4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: This lens has been very useful so far. The zoom lock is a great idea and a feature that I wish more of my zoom lenses had.

Cons: The length of the lens is a bit unwieldy, especially when zoomed to the maximum.

Other Thoughts: This not the highest quality lens available but very adequate for intermediate or advanced hobbyist use.

1 out of 5 eggsCompletely let down

Pros: When it works the image quality is great and the zoom is fantastic

Cons: This telephoto lens has continuously not functioned properly since i began using it. When attached gives me a sensor error "Err 01 Communications between the camera and lens is faulty. Clean the lens contacts". This thing is BRAND new, there is no way its dirty, I've checked to ensure its clean and i don't even want to risk trying to clean it yet, I can hear the unit readjusting its self, twitching and even in the view finder the image stutters around. I'm forced to turn the camera off and on to get it to connect again to even take a picture. But after reading the manual and looking online I'm now sure this was a total dud. The other lense has worked fine and its what i've primarily used which is why i didn't get a chance to test this one very much to find this defect. I simply want a working lense for the amount that i paid for it

Other Thoughts: This was part of a big package that newegg offered for this camera and at the time i thought i got a great deal. Now i can see why it was so cheap, The Canon camera it's self is great and the stock lens that comes with it is fine, which tells me its the this bigger lens who is defective and not something else.

Please reach out to me Canon or Newegg, I've been a very VERY long time customer to both of you and I'm simply looking to get a working product

5 out of 5 eggsCome on, people! Rate it right!

Pros: Excellent alternative to L lenses, and gets an amazing 480mm focal length on APS-C camera bodies.

Very sharp, quick autofocus with high accuracy, and needs little manual tweaking. Fairly rugged for a polymer shell. Great low light performance and works great for long shots, long exposures with ND filters.

Cons: Other reviewers. If you are rating, you don't take two eggs off because of stock or shipping issues. You are trashing the reputation of a brilliant lens for no fault of Canon!

Probably the loudest ultrasonic motor. It is quiet compared to the non-USM equipped lenses, but can be heard. Thank G*d I use off-camera mics for video. (I can't believe you just made me edit that...)

Have to use a hood, as tulips will rotate and be ineffective.

Other Thoughts: I didn't buy this from Newegg, it came in a kit with my Canon 60D. I didn't even expect to use it (it was kind of a free extra with the purchase) but I am so in love with its performance that it has turned into my primary still shot choice. GET A HOOD SHIELD FOR IT, it enhances daylight shots with low sun by preventing over exposure.

2 out of 5 eggsDecent Lens

Pros: This is a 4 Egg Lens* (see cons)

Has AF/MF, IS, and USM**.

70-300mm Telephoto Zoom Lens

No lens creep.

Cons: *I bought it on Black Friday, Tuesday it was out of stock and they dropped it $100. It was back in stock on Thursday. -2eggs for New Egg

**USM is pretty loud.
Lenses rotate as you zoom and focus.

Other Thoughts: Lens lock is for transporting only, but then again no lens creep.

This lens is big; a little more than the diameter of a Pringles Can and about 8" long.

Works with my CANON T3i but 200-300 focus takes a while, especially in LiveView

5 out of 5 eggsExtremely Sharp

Pros: This Lense is one of canons little hidden gems. It is extremely sharp with excellent contrast and color saturation. I own 5 canon lenses and this is by far the sharpest. I considered buying the canon 70-200 F/4L and borrowed one but the only advantage I found of the 70-200 was that the focus was slightly faster. I took dozens of pictures with both lenses and compaired the two at 100% crop and sometimes the 70-300 was sharper and sometimes the 70-200 was sharper. I am by no means trying to knock the 70-200, its an incredible lense and great value. In my case I decided to keep the 70-300 even with cost not a factor. The 70-300 obviously has the extra 100mm of zoom range, and IS of the 70-300mm vs continous F4 kinda cancled each other out. You will not be disappointed with this lense. Many of my best photos are with this lense and the shapness is extremely impressive. If you are trying to decide between the 70-200 F4L and this lense you cant go wrong either way.

Cons: None that I have found and I have had this lense for two years. Its traveled around the country on a 10,000 mile camping trip and it even fell about 5 feet onto a thin carpet floor with no problems.

Other Thoughts: This is a lens I will never get rid of. Super sharp and all around a great lense. Build quality is excellent. I have had this lense 2 years and It gets very frequent use still no zoom creep. If you buy this lens it will quickly become your favorite. This lense is great for everything from wildlife to portraits. I cant say enought good things about this lens.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent lens, great price!

Pros: Lens is excellent. Has a good feel to it, and takes very nice and crisp images. I am new to DSLR, but Canon makes it very easy to take outstanding images!

I like to take pictures of nature, and with the zoom lens I don't disturb the subject matter.

Lens is quick to focus, I've not noticed it to be noisy. IS works well, reducing the need for a tripod. However, on a long zoom it is nice to have the added stability of the tripod.

Cons: None that I can tell.

Other Thoughts: Couple this lens with a T3i, and a Pixma Pro9000 Mark will never need to 'buy' pictures again. Printing with the whole canon system is unbelievable. Prints jump off the paper!

3 out of 5 eggsGood if use manual focus

Pros: Good build quality, Good optical performance, not too big.

Cons: Auto focus is poor from 200mm to 300mm zoom.

Other Thoughts: The lens produces good pictures but there is one very notable problem. When zoomed from 200mm to 300mm the autofocus is not at all accurate. This is serious enough that I will not use AF when zoomed in this range. I get very nice, sharp pictures even at 300mm but only with manual focus. I have verified the problem is with the lens and not with my 40D camera. MF is tedious and takes time so you will miss some shots when zoomed out. I have the patience for MF but many people won't. I recommend the lens only if you’re willing to use MF above 200mm.

4 out of 5 eggsGood for the price

Pros: Long focal length, F-stop that matches the new L-series lens without the added cost. Build quality is much better than the cheaper 300mm zooms on offer, plus this one has IS, which is great at the longer range when light is less than optimal (seemingly all the freakin time).

Cons: The IS motor is loud to me. The focus seems to hunt more than the 18-135mm stock lens on the 60D. The front element rotates with focus. All of these contributed to the 1-egg-off. Images are not nearly as crisp as the 70-300mm f/4-5.6L lens, BUT at roughly 1/3 the cost, this is forgivable to say the least.

Other Thoughts: I've had great times with this one photographing nature and wildlife. Make sure the light is good-ish and you will get some nice pics. Sweet spot seems to be f/8 but as always, your mileage may vary. I will be trying auto racing soon, so we'll see how it performs.

I held a cheaper 75-300mm and it felt just that - cheaper. I'm very happy with the purchase but will upgrade when time and money permit. For now, I'll have fun with what I have.
