1 out of 5 eggsWow this thing is terrible!

Pros: It turns on and works....sometimes. Easy to use interface - typical Netgear fare.

Cons: Everything else about this thing is terrible! I read the reviews here before I bought it and thought maybe there were configuration errors, lack of firmware updates, or even just isolated instances, but everything everyone said here is true! I almost lost a customer because of this thing, as I sold them on getting a 50 meg connection instead of their old T1 line, and in so doing required a new router to handle the higher WAN throughput. Well I was having DNS resolution issues, connection timeouts, sporatic loading messages on web pages, etc. It was a disaster! Thankfully I had a Zyxel Zywall USG20 firewall handy to replace the Netgear with and all of their problems disappeared! I then brought this back to my office to install as my main router just to see if it was an issue with their network, and it does the same thing to me! I'm about to switch it out now, and as I type this, I have 2 tabs with whirling loading circles because the web page won't load. I updated firmware, wiped to factory defaults, and anything else I could think of that normally gets these things to work, and nothing would fix it! I'm with everyone else here and looking at using just Cisco or ZyXel for my firewalls from now on. I can't trust Netgear anymore, and can't risk losing customers over their buggy products.

Other Thoughts: Just save yourself the trouble and buy something else....anything else!

1 out of 5 eggsNo SSL

Pros: Good connectivity on wired network

Cons: This router does not support SSL VPN in a Microsoft Internet Explorer ver. 11 environment. Netgear admits this and will not commit any resources to find a solution. As stated in other reviews this router is extremely difficult to set up in an IPSEC environment also.
Wireless connectivity is also lost periodically, it is not stable at all. I have now wasted over a month with online email support. Technicians will not read entire emails and communicate appropriately. I have to continually re-ask the question. It has become not worth the effort, what a waste of my clients money and my time. Reconsider Netgear products before you buy.

Other Thoughts: It is amazing to me that Netgear continues selling this router. In my opinion it should be shelved and/or used for a paper weight as state in another review. This router has certainly blemished my opinion of Netgear products so onto Cisco!

1 out of 5 eggsUnstable

Pros: In theory, a great device combining VPN and wireless connectivity. If the device was stable.

Cons: The device is unstable. Periodically, connected devices will lose ethernet connectivity. This includes RDP sessions (across local and VPN), internet sites, and the router's internal management website. The loss occurs on wired and wireless connections. The current firmware version (4.3.0-19) does not address the problem.

Other Thoughts: Netgear is our exclusive network security and switch hardware provider. We own several switches, UTM, and VPN devices. Our experience with this device will not effect future Netgear purchases.

1 out of 5 eggsDon't Buy

Pros: Wireless can handle a small office with many connections well. Rarely does it need to be rebooted because of wireless.

Cons: The web interface is THE most complicated I have ever seen. I have been in IT for 6 years and have used ~20 routers. Planning to use syslog? --Complicated. Planning to use VPN? --Complicated. Even IPSEC is so complicated that I added another router in front (temporarily) to get a needed connection.

Other Thoughts: I would throw this thing away if it wasn't for my boss who insists we keep it--he doesn't configure it!

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Price and Reliability

Cons: If you don't update the firmware you are up the creek.
The interface is not as easy to use as the past versions

Other Thoughts: I have had this unit for over 4 months now and it has been really reliable.
When I first got it it took a couple of hours to get it right. I got frustrated with it and then before I threw it through a wall I decided to update the firm ware. after that it has been very reliable and nothing has needed to be changed,

1 out of 5 eggsHORRIBLE - Stay Away

Pros: None

Cons: Consistently provided poor network performance. Wired connections could not connect to the Internet pages would be incomplete or would be text versions instead of HTML. Long delays. Netgear sent a replacement (after I paid an additional $19.99) and it was the same.

Other Thoughts: I am an IT consultant with 25 years in the industry. I have used Netgear products for many years with great success. This is a bad product!

1 out of 5 eggsA Great Paper Weight

Pros: A good paper weight; never had any issues with papers flying away.

Cons: I had to buy two of these. the first one was for a client, the second was for the same client as a replacement. Continued wireless drop or the router totally locks up. placed the second router into my system for testing since I could not get it to configure at clients location. worked for a bit then the same issues showed it's ugly head, wireless drops or locks up totally. Tried to contact support and that's more useless then the router.

Other Thoughts: Don't buy, should have stayed with the reviews!

1 out of 5 eggsSLOW Menu

Pros: Sturdy metal construction. Wired connections fast and stable.

Cons: Features are VERY confusing. This may be improved is the interface wasn't SO SLOW. Wireless kicked all users off if a hacked droid phone connected to the wireless. (<- read that again and explain that to me.)
Interface SLOW (not connection speed)

Other Thoughts: Interface (browser based) was painfully slow. Menu required drilling down and changed menu options so switching between menus was impossible. I thought I could deal with the complexity since I'm MCSE and CCNA and I could but it took minutes to do simple port restrictions. And when the wireless kicked all users off because of a droid phone, that was it! I put my old router (with less ports) back.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Wan to Lan interface speed

Pros: Compact size, 8 GB ports, Solid metal construction, Feature set. Has been very stable in the 3 months that I have had this firewall.

Cons: As others have noted, it takes a quite a while to reboot this router after changing settings.

Other Thoughts: I had the FVS318G-100NAS for about 5 years and did not have any issues. The FVS318N-100NAS is identical physically but has dual wireless antennas. Functionally this firewall has much greater throughput on the Wan to LAN interface. The FVS318G had only 20 Mbps. I have Comcast cable and discovered that connecting directly to the cable modem gave me about 100 Mbps speed. Called Netgear tech support and they were informed me that my current firewall would not support this speed. I asked for alternatives and they had no suggestions.

So I started researching firewalls that would support these speeds and found that the least expensive were some Sonicwall models but they were in the $400 range and up.

I called Comcast and asked them for guidance. Basically they told me that a switch would work as long as no wireless was involved. I spoke to three different customer support reps and felt that I had a better understanding of networking than they did as I am an IT professional by trade and have a good understanding how networking works and the steps needed to insure security.

So I continued looking and ran across this unit on the Newegg site. I checked the Netgear site to get more in depth specs and had a hard time locating this unit. I was annoyed that the Netgear customer support rep did not mention this unit to me as I specifically told him that I was looking for the same unit except faster throughput on the Wan to Lan interface.

I read the reviews on Newegg and there were a lot of negative reviews. I have used a lot of Netgear equipment in my work and have been very happy with their ProSafe line of switches and the FVS318G-100NAS firewall that I have had in my residence for the past 5 years. I felt fairly confident that for the money I was not going to do any better. So I placed the order.

As noted by some other reviewers the 1st thing you should do is update the firmware. I do this as a matter of practice with any new item, especially motherboards and video cards.

I updated the unit about 3 months ago when I received the unit from Newegg. It has been rock solid with no lockups or reboots required. I have even had 2 power outages during this time with no ill effects. It is giving me the advertised throughput averaging around 75 to 90 Mbps. It will spike up to 100 Mbps on the Infinity speed test so the sustained throughput is a function of Comcast's throttling. Great increase from 20 Mbps that I was getting from the G model.

All that said, this firewall is not the simplest to configure or take advantage of it many capabilities. I had a difficult time figure out how to open certain ports and how to configure the wireless. I did not try to or have the need use the VPN capabilities so I can't comment on this feature.

My main goal was to take advantage of my cable companies faster speeds while still keeping my home network safe. I believe the Netgear FVS318N-100NAS was a good choice for me.
