1 out of 5 eggsQuality build, bad circuitry or flash/firmware space

This review is from: NETGEAR WNDR4500 N900 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Open Source Router - IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n

Pros: Solid look and feel. Heavy duty enough to not tip over while standing or having cables pull from the back. Strong coverage in an office building, as well as a smaller sized house.

Cons: Loses firmware/corrupted firmware after a power outage. Could no longer use this in a business because of this issue. Brought it home, and still had to reload firmware after every power outage using TFTP. I upgraded to DD-WRT thinking that may solve the problem by overwriting another area of the memory, but it didn't make any difference.

Other Thoughts: Works great until you have a power outage, then you get no router function or WiFi until restoring firmware. As I was using it as an AP, I would still be able to use devices plugged into the switch portion. However, at home I had a Harmony remote connected to it's SSID in a home theater area, so loss of WiFi meant disrupting most of the media functions of the household.

3/4 times restoring the firmware via TFPT would also bring back previous settings. Sometimes not, and I'd have to disconnect it from the LAN, set the IP to my prefered address for an AP, turn off DHCP, and set up wireless all over again.

1 out of 5 eggskeep away

This review is from: NETGEAR WNDR4500 N900 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Open Source Router - IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n

Pros: fast

Cons: The firmware got corrupted in 20 months and I could not get back into the unit to reload the firmware (followed instructions on the internet and there's no way to get back to factory settings). Customer service told me they couldn't help. It seems it is quite common for these models to get their firmware corrupted. I purchased a different brand with a better warranty for the same price. First and last Netgear router I buy.

5 out of 5 eggsGood for over a year

This review is from: NETGEAR WNDR4500 N900 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Open Source Router - IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n

Pros: Dual band has worked terrific. I'm not sure we've ever had to reboot it. Easy setup and has served our department perfectly.

Cons: We're asking a lot to pass through 3 painted steel covered walls. I would like to try relocating the router to get the best coverage for our fire department bays and meeting room.

Other Thoughts: I might be a fool, but we've not even passwd protected the networks. Makes it easiest for our 30 members to connect. Haven't had any problems yet.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat for streaming video.

This review is from: NETGEAR WNDR4500 N900 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Open Source Router - IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n

Pros: I took a step back and began to count all of the devices connected to my wi-fi router. When I did the math, I needed an upgrade! This router had great reviews and seemed a good solution. After installing it, this dual band router has been amazing. 2 Roku's 4 Cell phones, 1 iPod, 1 XBox 360, 2 Kindle Fires, and 2 Laptops connect without a noticeable slowdown.

Cons: No Cons!

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome

This review is from: NETGEAR WNDR4500 N900 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Open Source Router - IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n

Pros: Can throw any traffic at it, bit torrent handled with ease.
Easy interface, didn't need to flash it with a wrt firmware
Powerful signal, like I said no need for a wrt firmware

Cons: Very tall, hard to hide in a cabinet

Other Thoughts: I didn't think I'd use the USB port for an ext drive but I have and love it, turns a cheap hard drive into a general dumping ground for backups and such

5 out of 5 eggsGreat, with DDWRT

This review is from: NETGEAR WNDR4500 N900 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Open Source Router - IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n

Pros: DD-WRT compatible

The first few builds were a bit wonky, but things are working well now.

With DD-WRT, I can run multiple SSIDs on multiple frequencies.

Cons: Stock firmware is garbage

Older model, so it doesn't support the new ac standard, but that makes little difference in most home use circumstances.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat router

This review is from: NETGEAR WNDR4500 N900 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Open Source Router - IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n

Pros: I have owned this router for over 1 year. The setup was easy. It had been rock solid except for the discussion below.

Cons: The only con I have found is that when I have had to do a reset of the router I would lose my internet connection. So although the wireless was enabled I could not connect to the internet without first reloading the firmware. I have since found out that if I just recycle my cable modem while the Router is initializing then I am able to connect to the internet without having to reinstall the firmware. I found this in the NETGEAR genie. It has saved me several hours of time. This only works if you are using a cable modem. I have upgraded my firmware to 1.0.1.38.

Other Thoughts: It would be nice if NETGEAR would describe this in their quick guide.

1 out of 5 eggsLoses firmware every power loss

This review is from: NETGEAR WNDR4500 N900 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Open Source Router - IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n

Pros: Fast when it works

Cons: I have had this router for almost a year, every time the unit loses power the green power light comes back blinking indicating firmware corruption. That requires downloading the newest firmware from Netgear and pushing it to the router using FTP from my laptop. I have done this over half a dozen times in the last year.

The unit is plugged into a decent quality APC UPS and does not generally get unplugged. Just this evening I was rearranging cables and unplugged the router by accident, time for a firmware update. Not my first Netgear router but definitely my last.

3 out of 5 eggsBad Firmware

This review is from: NETGEAR WNDR4500 N900 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Open Source Router - IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n

Pros: Speed, Printshare, ReadySHARE Cloud, etc, etc.

Cons: Firmware corrupts causing Green Light of death, which results in having to reinstall the firmware only to result in the flashing green light after a few days.

Other Thoughts: Found a working and stable DD-WRT that has not resulted in the flashing green light. Yes there is a working DD-WRT even though the site says WIP (Work In Progress). 4 Beta's and one stable. Keep looking, you will find it. Since installing DD-WRT firmware a month ago, the firmware hasn't become corrupted.
