2 out of 5 eggsNot as good as I hoped

Pros: The router is stylish and easy to set up.
The web interface is nice.

Cons: The wifi connection isn't very stable. Every day or two we need to either restart the router or disconnect and reconnect to the wifi network. This predominantly happens on the 2.4 GHz network, so 5GHz might be more stable.

The unit doesn't power on when a hard drive is in the bay. These aren't known good hard drives, but still. I got this unit for the network storage and can't use it for that.

1 out of 5 eggsDrops connection

Pros: ReadyShare technology makes NAS pretty simple. I haven't found a decent use for it, but it's certainly a decent bonus. UI is fairly simple to use and setup is a breeze.

Cons: The router will drop your connection multiple times a day by just becoming unresponsive. Pinging the router will result in a timeout, until the router comes back a short time later. Wired connections are usually unaffected, only wireless. Nothing shows up in logs.

The fan is loud.

The GUI is slow.

The Logs are by default set to show DoS attacks from well known sites such as and

Other Thoughts: I'm done with Netgear. I figured an expensive router wouldn't have these issues, but I was sorely mistaken. Unfortunately Netgear doesn't care about its consumer base, only its business customers who are willing to pay for large support contracts rather than put out a decent product.

1 out of 5 eggsNetgear Dual Band Router (WNDR4700)

Pros: Worked very well as a router with excellent connection and high speed.

Cons: Decided to purchase a 5GB external hard drive to plug into the Netgear's USB3 port(s) and for this application the router is utter garbage. Transfer speeds are slow. Disconnects occur about once or more a day and sometimes during transfer.

Other Thoughts: Will likely not be rushing to purchase additional Netgear products and will unfortunately be looking for a similar fairly expensive router with good reviews.

1 out of 5 eggsIt's a Brick

Pros: Good price. Newegg's very easy return policy.

Cons: It arrived as a "brick". 2 hours of troubleshooting with Netgear could not fix it

Other Thoughts: I a week or two I get to try the next one

1 out of 5 eggsNetgear is the worse company ever

Pros: None

Cons: Wifi disconnects when more than 5 smartphones connected

Other Thoughts: I bought two of this router when it was on sale with a rebate. I bought it for $60 each after rebate. First time I used it, I tried them both and both of them has wifi issues (only for smartphones) when I have more than 5 smartphones connected to it, but the ethernet and wifi for laptops still works.

I contacted their customer support on this and they refused to help me online via chat cause I didn't have my proof of purchase so I sent them a screenshot and they said I have to be approved first. They can't help me even when I sent them a screenshot of my proof of purchase.

Few days later, I received an email from their customer support asking me about my problem. They asked me what's wrong with it and I explained it to them via email. I upgraded the firmware, followed the steps they provided, etc, and still has the same problems.

Finally, we chatted through the phone, and they were asking me more questions and provided steps to follow. I followed the steps and stayed on the phone thinking that they would at least provide me with a replacement/refund free of charge. After one hour on the phone with them, they said they won't replace/refund it free of charge. I have to pay for shipping out of my own pocket.

Luckily, I found two buyers for the router. I didn't lose any money. If I sent in the router, I would have lost $10-20 bucks and received another defective (99.9%) router since it's the same model.

I would expect something I buy brand new to be working, if it wasn't working, I wouldn't have bought it in the first place.

I would suggest buyers to stay away from this product and the Netgear company.

I see deals on Netgear router all the time. I really like the deals, but since they have bad customer service and I had a bad experience, makes me stay away from Netgear. I won't ever spend a penny on Netgear.

I'm pretty sure I had more knowledge about routers than the customer support.

By the way, the customer support person I spoke to from Netgear is the Team Manager named John. Expert ID: 46008. He ended up hanging up on me.

1 out of 5 eggsnot worth the $

Pros: 3.5" bay is cool, ive never owned a router with nas built in. which is the main reason i bought it. unfortunately, it is probably the worst router ive ever owned.

Cons: wifi range is horrendous, both bands. the 2.4Ghz is bad and 5.0Ghz is darn near useless unless you are right next to it. neatgear firmware interface is slow and laggy. it will screw up your hard drive (if applicable) i wouldn't advise putting one in there. hard wired is ok at times after several resets but ONLY if Wifi features are turned off. which defeats the purpose of this router.

Other Thoughts: netgear tech support is non-existent, im sorry im not fluent in Bengali, Telugu or whatever Indian language they outsourced the support to. i speak english.
in conclusion. dont waste your money or time on this router. if you have unfortunately bought this i would save all the packaging and invoice you will need it. it will come in handy when you return it.

1 out of 5 eggsLots of features, little quality

Pros: Built in NAS, high transfer speeds

Cons: WAN port failed after 9 months. Kind of important

Other Thoughts: I bought this router because it had the perfect combination of things I'm looking for: hard drive bay, USB 3.0 ports (perfect for a media center PC storage), N900, decent range. I did NOT expect that, after 9 months, the WAN port would be deceased. I have a support ticket in to Netgear, but after seeing the negative experiences by others here, i'm not overly optimistic.

1 out of 5 eggsDO NOT BUY THIS

Pros: None

Cons: Failed within one year of ownership. Netgear refused to honor their own warranty and replace product.

Other Thoughts: I will NEVER gain own a netgear product. I strongly advise that you avoid buying anything Netgear. This router has been nothing but a huge problem since the get go. It is loud, runs very hot, and often requires hours of down time in order to "reset." The software that came with the router caused extreme system lag and connectivity issues often reducing ISP speed by up to 40%. When I contacted Netgear about the issues and tried to obtain and RMA, I was given the run around for months. Now the unit is out of warranty and they won't even discuss replacement.
