1 out of 5 eggsGarbage

Pros: great concept, NAS / ROUTER / ALL in one.

Cons: This device crashes all the time, the DLNA server works 10% of the time. I have to reboot at least 1 x a week. Now after a few months it is to the point of rebooting does not fix the problem....Dont buy, will not work after a few months

Other Thoughts: I thought highly of Netgear, after this device I have changed my mind.

4 out of 5 eggsProduct better than my original review

Pros: Hardware itself is very good once you are able to get to the "Netgear Genie". The router has a DHCP server so it will generate a IP address for your computer. The router does exactly what I wanted by turning on the wireless AP mode. Can add a USB external disk and use it as a NAS.

Cons: Documentation included in the box is very for people with existing networks. It appears to be targeted to users setting up theor first network. The router I received had been on the self for over 15 months which may have been the cause of some of my problems. I do plan to install an internal disk because it would always spin and would cause an heat problem.

Other Thoughts: If you have an existing internet connected network, ignore most of what the installation guide says. If you have no use for the WAN port and do not need the DHCP, then you probably would want to use the wireless AP mode. this basically gives you a 5 port switch and a wireless Access Point. It took 3 calls and about 3 hours with tech support to get me to the "Netgear Genie".

4 out of 5 eggsPatients pays off

Pros: Very good WI-FI range and data through-put, options to have hard drive installed inside.

Cons: Immediate firmware update needed, does have some fan noise, rather larger than other routers and could have done better with a 2.5" drive bay instead of the 3.5"

Other Thoughts: The auto configure did not work with comcast modem I have so i configure manually and works great with no downtime.

1 out of 5 eggsWorst product ever from netgear

Pros: Ethernet cable is usable.

Cons: I can't even get to the login page to configure it! The router requires connection to the modem to configure! So far it appears that it will not work with my modem. Don't even think about this product for a network that is not on the network.

Other Thoughts: This products poor design has destroyed the Netgear reputation as far as I am concerned. I want products that I can connect to my computer and configure. This garbage requires a modem (that they like) and a computer. Have talked to tech support twice so far and just waste of time so far. Today they said they will call back in a couple of minutes, but 2 hours latter still no callback. I think they know it is junk.

1 out of 5 eggsSecond Try

Pros: Price on sale

Cons: The Netgear logo light in the center of the router is annoying.

This thing is fairly large, which can be expected because of the hard drive bay.

Cannot be mounted to a wall.

The fan is extremely noisy and will probably get louder with use.

Hard drive bay door is flimsy.

Firmware Issue.

Other Thoughts: This thing is a piece of junk. It defiantly has a major firmware issue.

After configuring it with all of the required settings, none of which are out of the ordinary. I made the mistake of clicking on reboot on the admin page. This causes a constant reboot state. Factory reset did nothing, 30, 30, 30 reset does nothing. This was the same thing that happen with the first unit that was RMAed

I have wasted time and money on this router. The first one I had to pay for return shipping. This one was returned for a refund.
It has been 6 weeks from start to now and I still do not have a useable product.

This is the first time NETGEAR has let me down. I have numerous Netgear products that I am extremely happy with. Some of which are refurbed.

2 out of 5 eggsPrefer previous Linksys router

Pros: Works great as a router.

Cons: FTP is too buggy to be useful. Media server ok. Issues with access to files. I liked the way Linksys let me control each MAC address's access with a calendar. This one won't do that. Phone app is not useful.

Other Thoughts: I had a Linksys router and a WD NAS and hoped to replace them both with this an a hard drive. I ended up with a router with a hard drive in it that is sometimes accessible. Tempted to buy a new Linksys router.

4 out of 5 eggsfinally good unit

Pros: After dropping wireless connections several times I was fed up with unit so started to play with settings and found that after setting the mode on 2.5k and 5 k to 217 I have had no more trouble with dropped wireless connection and speed is very fast. This has turned into a very good unit..

Cons: Had to play with settings. does not operate correctly at top speed settings.

Other Thoughts: Hope this helps someone else.

2 out of 5 eggsNot the best router. Unstable 2.4ghz bands. Loud fan!

Pros: Provides 450mbps on both 2.4 and 5ghz bands. Has USB 3.0 ports> You can add a hard drive for storage NAS. The 5ghz speeds are pretty good and stable at most of the time.

Cons: 2.4ghz is virtually unstable. You will have to reboot it every 24hrs to get it back up to speed. If you don't reboot it the connection will either drop or degrade overtime. A 50mbps will drop to 5-8mbps if not reset within the 24hrs period. Another is the fan is very loud and would not recommend putting it in your room.

Other Thoughts: The router could have been designed a little better and better firmware could be applied.

1 out of 5 eggsBad Design

Pros: Price

Cons: The Netgear logo light in the center of the router is annoying.

This thing is fairly large, which can be expected because of the hard drive bay.

Cannot be mounted to a wall.

The fan is extremely noisy and will probably get louder with use.

Hard drive bay door is flimsy.

Other Thoughts: I purchased this Router because of the price. I don’t care about the hard drive ReadyShare feature. The Router was setup as an access point only to fit in with my existing infrastructure. It worked for two hours then was powered down and moved to its final location. When turned back on it started into a constant reboot state then started flashing the power indicator light amber, which the manual states is a corrupt firmware. Tried factory reset with no results. Also the fan is intermittently extremely noisy.

The Netgear logo light in the center of the router is annoying. I guess a piece of black tape could fix it.
The price of the unit for me is now $18.00 more because of RMA return shipping cost. I guess a good deal sometimes turns out not to be one after all.

2 out of 5 eggsFan is loud

Pros: Overall, it is a great idea. The product worked right out of the box. I really enjoy netgear routers. It is shiny.

Cons: Guys. I read the reviews that the fan is loud. It is loud. I build very quiet systems and this fan is louder than those.

Other Thoughts: I chose to ignore the reports of how loud the fan is. I shouldn't have. Good job on the reviews Neweggers. I'm attempting to return this item and will buy another router. I like purchasing from Newegg and I typically enjoy Netgear technology. Netgear widely missed the boat on this router. Stay clear.
