Bully: Scholarship Edition PC Game

"Troubled" schoolboy, Jimmy Hopkins, has arrived at the prestigious Bullworth Academy, and his reputation has preceded him. He immediately finds himself the subject of bullying – not only from his fellow students, but from the teaching staff as well. Jimmy must navigate his way through the classes and the cliques which include the Bullies, Nerds, Preppies, Greasers and Jocks along with interactions with the residents of the city of Bullworth. Based on the same engine as Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto, the NPC character interaction is fully fleshed out with no two characters alike.

The game is broken up into six chapters. Jimmy must earn respect by doing tasks for various characters and if he actually attends class, he will also earn abilities that will help him as he takes on the system. Tasks will also earn him money. Eight new missions have been added to this version of the game along with four new classes. Classes are presented as minigames.

There are also multi-player minigames which allow you to challenge your friends - including a bike race through town where the riders attempt to knock each other off their bikes along the way. In another challenge, you must defeat a Preppie in a boxing game. And, of course, there are plenty of opportunities for a little mayhem as Jimmy fights to defend himself and oppressed innocents. With slingshots, marbles, stink bombs and even a spud gun at his disposal, Jimmy can stand up to the bullies.

5 out of 5 eggsBully

Pros: Good performance and seems quite stable with the 1.2 patch. Great price. Great story. Wide variety of stuff to do. Fun mini games. Oh, and no DRM.

Cons: Sound problems (everyone talking at once, music cutting in and out). Limited save slots, other console annoyances. Problems targeting the correct person during fights.

Other Thoughts: This is an incredibly fun game. It's too bad that bugs and other problems have kept people from enjoying it. I have quite a few hours into the game so far, with no problems except the cons listed above. I'm glad I didn't miss out on this, as I was hesitant to buy it with all the bad reviews. Enough typing, must get back to the game.

5 out of 5 eggsNew patch makes this worth a look?

Pros: Rockstar finally issued a patch recently that seems to do the trick for me. I'm glad that I waited! I gather from recent posts on Steam forums that isolated issues are still possible, but I've been playing this several hours a day this week and it looks and plays beautifully.

I fine the game itself fun and amusing with a lot of varied tasks to do and a lot of personality, certainly equal to the current discounted price. Rockstar usually produces quality games, and I consider the production qualities above average.

Cons: The controls are not that bad for what is typically a console game, but I am thinking of hooking up a controller to make things a little easier on myself.

Other Thoughts: The v1.200 patch addresses the following "Compatibility fix that will improve streaming performance, as well as a fix for random lock ups and crashes affecting 64-bit Windows with over 2 GB of RAM." Just google "Rockstar games bully support"

You can get this for about ten bucks on PS2, but I just tend not to use my consoles.

I'm a long way from completing this game, so I can't honestly say there will be no "game stopping issue," but as I said, at the current price I've been very happy with what I got.

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: It is an interesting idea for a game, and is entertaining for a while, but you can't go wrong with the price. Good alternative for kids who aren't old enough for GTA.

Cons: I lost interest after a few hours of playing, and the games you're forced to play in class get old and tedious after a while.
The keyboard controls are ridiculous, especially in the menus. Very poor job porting it to PC.

Other Thoughts: I have not experienced any glitches that others have mentioned, so they may have been fixed with patches.

5 out of 5 eggsBully~!!!

Pros: 1) Great storyline.
2) It's Rockstar.

Cons: 1) The mouse controls can be annoying during the fights. Occasionally, you will end up attack or target the wrong person.
2) The game crashes every few hours, just like in the GTA series.

Other Thoughts: Beat the game in a few days...... There were a lot of small interesting side missions.

1 out of 5 eggsFreezes during first into.

Pros: Newegg shipped on time as always.

Cons: The game doesn't work. I have windows 7 x64 bit, which shouldn't matter. It hangs up during the first or second intro scene like a few others have said. I wish I could return it.

Other Thoughts: Don't waste your money on this garbage.

1 out of 5 eggsSeems cool, If it would work....

