5 eggsbest ultra compact digital camera

Pros: - excellent 12x zoom for the size. Im used to 5x but 12x optical is nice feature
- image stabilization works well
- quick start-up times
- nice looking design. reminiscent of Elph cameras of past

Cons: - low light image quality is grainy, pretty much a daylight camera.
- using micro SD-card can be inconvenient since need to use adapter

Other Thoughts: This camera is an excellent replacement to my older canon powershot. I was sold on design that is like my old 35mm Elph camera I had in the 90's. But besides the design, this camera stand out feature is its compact ultra 12x zoom. This is great for times like going to concerts and you need to sneak in camera to get close-up shots from far away. This camera will do the trick. I'm very pleased with the daylight quality shots. Its spot on sharp and the zoom shots look great as well. However where this camera lacks is low light quality. I shot some images indoors and its was grainy but acceptable. I tried using the flash but I only use it if its too dark. Overall Im very happy with my new Canon elph 520 and would recommend for anyone looking for an ultra compact pocketable 12x zoom camera to take on trips where they need that extra zoom without the bulk and weight of a larger camera. Highly recommended

1 out of 5 eggsjust plain bad

Pros: Very small, buttons are well placed. Huge lcd screen. Face tracking is a very nice feature.

Cons: Horrible picture quality. My Galaxy SII takes better pictures. Photos are very noisy and blurry even at the highest settings. Cant believe this camera is 279.00

Other Thoughts: My 6 year old Canon s3 IS is light years beyond this in picture quality. Ill assume that we sacrifice quality for convenience. Wanted to exchange for a Panasonic, no dice. No refunds either.
