1 out of 5 eggsDO NOT BUY THIS ROUTER

Pros: Fast when it works
solid feeling unit

Cons: Does not work for long
10+ devices start making the unit give IP address conflicts
or drops devices altogether.
Heavy
HORRIBLE TECH SUPPORT

Other Thoughts: After owning the unit for 1 year and exactly 18 days it has become a $200 paper weight. I contacted netgear about the problem and they replied in no uncertain terms: "Dear SIr, you are 18 days past warranty search our data base.
thats so nice of them!

This device was used as a household 10+ devise phones, tablet computers etc. NO heavy use just internet surfing, some mmo gaming. gave out in 1 year. DO NOT WAIST YOUR MONEY. DO NOT WAIST YOUR MONEY.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Bryan,

We'd like to help, and thank you for reporting the issue. The first thing you can try is restoring the firmware to factory fresh, with a procedure that goes beyond the standard hard reset. You can find some instructions here:

http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/18989/~/router-power-led-blinks-slowly-and-router-no-longer-works

If the router continues to have issues after the refresh, please contact us at newegg@netgear.com.

Regards,

NETGEAR Team

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome

Pros: Fast, easy to setup, easy GUI.
I have had this for over a year and have never once had to restart it for anything. Worked right out of the box. Speeds are blazing.

Cons: none - worth every penny

Other Thoughts: I have had other brands through the years but NETGEAR is the only brand that has yet to let me down.

2 out of 5 eggsFailed after 7 months

Pros: Worked really well when it was operational.

Cons: Within the last month, i would lose internet connectivity (wired/wireless) almost daily and requiring almost a daily reboot. When this happens I am not able to get into the router's page until it has been power cycled.

Apparently, their support model has changed and you no longer get phone support after 90 days without paying. I hope I won't get the runaround from the ticket I opened via the web: 23046404

If I do get the runaround, this would be the last time I buy or recommend Netgear's products.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi vpkb,

Have you heard back from our support team? Were they able to get things up and running for you? If you are continuing to have issues, please get in touch with us at newegg@netgear.com. We'll work with you directly to resolve the issue or get you a warranty replacement if needed.

Regards,

NETGEAR Team

2 out of 5 eggsWas great until I got 5GHz devices...

Pros: When this router worked, it had pretty good throughput.
Lots of features (DLNA, SMB, Print Server)

Cons: Hardware Quality
Size

Other Thoughts: I bought this router after having a WNDR4000 for a year with great success. Should have waited longer so I knew about Netgear hardware quality. About 6 months later the WNDR4000 started being flaky, but I didn't know it was the router until a couple month ago when I switched to PFSense. The R6300 however, seemed to be going just fine for the past year. Everything I had was 2.4Ghz and was getting pretty decent speed.

My wife just got a 2nd gen Nexus 7 (802.11n 5GHz) and I got the new HTC One (802.11ac). Come to find out the 5GHz channel isn't functioning on the R6300. The router reports that its working but it's not. Now I'm a couple months past a year since my purchase and Netgear says I'm out of warranty to repair or replace. I'd switch to my WNDR4000 (which I bought before change to the lifetime warranty) but my network has lots of errors once that router is plugged in.

My last two routers were Trendnet and Buffalo routers. Both routers lasted between 3-4 years before they started acting flaky on WiFi. My first router was a D-Link and I had a very bad experience with it. I've avoided D-Link ever since. Looks like I'll be avoiding Netgear from now on too.

1 out of 5 eggsAt first it was great...

Pros: Worked flawlessly for the first three months.

Cons: Then I had to reboot it. Again. And again. And again and again. Today it died. Could be the power supply, but...at this point I don't care. It's under warranty.

Other Thoughts: Purchased Asus RT-N66U a month ago with the expectation this Netgear router would die. Glad I did. Actually, I bought the Asus because I needed external antennas. And the Netgear doesn't have those either.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Anonymous,

Can you describe what happened when the router "died?" Does it power on at all? If so, what activity do you see on the LED's?

We want to help you whatever way we can, including getting you a warranty replacement if needed. Please get in touch with us at as soon as you can at newegg@netgear.com and we'll be happy to help.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA

Pros: None

Cons: Could not even access admin control panel from IP or routerlogin.net Powered on but that was all it would do. Went with a less expensive netgear unit that worked great.

Other Thoughts: Never buy the top end of anything. Go for the middle.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Anonymous,

Can you tell us more about what happened when you received the router? Would it power on properly, and you just could not access the admin GUI? There is a known issue with a very limited number of R6300 units that required hardware replacement, and we would have been happy to assist if that were the case. If you still have the R6300, please get in touch with us at newegg@netgear.com and we'll be glad to make things right.

3 out of 5 eggsSupport is Lacking

Pros: Good wifi coverage, good speed, easy to set up.

Cons: support is lacking. you get 90 days of support and then you have to pay?
I am on the brink of 1 year having this and I see no reason to pay for support on this.
Ive had multiple issues with corrupted firmware after a reboot.

Other Thoughts: Im not sure if I am alone on this or not, but a router should not have the firmware corrupted on a reboot.

3 out of 5 eggsUPDATE - Router Dies with Firmware Issues

Pros: Performs well.

Cons: Firmware corruption issue -- see 'Other thoughts' below.

Other Thoughts: This is an update to my earlier 1/14/2014 review.

Netgear support did follow-up with me, and provided a link to a special firmware package R6300v1-V1.0.2.69_1.0.50 that also updates the device’s boot loader to enhance the protection of the firmware corruption.

I followed their provided procedure to first install this, then update to he latest firmware, and FINALLY I can power-off/power on my router without the firmware getting corrupted! Assuming this fix lasts, I now have my router back after months of disuse. Very excited.

While this R6300v1 router is probably not Netgear's finest work, based on the provided support I will consider Netgear products in the future.

I wish Netgear had somehow linked the firmware patch to their support article "Router Power LED Blinks Slowly and Router No Longer Works" (NOTE: title in my earlier review was not by Netgear -- that was from a different site). Less critically, I wish the TFTP instructions also included mac OS steps, which I had to figure out on my own. Note that the mac OS's built-in Terminal can easily perform the task -- no special TFTP client software is needed.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Eric,

We're glad that you were able to resolve your issues and for updating your review. If you have any further questions or feedback, please get in touch with us directly at newegg@netgear.com.

1 out of 5 eggsHeadace Router

Pros: Slick look,
does not know the performance as it does not work

Cons: This is my second router. I had to return the router provided by internet provider. I had connected the router as instructed. The power light keep on blinking. that is all I got. .

Other Thoughts: This router was replaced by Net Gear. one time. As I was using the other router, this one was sitting in box. I decided to use this one and only thing I got is blinking power light.

1 out of 5 eggsRouter Dies with Firmware Issues

Pros: Performs fine, when it works.

Cons: Router died after about a year with a single blinking green light. I went through the tedious process of reloading the firmware via TFTP as per Netgear's support solution on "How to Recover NETGEAR R6300 If Firmware Gets Corrupted / Blinking Green Light" . That lasted a few months then the same problem occurred again. I re-loaded the firmware, but the router failed again shortly after with the same issue. At this point, whenever the power fails or the router is powered off, the firmware is lost. I eventually got tired of reloading the firmware and went back to an older router. Very disappointed with this purchase.

Other Thoughts: I wish router had failed during the warranty period. Probably won't buy Netgear again.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Eric,

Please contact us at newegg@netgear.com. This is a known issue with the R6300 and we want to do what we can to help.
