5 out of 5 eggsWorks great with Tomato by Shibby on 3500lv2

This review is from: NETGEAR WNR3500L-100NAS 802.11b/g/n RangeMax Wireless-N Gigabit router up to 300Mbps/ DD-WRT Open Source support/ USB x1

Pros: Bought this with the purpose of flashing different firmware. Worked right out the box with stock firmware did minor testing then went straight to flashing 3rd party firmware. I'm using Tomato by Shibby tomato-Netgear-3500Lv2-K26USB-1.28.RT-N5x--131-VPN . After the update, I did a router reset (physically button press) and then in the gui, I did a factory reset that clears the NVRAM. (its not the traditional 30-30-30) but I think it gets the job done just as well. A few config changes for my needs and a few reboots and I'm back on the Internet in no time.

I am not able to test the wireless N performance as I have a legacy device in my network that only runs in G. However, I average about 17Mbps (megabits) down in my home network on G. It is a ~6Mbs over my old G router so I consider that a win. I have a NAS in my network and now I reach the max throughput of the drives instead of the max throughput of the network. Very pleased with my purchase. As I did more in Tomato Firmware, I'm sure I will find even more hidden gems this router is able to do.

Cons: This device is not free but it is the best bang for your buck. Print server function does work, but it is not a walk in the park. Google "tomato Configure Printer in Windows" and you will find your answer for Windows devices. That hopefully points you in the right direction. Once again, this will require WORK. But it DOES work. Its more of a critique of the firmware than it is the device itself.

Other Thoughts: This router will stay with me as long as it is stable and as long as it works and as long as Gigabit connections are not maxed out. I do not regret my purchase one bit.

5 out of 5 eggsJust as expected

This review is from: NETGEAR WNR3500L-100NAS 802.11b/g/n RangeMax Wireless-N Gigabit router up to 300Mbps/ DD-WRT Open Source support/ USB x1

Pros: Gigabit Ethernet
Compact Size
Wireless capable

Cons: Defaults to 145mbps (wireless)
Not Dual Band (you did read it wasn't right?)

Other Thoughts: I've had the chance to stay around and go through 2 different setups by roommates. 1st person had their own router (or router-modem?) and using wireless I've never experienced (gaming) lag like this before (from a private connection.)

2nd roommate used the ISPs Router-Modem (and had faster internet speeds) and while the situation improved a bit, still not quite up to when I used ethernet.

By myself with this router, TV & Laptop connected by ethernet (CAT5, CAT7 respectively), Wii U wireless all I can say is awesome. Either you need ethernet for reliable gaming connection or NETGEAR is yet to disappoint. Works better than 5Ghz and is an overall pleasant experience. You should also take the time to change passphrases and work with the utilities to prevent unwanted guests from logging in/using your wireless router.

Even though we're moving to a wire-free, more mobile world, ethernet/wired connections are still the way to go for performance/reliability (similar to desktop vs laptop.)

1 out of 5 eggsIt's Junk

This review is from: NETGEAR WNR3500L-100NAS 802.11b/g/n RangeMax Wireless-N Gigabit router up to 300Mbps/ DD-WRT Open Source support/ USB x1

Pros: Gigabit works...

Cons: Wireless networking does not work in N mode (150 mbps) or g mode (54mbps), instead, you must turn off n mode, and then you get b speeds (11mbps). Curiously, you can get two devices connected both downloading at this speed. Also curiously, you can get b speeds with local traffic (streaming from one computer to another).

I've researched this and TONS of people have this problem.

Research has also revealed this router still has the same problem when DD-WRT installed, and that this router is also prone to bricking when you install DD-WRT.

I requested a replacement, and the replacement has all the same problems as the first one did, and now I'm outside my 45 day refund, so I will just keep RMAing this till either newegg offers me a refund, or I get one that randomly works.

Other Thoughts: Very upset with Netgear on this one. Their 54GL has worked great for years.

My old Buffalo gets the full b speeds, testing out at over 25mbps, which exceeds my advertised speeds.

1 out of 5 eggsServes its purpose, that's it.

This review is from: NETGEAR WNR3500L-100NAS 802.11b/g/n RangeMax Wireless-N Gigabit router up to 300Mbps/ DD-WRT Open Source support/ USB x1

Pros: While functioning properly, it gives a fairly decent network speed multiple devices. Easy setup.

Cons: After about six months, wireless connections would constantly drop multiple times throughout the day. If the wireless network wasn't dropping, it would instead restart itself. I'm extremely disappointed with how this product turned out, and even more frustrated by the fact that I've made the poor decision of hanging on to this thing.

Other Thoughts: While this did serve as a decent router for a short amount of time, I do reside in an apartment where the network traffic is fairly high and interference is ridiculous. There are also approximately 4-7 devices connected to this router at any given time during the day. Furthermore, I also tend to be spending a majority of my time with multiplayer gaming, along with another person in my household.
If you want a router to serve its purpose with easy setup, by all means, go with this one. If you are someone who has multiple people in your household, depending on the type of usage the household relies on, I suggest looking somewhere else.

2 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: NETGEAR WNR3500L-100NAS 802.11b/g/n RangeMax Wireless-N Gigabit router up to 300Mbps/ DD-WRT Open Source support/ USB x1

Pros: It isn't crashing/disconnecting all the time

Cons: Will not work wirelessly in n mode (145 and 300 mbps) giving download speeds of only a few dozen kB/s. Curiously, the LAN works at speeds of 1 MB/s in n mode (this is still ridiculously slow), so it must be a firmware issue. Confirmed that many people have this issue.

Other Thoughts: Haven't been able to test out gigbit yet, waiting to get another computer in here. If THAT doesn't work, I'm returning this and getting a 54GL.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks as Advertised

This review is from: NETGEAR WNR3500L-100NAS 802.11b/g/n RangeMax Wireless-N Gigabit router up to 300Mbps/ DD-WRT Open Source support/ USB x1

Pros: - Works at advertised speeds
- Physically not very large, easy to hide
- USB port on rear to act as network drive
- Signal strength sufficient

Cons: - Out of box was only set to 150 mbps (ultimately speed is decided by your carrier)
- Signal not the best. Still much better than previous AT&T router though.
- Stand feels a little flimsy

Other Thoughts: Ultimately my cons were kind of picky. This router supported a skype call last night with no drops or major freezing, and I am running multiple devices on it already. Very happy with the product and the price I got it for.

5 out of 5 eggsUpdate 4.5 years of use

This review is from: NETGEAR WNR3500L-100NAS 802.11b/g/n RangeMax Wireless-N Gigabit router up to 300Mbps/ DD-WRT Open Source support/ USB x1

Pros: Price, performance, reliability, speed

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: This is an update 4.5 years after ordering from this router from Newegg. It has performed flawlessly. I prefer to use Cat 6 connectors, but when friends stay with me, the wireless capability is perfect. Now that I have a Smart TV, the wireless capability is really useful. I highly recommend this product even though it's been around 5 years.
