4 out of 5 eggsgreat little camera but some annoying faults

Pros: - It's a rugged camera I can carry in places I would not carry my dSLR's or point-and-shoot: mountain biking, trail running, at the beach or in the desert (where sand can ruin other cameras), and in the rain.

- It takes surprisingly good pictures, at least in sunshine, and adequate pictures indoors.

- Battery life is good: 2 hours 9 minutes when shooting full HD and 2 hours 30 minutes when shooting WVGA with a 32GB SDHC card (with a 8GB card, full HD recording stops at 1 hour 28 minutes even though the SDHC card is only about 60% full)

- Locking doors for USB/HDMI and SD card are cleverly and effectively designed (but apparently too clever for some owners, who resort to breaking them to open them)

- Simple, intuitive user interface

- Bright LCD screen that is usable even in direct sunlight

- Nice, functional feel to the camera's body

Cons: - Non-removable battery

- Digital zoom only

- No lens cap

- No live view - you can't send a feed over an HDMI or USB cable to an external monitor

- No external audio port

Other Thoughts: In researching this camera, the most common complaint I read about it is locking up; however this was fixed with a firmware update. My ZX5, which I bought in April 2013, came with the firmware update already installed. You can tell which version of the firmware your ZX5 has by clicking Setup and selecting "About". If the Camera Firmware Version is 1.06, you have the updated firmware.

A surprisingly common complaint is people not being able to open the USB/HDMI and SD card doors. Kodak made a design error here. They should have put arrows on the case showing which way to slide the locks to open them. It's not obvious, but if you know how to do it, it does work very well, far better than the doors on my waterproof Pantech Element tablet.

The first ZX5 I received was defective - it wouldn't install Kodak's Arcsoft software and wouldn't let me view the contents of the folder where it was supposed to be installed (using Windows Explorer). I don't intend to use the software, but I was concerned that it might indicate other problems that might surface later, so I got a replacement, which is fine.

I decided that the ZX5's faults were serious enough that I couldn't use it for the purposes for which I bought it (conducting field interviews), so I ordered a Panasonic DMC-SZ7 to replace it, but I liked the Kodak so much that I kept it to use as a portable camera that I can carry with me no matter what the conditions.

I love this camera. It has its faults and limitations, but overall it's a great camera for anyone who wants to be able to carry a camera while mountain biking, trail running, and under conditions that would menace most other cameras.

4 out of 5 eggsNot Bad At All

Pros: HD, Small, good storage, good sound, good video, HDMI out, stupid easy to use, price

Cons: Wish it had a white balance adjustment and the ability to change the focus of the light metering

Other Thoughts: Good fun inexpensive way to catch video; and remember its only 100 bucks when comparing to others

3 out of 5 eggsHmm

Pros: The video stabilization seems to work really well. The camera is nice and compact and seems fairly rugged. The sound quality is better than I had imagined as well.

Cons: I bought the camera to replace an AIPtek. I was disappointed in the fact I had to d-load a firmware upgrade as soon as I bought it....the camera locked "On" and would not turn off until I found the reset button. I am somewhat un-impressed with the still shots and lack of a flash.

Other Thoughts: If the camera still quality was better....I would like it more. but overall, it will work for me. I thought the name Kodak would indicate a significantly more impressive product. but it is still early in the purchase. Maybe my review will change in time.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat for the outdoors!

Pros: This unit is compact and very intuitive to use. Hit the power button and snap a photo, or one push button to switch to video and hit record.

Fits great in shirt pocket without too much discomfort.

Auto adjusts in different light.

Video seems to capture very well with anti shake. Very nice video.

Includes Lanyard.

I got mine for $109.00 and free shipping during Newegg shell shocker. As usual, Newegg shipments arrive next day or second day.

I took a few photos and was able to view them in seconds on my computer via included usb cable.

Cons: No case, but I picked up a very nice tough shell case at Unclaimed baggage for $1.

Does not come with the micro hdmi cable. Has flyer to register for free micro hdmi cable after you register your camera online, but I haven't seen it yet nor did I get a register e-mail to get the free cable. Also requires shipping and handling for free cable. Not sure how much that is, or why I haven't gotten a request from them. Newegg has a cable for $8.99, so I doubt a free cable from Kodak would be cheaper than that.

I can't take any eggs away from this camera, because it is just so well made.

Other Thoughts: Remote is extra and I am thinking of buying one to try.
Photos are 5.1 megapixel and are a fixed size. You'll have to resize on your computer, if you need to get a smaller file size.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat!

Pros: Amazing ability to shoot in high def; extremely portable; comfortable feel while holding; dust proof, shock resistant, water proof!!

Cons: None so far, will be taking this to las vegas at the end of the month to shoot a ride along in a nascar.

Other Thoughts: Easy to setup, software is easy to install. Perfect for someone looking to buy their first handy cam.

5 out of 5 eggsDecent Camera

Pros: Great picture quality, very easy to use, small-fits in your pocket. price/value. Great in or out of water.
I couldn't be happier with this camera. Got mine on sale so price was right. Wet dry, where ever. Took it to Disney water park, got every ride, perfect sound and all.
Word of caution, true for any small video. When recording try to stay put and not swing the camera around too much, move to new scenes slowly and stop, otherwise crazy shakey on the playback.

Cons: None, really

Other Thoughts: It does record the sound under the water. Need to watch out for the sound recording after it is wet, can get a bit muffled out of the water, until it drys out.
