5 out of 5 eggsFollow-Up review

Pros: This router was very easy to setup. IT is really a great Router. I reviewed it earlier and gave it a zero star because of their support. I have several Netgear Products and this one appear to be head and shoulders above it's competitors and at a great price. MY problem with this router is it is putting out a loud squeaky noise as if a bearing is going out in the fan inside the Router. The router did not stop working and it still working but with the fan making noise I know it will go out sooner that later so I wanted to get it replaced while it is new and under warranty.

I can put up to a 2TB drive in the router and access it from anywhere in the world with internet access.
A great price for a well thought through product.

Cons: The cons is only that the 1st and 2nd level support is to bad to consider support. However since i wrote my first review I received a call from the support team and they are going to replace the router.

Other Thoughts: I am happy that someone saw this and decided to follow up and replace it rather than leave me with a faulty unit. SO I woudl have to say the bad support is not a culture that permeates the company, It appears to be just poor support at the lower level of customer support. Knowing what I know now I would buy this Router again.

1 out of 5 eggsBad News Support

Pros: This is the easiest Router to set up I have ever seen. IF only the company was good.

Cons: Customer Service is Atrocious at best. That is if you can call it any type support.
The fan appears to b bad in my unit. Within 2 weeks it started making a lot of noise.
They do not cross ship bad units, they want you to jump through hoops for what they call CUSTOMER SERVICE and what I call "Lack of customer service"

Other Thoughts: Netgear wasted over 2 hours of my time trouble shooting something looking for a software solution for a hardware problem. After wasting my time they decided the unit was bad and it need to be replaced. "You will receive an email after we end this session. Please fill out the information
needed to complete the replacement. Kindly check the link as well for warranty return policy."
BY THE WAY THE E-MAIL HAS NOT CAME ALso they expect me to sit at home for 48 hours waiting for their call. I am so frustrated I intend to ask my son who is an attorney to file a suit against NetGear and hopefully get it classified as a class action lawsuit and make them pay dearly for abusing me, my time and my money,.

5 out of 5 eggsSo far, Looks to be an Amazing Find

Pros: This router replaces an Asus rt-n16 that will be appearing on an online auction site shortly. There really is no comparison as far as connectivity and speed. On every level the WNDR4700 is far superior. The NAS function gives me 35MB/90MB transfer speeds while the rt-n16 could barely muster 8MB/8MB. The wifi coverage and speed is fantastic. Onmy laptop with 5ghz wifi connection, I'm getting the same internet speed as my wred desktop connection. This thing appears to be amazing.

I connected a 2.5" ssd via an Ultra ULT40443 2.5" hard drive enclosure. It fits and works perfectly. I'll probable get an icy dock 2s 3.5" enclosure soon so as to run 2-2.5" ssd with raid in the 3.5" bay.
No heat issues whatsoever, especially with the ssd.

Cons: Fan could be quieter.
Firmware lags a bit, but not enough to worry about. Wouldn't mind seeing an improvement here though.

Other Thoughts: So far, I'm very impressed and for the performance and price of this router, I don't see how you can go wrong. It looks to be an amazing find.

1 out of 5 eggsGarbage

Pros: great concept, NAS / ROUTER / ALL in one.

Cons: This device crashes all the time, the DLNA server works 10% of the time. I have to reboot at least 1 x a week. Now after a few months it is to the point of rebooting does not fix the problem....Dont buy, will not work after a few months

Other Thoughts: I thought highly of Netgear, after this device I have changed my mind.

4 out of 5 eggsProduct better than my original review

Pros: Hardware itself is very good once you are able to get to the "Netgear Genie". The router has a DHCP server so it will generate a IP address for your computer. The router does exactly what I wanted by turning on the wireless AP mode. Can add a USB external disk and use it as a NAS.

Cons: Documentation included in the box is very for people with existing networks. It appears to be targeted to users setting up theor first network. The router I received had been on the self for over 15 months which may have been the cause of some of my problems. I do plan to install an internal disk because it would always spin and would cause an heat problem.

Other Thoughts: If you have an existing internet connected network, ignore most of what the installation guide says. If you have no use for the WAN port and do not need the DHCP, then you probably would want to use the wireless AP mode. this basically gives you a 5 port switch and a wireless Access Point. It took 3 calls and about 3 hours with tech support to get me to the "Netgear Genie".

4 out of 5 eggsPatients pays off

Pros: Very good WI-FI range and data through-put, options to have hard drive installed inside.

Cons: Immediate firmware update needed, does have some fan noise, rather larger than other routers and could have done better with a 2.5" drive bay instead of the 3.5"

Other Thoughts: The auto configure did not work with comcast modem I have so i configure manually and works great with no downtime.

1 out of 5 eggsWorst product ever from netgear

Pros: Ethernet cable is usable.

Cons: I can't even get to the login page to configure it! The router requires connection to the modem to configure! So far it appears that it will not work with my modem. Don't even think about this product for a network that is not on the network.

Other Thoughts: This products poor design has destroyed the Netgear reputation as far as I am concerned. I want products that I can connect to my computer and configure. This garbage requires a modem (that they like) and a computer. Have talked to tech support twice so far and just waste of time so far. Today they said they will call back in a couple of minutes, but 2 hours latter still no callback. I think they know it is junk.

1 out of 5 eggsSecond Try

Pros: Price on sale

Cons: The Netgear logo light in the center of the router is annoying.

This thing is fairly large, which can be expected because of the hard drive bay.

Cannot be mounted to a wall.

The fan is extremely noisy and will probably get louder with use.

Hard drive bay door is flimsy.

Firmware Issue.

Other Thoughts: This thing is a piece of junk. It defiantly has a major firmware issue.

After configuring it with all of the required settings, none of which are out of the ordinary. I made the mistake of clicking on reboot on the admin page. This causes a constant reboot state. Factory reset did nothing, 30, 30, 30 reset does nothing. This was the same thing that happen with the first unit that was RMAed

I have wasted time and money on this router. The first one I had to pay for return shipping. This one was returned for a refund.
It has been 6 weeks from start to now and I still do not have a useable product.

This is the first time NETGEAR has let me down. I have numerous Netgear products that I am extremely happy with. Some of which are refurbed.

2 out of 5 eggsPrefer previous Linksys router

Pros: Works great as a router.

Cons: FTP is too buggy to be useful. Media server ok. Issues with access to files. I liked the way Linksys let me control each MAC address's access with a calendar. This one won't do that. Phone app is not useful.

Other Thoughts: I had a Linksys router and a WD NAS and hoped to replace them both with this an a hard drive. I ended up with a router with a hard drive in it that is sometimes accessible. Tempted to buy a new Linksys router.
