5 out of 5 eggsGreat little switch

Pros: Worked flawlessly with cisco SFP gear into a 6509 chassis.

Cons: VLAN tagging is a bit of a kludge and seems to be a little "voodoo-ey" to get it to actually work. With a bit of persistence, it came together just fine.

Other Thoughts: Using this to convert fiber to PoE for a small WISP. Easy to get going and manage so far. Very low power usage (about 5 watts with no PoE).

5 out of 5 eggsNice

Pros: I read the review before making my purchase, and I have had no issues so far with this switch. I has plenty of expansion capability for future growth. I have not put this switch to it's fullest ability, nor do I think right now. Only more time will tell me that.

Cons: I know there were complaints about the VLAN tagging. I have not employed that yet, so I cannot comment about the problems mentioned in earlier reviews

Other Thoughts: This switch gave me the expansion I needed as my router is maxed out for ports.

5 out of 5 eggsVery nice POE switch with good features

Pros: Provides POE power
Good features
Features actually work
Good support
Metal case

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Amazing switch for the price. I use features such as static mac tables, port protection, NTP servers, syslog, etc. They all actually work on this switch. I found a firmware bug, submitted a support ticket, anf they included the fix in the next firmware release. Now that's support. Very happy.

1 out of 5 eggsPreconfigured VLANs 2 and 3 - Not Advertised

Pros: Price and almost the functionality for the price

Cons: This switch comes with two vlan's already set. Voice (2) and Video (3). Now if you are like me and have already assigned these vlan id's to other things on your network, you're not going to be happy, because these are hard set in the firmware and you cannot change them.
I contacted tech support at Netgear and was told I would just have to go by different names.
This dis-feature is not documented in the sales literature, and I think a better option for me is to RMA the device.

Other Thoughts: This is an engineering blunder on Netgears part. The manufacture should never assume they know what VLAN Id schema is best for the end user.

4 out of 5 eggsIt works

Pros: Great value for 8 PoE ports. Will power 8 class 2 PoE devices at once. Bought this for my security camera network, each camera draws 4.6W, so it's a perfect fit and a great price for what you get. Most of the other switches in this price range only have 4 PoE ports.

Cons: Management software requires windows.

1 out of 5 eggsDO NOT BUY

Pros: Looks good on paper.

Cons: Garbage reliability.

Other Thoughts: We bought 15 of these to place in small offices. Of the 15, 3 worked out of the box. The other 12 had some combination of dead ports. Lifetime warranty is great, but the cost in labor to swap them out, mail them in, chase the RMA paperwork, etc. is more than the switch is worth. Bad buy.

5 out of 5 eggsGood product

Pros: It works even if you do not set up the device. No need to update the firmware. It runs very well on my server network. I use Netgear for many years and never got any problems.

Cons: N/A.

Other Thoughts: Port one was disabled when I logged on the switch first time. I re-enbaled it then it looks ok now. It is default maybe.

4 out of 5 eggsMisleading PoE Functionatlity

Pros: IF YOU ONLY NEED 3 SIMULTANEOUS PoE 802.3af ports!

Cons: 46W total PoE budget... you have to read between the lines to establish that although this switch it advertised as 8-Port PoE you can only have THREE (3) ports actively drawing PoE power simultaneously.

15.4 x 3 = 46.2W

Other Thoughts: I called Netgear Support and verified this... it's a solid product but if you want full 8-Port 802.3af this is NOT the one.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing Switch For The Price

Pros: Full 8 port Gb POE with 2 GBIC with Lifetime Warranty for under $200 is a steal and I got them at $140 each. Once NewEgg drops them down again I will be buying more and replacing many a switch.

Cons: None to be found...
