To meet user demands for a fast EF-S zoom lens, Canon has specially designed a new lens with a large aperture of f/2.8 for select Canon Digital SLR cameras. The large circular aperture produces a shallow depth-of-field, creating background blur that draws attention to the photographic subject. The lens construction includes UD and aspherical elements, which deliver impressive image quality throughout the entire zoom range. Image Stabilizer lens groups shift to compensate for camera movement so that the image appears steady on the image plane, ensuring clear, crisp images, even in dim light. With a Ring-type USM, inner focusing and new AF algorithms, this lens achieves autofocus quickly and quietly, and with full-time mechanical manual focusing, manually adjusting the focus is possible even in AF mode.

4 out of 5 eggsBe careful

Pros: Very sharp when adjusted

Cons: Seems to have very high level of defects.

Other Thoughts: I bought a lens from Newegg in September and was very disappointed by quality. All the images were blurry and I had hard time getting a sharp image. When experimenting with a tripod I noticed that turning the stabilizer off made my lens take much better pictures. I still had my 30 days replacement, so I had Newegg to replace it and they didn't want to send a new item before they receive the defective one, so I had to spend my late September Hawaii vacation without the lens.
The new lens didn't have a problem with the stabilizer but I was still disappointed as I didn't see images "pop" as described by other owners. I couldn't really see a difference between 17-55 and my old kit lens which was frustrating. The images were soft and sometimes completely out of focus. I was blaming it on my camera being slightly frontfocused and 2.8 exposure. I switched to use center point focusing at all times but images were still just ok, I though the lens doesn't worth the money I paid for it. At some point, I found a good deal and bought a new camera hoping that it was an issue with my camera and lens will work better but the pictures with the new camera weren't better.
Finally, I sent my lens to the Canon service center and got it back yesterday. Man, what a difference! Only now I realized how good this lens is! The repair report said that they replaced autofocusing mechanism and lens assembly! I am looking forward to try it this weekend!

Verdict: Two lenses shipped by Newegg were defective. Beware! I don't know if it's Canon quality issues or incorrect handling by Newegg...

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Magnificent lens, does the job for a good price. Sharp at most apertures, slightly soft at 2.8. Fast focus, very versatile.

Cons: Will not work on full-frame sensors (5D, 1D). It will leave you wanting more if you expect to use it for fashion (runway) photography where you need a tele but that is NOT what this lens is for.

Other Thoughts: If you need a good wide but need to maintain a certain level of zoom, get this lens, you will not regret it. I use nothing else for social events.

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic Lens

Pros: Tack sharp, IQ is very good, extremely fast focus, F/2.8 at all zoom settings, very good build quality for a non-L lens, bokeh is very nice

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: This lens does carry a high price tag for an EF-S design. However, you will not find an EF-S lens that performs better than this one. It is F/2.8 across the zoom range and this is invaluable for people that like taking photos using a shallow depth of field. It is extremely sharp and colors are fantastic. Bokeh is butter smooth too.

While not an "L" lens, this one outperforms many of them under, or near, its price range. This lens has far exceeded my wife's and my expectations. It may be pricey but it delivers a lot for that price.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat price for great lens!

Pros: Drop in price compared to other retailers
Delivered new & as advertised in decent packaging

Lens itself is TACK sharp for crop sensor body.
Low ISO in indoor shots/low light
Solid build

Cons: Slow holiday shipping by newegg (in contrast to their routine fast delivey; I ordered Wed prior to Thanksgiving, UPS had it in my city by Friday AM, actual delivery Monday PM)

Newegg does not sell hood or decent UV filter (had to buy from other retailer)

4 out of 5 eggsGreat optics, mediocre package

Pros: The resolution on my T2i at a pixel level is quite impressive at all focal lengths, and even wide open. It is quite a step up from the kit lens. It is bigger, but not obtrusive. I still use it without a strap. This can stay on my camera 95% of the time.

Cons: The zoom action is notchy at the wide end. It feels cheaper than the kit lens in this sense.

Other Thoughts: I would buy it again in a second, but Canon probably could have done a little better in the packaging at this price point.

5 out of 5 eggsBest walk-around lens for crop bodies

Pros: Fast
Effective IS
Nice size/weight

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: It's basically the 24-70 2.8L for crop bodies.
I bought mine used a year ago with a few specs of dust on the inner elements that are absolutely un-noticeable in pictures - so the sealing issue may be a bit overrated. I used to have the 24-70 but it was too heavy for the Rebel XSi I had at the time, and 24mm is just not wide enough.

I'm not knocking it for being pricey; if Canon painted a red stripe on it nobody would care. It's extremely sharp, allows me to take pictures in ridiculously low light, and the shallow depth of field is invaluable.

Beyond the low light capabilities, there's just no substitute for the shallow depth of

5 out of 5 eggsShould have bought it sooner!

Pros: I just took pictures of the milky way!

Heavy - so I'll get more of a workout carrying it. (this is a pro for me, maybe a con for you)

Makes video look so good! I played some 720P 60fps and 1080p 30fps recordings shot through this lens on my 119" screen and the improvement over the kit lens is incredible. The IS creates smooth video even while I was walking around, and the picture was perfect.

Large aperture means flash is not often needed except as a fill in bright sunlight. Aperture only closes to 22.

Focus is very fast, very quiet.
I love the manual-focus ring even with AF on.

Cons: Hard to zoom in smoothly when recording video.
costs $$$
Will it get dust inside?
T2i built-in flash is partially obscured at 17mm zoom (will be much more when I get my lens hood, so it must be time to buy an off-camera flash)
Vignetting is noticeable in some photos. Software correctable.

Other Thoughts: Using T2i, with or without Zeikos filters. Protected my investment with a Pelican case.

Is it worth so much more than the kit lens, even to a sharp novice? YES.

Newegg sent me a lens that had obviously been opened before - there was a fingerprint on the case. There was even a previous customer's RMA information attached! The lens did not have the CD or all of the instructions. I called Newegg and they advance-shipped me a new one and paid for return shipping of the old one. Glad they fixed the issue, but remember folks, inspect your shipments carefully- it wasn't that obvious!

3 out of 5 eggsA Convenient Lens

Pros: 1. Very convenient design of the F2.8 from 17mm to 55mm. One can zoom in and out without affecting the aperture.
2. The F2.8 is very useful in dim room.
3. 55mm+F2.8 is also very good for portrait purpose. The out focus part is soft.
4. 17mm end is very good for landscape shooting.

Cons: 1. Over-priced, at least in my opinion. Fair price is ~$850 to me.
2. Be careful of the image quality! This lens seems had qutie sloppy quality control (probably that's why it has no "L" mark). Some lens may have premium quality as a L lens, some may behave no better than 18-55mm. I had tried two of them and made a side-by-side comparison and found they had obvious difference in image quality. I kept the copy with better quality, but it's still not as good as a L one.
3. Heavy, 645g -- two cans of coke, almost.
4. The zoom displacement is too long, very easy to suck dust inside the lens. Like a vacuum :-(

Other Thoughts: I like to shoot landscape and portrait both. It save me a lot of trouble from switching between 18-55mm and 50 F1.8. Also, the CA is better than 18-55mm. So, if you really like both landscape and portrait and don't mind hang two cans of coke (the lens weighs 645g) on the camera, the lens is good for you.
