1 out of 5 eggsBought 2 and both died

Pros: They look nice and work OK at first

Cons: I submitted this to Netgear support for RMA: Both switches started acting up around the same time. Ran OK for 2-3 months, then would start running very slow. Rebooting the switch would resolve it, but the problem would return. Started having to reboot them numerous times daily. Now one won't power on, and the other one has constant blinking lights on all 16 ports with no cables plugged in.

Other Thoughts: Replaced it with an HP Procurve gigabit 16-port switch, which was only about sixty bucks more. It's lightning fast, and I am going to assume it will last longer. Attempting to get these 2 replaced under warranty. They'll make decent emergency/loaner switches. These are the only Netgear switches I have ever had an issue with. Usually, they are rock solid.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Small and sturdy construction. The port mirroring, traffic meter and cable tester all work well.

Cons: Need to install configuration utility on a Windows PC on the same subnet. WinPcap and Adobe AIR are also required. The utility is very lightweight and responsive, at least.

It does not support Rate Limiting on different ports. It is all ports or none. Kind of sucks as we got the switch to throttle traffic to specific servers on our network. The Port Priority seems like a better-than-nothing option, but does not offer the same level of control.

Other Thoughts: Still a fantastic switch for the price, though.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Value

Pros: Compact Size
All metal construction
Small, lightweight power brick
Has some limited management capability

Cons: Need a Netgear app to communicate with the switch, but it is very responsive. A lot better than their low end smart switch web interfaces.

Other Thoughts: I have been a fan of netgear unmanaged switches. They are compact and very sturdily built. I don't think you will find a physically smaller switch that has some management capability.

It is nice to be able to look at error rates on ports. I haven't tried to use any other advanced features to can't comment on that.

The cable length feature is kind of neat. It will tell you the length of an unterminated cable attached to a port. You can tell the difference between an empty port and one that is wired, but doesn't have an active device on it.