Pros: looks neat, decent graphics if not totally cutting edge. Seems like a neat premise, was looking forward to playing it until.........

Cons: The game crashes on the first introduction everytime. Second loading screen after the initial 2 cut scenes hung forever, downloaded the patch and that allowed me to get past the 2nd load screen and get back downstairs, opened the door and *crash to desktop*. I can understand buggy software, but this *really* seems like total and utter junkware. I'll probably try to mess with it a bit over the next couple of days trying in various compatibility modes and lower resolutions, etc, etc, but...I really shouldn't have too, even if I only paid x amount for the game.

Other Thoughts: I'm definitely of the same mind as one of the previous reviewers, I also bought GTA4 and was unhappy with having to log into 3 different accounts just to play. Rockstar needs to start concentrating on games again and being cutting edge, instead of trying to cater to the console crowd and games for windows. If they don't they can count on losing me as a customer......permanently.

1 out of 5 eggsCan't get it to run

Pros: I don't know yet

Cons: Does not get past the intro screen. Computer gives me an error saying Bully requires a DirectX 9.0 sound card to run, then crashes to desktop. I got new drivers for my on-board today, dated 2 weeks ago, Rockstar's patch, as well as a new build of Direct X, still doesn't work. Searching the net for this error turns up quite a few hits, none with real fixes. Add-on sound, on-board sound, doesn't matter. People have tried swapping between on-board and add-on and still can't get past the "DX9 sound card required" error.

Other Thoughts: I'll try it on my other PC when I get a chance, but just wanted to throw this out there since it's apparently a common problem. Buyer beware. Should've just bought the PS2 version; I would've been well into the game by now.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat after the patch

Pros: Lot's to do, open-ended game play, good story.

Cons: It wouldn't run on my Vista 64 system until I downloaded the patch. Even then, I got hung up on the football challenge. The fix was to run msconfig, change the advanced boot options to be less than 2 gb of ram, and reboot.

Other Thoughts: Graphics show their age, but the game play more than makes up for it.

2 out of 5 eggsSoso

Pros: It is an interesting and unique game filled with odd humor. The gameplay isn't too bad, but could be better. I bet the game would of been a lot better if they would of given it an M title instead and added more graphic content. Not really too preverted, but they could get away with some more realistic jokes.

Cons: The game runs like a dog on modern computers because it's obviously made to run utilizing a single CPU core. Considering the single core minimum requirements for this game are actually pretty high (3.0ghz.. which I think is stupid) you really have to have the high end of a pc to run this game good.
Kind of like running the sims 2 on a 2.3ghz quad core
There are also a lot of graphical glitches in this game are can get annoying.

1 out of 5 eggsThe marketing and distribution of this product should be illegal.

Pros: None; game crashes so fast it is impossible to play in order to discover any pros.

Cons: I have really been looking forward to playing this game for quite some time. I loved the idea of a GTA style sandbox game where I could stand up for the oppressed and not have to kill everyone in sight. What a soul-crushing bummer this release turned out to be.

Characters pop in and out of nowhere, it is full of crash bugs, textures are missing leading to invisible floors and walls, and it locks into a never ending load screen when you are assigned your first mission.

I have tried a number of suggestions to fix these problems on my own since Rockstar seems to have no interest in fixing this giant bag of stink, but in my experience, this game is simply unplayable. Understand that if you buy this product in its current incarnation, you will be throwing your money away. Buy the original Bully for PS2. It is ten dollars cheaper and already tested and stable.

Other Thoughts: Shame on Rockstar for doing this to its customers. I feel personally betrayed. This outrage, coupled with the buggy, unstable, bloat-ware infested port of GTA4 for the PC seals the deal for me. I will never spend another dime on any Rockstar product ever again. And this is from a guy who has faithfully bought both the PC and console versions of every GTA game plus a number of other releases from Rockstar, even the awful ones like State of Emergency.

Knowingly selling a product that doesn't work to the public should be illegal, and I just hope that someone starts a class action lawsuit against Rockstar for fraud. In fact, I think I am going to go look up the number for my state's Attorney General's office.
