3 out of 5 eggsdd-wrt support is misleading

Pros: Good speed, stability and works with a USB hub for multiple external drives

Cons: There was only 1 version of open source software I could find that was compatible with this version - TomatoUSB. There wasn't anything available for DD-WRT which is a shame because the hardware is fairly good.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello,

You can get in contact with our support team at any time-- they'll be glad to answer any questions, or they can help assist you if needed. They can be reached at support.netgear.com.

5 out of 5 eggsCorrection, update

Pros: Same

Cons: Same

Other Thoughts: Correction: I barely played with the stock * NETGEAR * firmware, etc...

This WNR-3500L is similar to the ASUS RT-N16 that was also on my list of candidates, I went with the Netgear.

I'm still very happy with my WNR-3500L v2. No problems with Tomato firmware or with my router.

It runs a good bit warmer than the WNR-2000 I mentioned previously.

Further, the 3500L weighs more, has a bigger supply (18 vs. 12W), and has a four-piece case, w/ removable foot, compared with the 2000's two-piece case w/fixed foot. The two Netgear routers look identical but they're quite different under the skin.

5 out of 5 eggsResearch what you can.

Pros: This is a really nice router for the money.

I received v2 of the hardware, which was my preference. I've seen reports saying v1 has better antennas despite having lower-specced chips. Some people may be receiving v1; I don't know. You can't really select which one you'll get; it'd be good if you could choose.

Cons: Just to be clear, the WNR3500L v2 still has a "work in progress" notation by it's DD-WRT database entry, as of this writing. I would not risk flashing DD-WRT firmware onto v2 unless I were knowledgeable in un-bricking.

I prefer Tomato firmware, so it wasn't an issue for me. I mention DD-WRT for those who intend to use that firmware. It may not be a good idea.

Other Thoughts: I barely played with the stock ASUS firmware before flashing Tomato Shibby build. I did experience odd behavior at first. After resetting via the pinhole switch, everything worked perfectly.

I recently purchased the Netgear WNR2000 router. It's fine, but this model gives you a lot more for fifteen dollars more.

5 out of 5 eggsgreat tomato router

Pros: WNR3500L-100NAS v2 (128 MB flash) works only with tomato firmware (I used Shibby tomato firmware;
works great - probably the best tomato firmware). dd-wrt for WNR3500L-100NAS v2 is "under construction" and I am not sure when it will be available.
Tomato firmware is available only for Broadcom chipset routers (Netgear, Asus, Linksys). Before you buy a router you have to check if the particular
hardware revision of the a router is supported by dd-wrt or tomato. Router vendors change the chipsets quite often without listing this info in specs.

Cons: none

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic.

Pros: Absolutely lovely. Blows my old router completely out of the water. Wifi has good coverage, machine has a ton of memory. Open source firmware support is the primary reason I made this purchase and it made good on that claim.

Cons: In my head, I always read the model WNR3500L as "Wiener3500L." Not a good purchase if you are immature.

Other Thoughts: It's apparently not marked anywhere on the page, but this is the v2 of this model. That's not actually an issue, but when I obtained it, I went looking for some custom firmware and almost flashed some v1 firmware on it which could have potentially ended poorly.

The v2 model, unlike a lot of revised router models, actually has better specs than the v1.

3 out of 5 eggsUpdate! >:(

Pros: Router works great over cat5 but...

Cons: Wifi is Slow as heck again. The ONLY WAY i can get the wifi to speed up again is by using WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES], which is Extremely annoying because not only is it an out of date encryption but it does not even support type N speeds!!! >:(

Other Thoughts: The entire reason that i bought this was for the quick throughput Type N-300mbps/Gigabit and now i cant even use the Type n wifi. I always liked Netgear routers but unless there is an update that fixes this soon, ill never buy a netgear AGAIN!

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Murphyslaw,

We are very sorry about the slow wifi speeds you are experiencing.

Have you tried upgrading to the latest firmware?

5 out of 5 eggsUpdate your Firmware!!

Pros: Ran with Old u-verse system and it worked great!.. Quick, brainless setup, Good looking design.

Cons: When i switched to Comcast with a SURFboard SB6141, i was told i was going to get 50Mbit down, i did over Cat5... but the wifi was getting several errors and it was getting very annoying. I decided to check for a firmware update and it fixed ALL the annoying errors.

Other Thoughts: Just to help anyone who has the problem, the router would constantly tell me i could not make any changes while it was configuring a WPS setup. That's not even possible considering how much i hate WPS. It also fixed the snail speed wifi. Might be the Motorola Surfboard, might be comcasts fault. Not sure

Hope it helps someone! :P

1 out of 5 eggsUpdate

Pros: Nice looking.

Cons: Random wireless speed drops....No where near the advertised speed. Advertised 300 Mbps, averaged 52 Mbps...

Other Thoughts: Update to my original review...After about two weeks the wireless speeds would drop from 72Mbps to 1Mbps..Called the tech line and tried to walk through numerous settings to troubleshoot. Ended up hooking back up my old and trusty G router, which runs at the same speed at this one did when it was "working"

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Zak,

If you would like to take the WNR3500L back out and give it another try; we'd love to help. Please contact us at newegg@netgear.com-- provide any case numbers you received from support, as well as a copy and paste of your review.

1 out of 5 eggsDo not buy this router

Pros: None

Cons: Comcast receives thousands of error codes from this router. It slows down the speed of your ISP to a crawl. Netgear said that they know about the problem and they are working on it.

Other Thoughts: Try DDWRT if you can figure it out.
