1 out of 5 eggsupdating firmware creates a BRICK

Pros: worked great for almost 2 years

Cons: logged in yesterday to make a change and it showed that a firmware update was available. I started the update and waited for it to complete. I couldn't get it to respond to anything so after 30 minutes I finally rebooted. Still no response. So now I have a nice looking brick. contacted support, their response was "it's out of warranty".

Other Thoughts: hell of a way to sell routers. Destroy your current on with an update so you'll buy a new one. Too bad the next one wont be a netgear.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Colin,

Please give this fix a try:

2 out of 5 eggsFast, when it works.

Pros: When it works, it is fast and the connection is very reliable. I've never had a better router when it is up.

Cons: Bricks itself if you look at it funny. Seriously, I've never had a router corrupt its firmware so many times. Not even with all my previous routers combined.

Other Thoughts: In less than 2 years, it has bricked itself 5 times. 3 of these times have been when using the company's own Genie tools to either reboot or update my firmware. The other two were from short duration power spikes...small enough that I've never had any other router just completely die from them.

I've been able to reinstall firmware with TFTP 4 times, but this time it seems like it is completely fried.

I find this level of unreliability, especially when using the tools made for the product, to be completely unacceptable.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Christopher,

We are very sorry for the frustrations that the R6300 has caused. Whenever you notice that any of our products isn't working like it should please let us know. We have a 1 year hardware warranty available for most products-- the next time you have an issue with any of our products please remember to email us at newegg@netgear.com.

Regards,

NETGEAR Team

1 out of 5 eggsWhen they work they work...

Pros: This is a very fast and powerful consumer/home router.
And when it worked it gave great performance, having a supped up NAS on hand I was able to peak my LAN loads to the 1Gbps limits on several machines.

Cons: I have had this thing for almost a year (probably on-line and operational for about 310-320 days), and it has failed. The LAN and WLAN network portion of this router is still functional, but it does not seem to recognized or communicate with anything that is plugged into the “internet” port.
Over the course of the year that I have owned this I have had lots of lockups and internet connection drops with this router, most of which were easily fixed by restarting or cold-starting the router. I have tired several firmware updates, however none seemed to fix the problems of dropping the internet connection.

I have given Netgear a good try over the past three years, and have gone through three different routers (all three were different models), each router only lasted about a year before failing. I am not all impressed over their reliability or quality.

Other Thoughts: I think some of the problems could be related to heat. I had installed a 40mm fan inside the router (when I noticed it was getting rather warm) to draw air onto the CPU and that seemed to slow down the frequency of internet connection drops from 1-3 times a day to 3-5 times a week. Drops seemed to be inconsistent with internet/local network traffic loads.

Manufacturer Response:

Hey Nova,

We want to get your R6300 working properly at all times. If you ever notice problems with any of our products please let us know right away. You can email us at newegg@netgear.com with the serial number of your unit and a copy and paste of your review.

2 out of 5 eggsIntermittently fun project

Pros: Looks great. Often works, for a while at least. The Netgear Genie program sometimes helps restore internet connectivity.

Cons: Often -- frequently, in fact -- drops internet for no reason. Is it overheating? Is it affected by solar flares? I thought I had a correlation with wind speeds, but that didn't pan out.

The Netgear Genie program sometimes doesn't help.

Other Thoughts: This router is a fun challenge for those seeking a high-maintenance intermittent internet connection. Okay for e-mailing and reading text-only web pages. Not so good for streaming or for uses that require a reliable connection, like for work.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Fly Bob,

We are very sorry to hear that your R6300 is frequently dropping connectivity. Please get inc ontact with our support staff right away at support.netgear.com. They can give you the next step to get everything working flawlessly.

We appreciate your business and hope to get this issue resolved right away.

5 out of 5 eggsBest router so far.

Pros: Good range, no signal drops, using Netgear wireless N adapters for 3 PCs, tablets, phones, printer - all wireless.
USB 3.0 fof NAS.
Small footprint
Easy setup/config
Netgear Genie

Cons: None so far, works as needed.

Other Thoughts: I did not purchase this router from newegg as it was an emergency purchase due to my previous router dying over a Christmas holiday. We use this router for media streaming, general internet surfing, and occasional data transfer between PCs. We have never had to reset this router. I have not tested this router with AC wireless adapters. if I were to have to make a choice today I would buy the newer version, the Nighthawk, as it is very similar (except the footprint is larger) and is slightly more powerful, but if you want an excellent router and save a few dollars this one would be an excellent choice.

Cons: Bad Support

1 out of 5 eggsShould have lasted longer...

Pros: It was fast for the first year. I had to restart it ever 2 weeks to a month, but was for the most part okay with that.

Cons: Something this expensive should have lasted more than 13 months. I'm really disappointed that NETGEAR would put out such a shotty product. I won't be buying NETGEAR again in the foreseeable future. My product is now a brick.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Becky,

Can you tell us what exactly is happening with the R6300? When you power it on, do you see the LED's light up on the front panel? Can you get to the GUI, just not connect to the router or the Internet?

If you are seeing a blinking green light, it's possible that due to a power outage or surge, the firmware became corrupted. Here are instructions on how to resolve this issue:

http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/18989/~/router-power-led-blinks-slowly-and-router-no-longer-works

if you continue to have problems, please get in touch with us directly at newegg@netgear.com.

1 out of 5 eggsDied after a Year

Pros: speed, coverage

Cons: died right after warranty expired

Other Thoughts: I expect router last longer than a year. Especially for the price that you pay

Manufacturer Response:

Hi FeelDaPower,

When you say that it "died," what do you mean? Did you try to completely reset the router to factory spec? Does it power on? If it does power on, what is the status of the LED's?

Please get in touch with us at newegg@netgear.com and we'll see what we can do to help!

Pros: Works perfectly. No complaints.

Cons: Me. Everyone only writes to COMPLAIN, including me. Most newegg stuff works great, and I never review.

2 out of 5 eggsHorrible

Pros: Easy setup
Power button
5ghz and 2.4ghz

Cons: This device refuses to stay up. I have to unplug it every other day. It worked fine for the first two weeks which is coincidentally the same amount of time I had to return it for a refund to the big box store I bought it from.

Other Thoughts: I would expect a more reliable experience for this cost. I could have done better spending 20 bucks on a zyxel

Manufacturer Response:

Hi dooder man,

The dropouts you experienced are definitely not normal, but this is a known issue that some early R6300 units experienced in a limited number of cases. We would have been happy to help and work with you to either resolve the problem or get you a warranty replacement. We hope that you will be willing to work with us and we hope to earn your business in the future, and thank you as well for your patience.

Regards,

NETGEAR Team
