5 out of 5 eggsFast, Easy Setup, Fan quieter than expected

Pros: - Fast 10Gb connection over copper Cat 6,6a,7 (with no GBIC costs)
- Works with SuperMicro XEON D mini-itx 1521/1540 with dual Intel 10Gb ports
- Easy setup - plug-n-play for initial power up and simple quick speed test
- Fan noise is audible but not bad at all, especially since switch is in a home office server closet

Cons: - None, works exactly as expected

4 out of 5 eggsNot loud with firmware update

Pros: Good switch. It actually has a web interface unlike the 8 port XS708E which you have to configure through a Windows Utility only.

When I first plugged the switch in and was doing the initial configuration, the switch was VERY loud, just like others have noted, but when I was done configuring I updated the firmware from to and once I rebooted it the thing was super quiet, I didn't even realize it had come back on.

It's possible it will ramp the fans up when it's under load, but at least at idle now it's quiet.

Cons: None so far.

4 out of 5 eggsFast Switch but has some drawbacks

Pros: We have several of these Switches in our company.. on the positive side ... it supports many advanced features link LAG /Link Aggregation including 802.3ad ) to bond several 10GB Ports together into a bigger pipe ( For example if your Server was running an Intel X540-T2 Dual Port Network card - you could get 20GB)

it has the most "bang for the Buck" in 10GB switches .. the only similar switches I could find were the Cisco SG500XG at 2 Times the prices (it has more Fiber ports) and the Cheaper Netgear XS708E - See below for details

Cons: This Switch is **VERY LOUD** to the point that it's really not acceptable for use in a small office, (even hidden under a desk etc) really designed for a Server room or wire closet..

Other Thoughts: If you only need 8 10GB ports or Less & want a much something not as Loud as this ... I would Recommend the Netgear XS708E - It does Lack some of the features like (802.3ad ) But still supports Link aggregation through (adaptive load balancing active/active active/standby etc)

also the management software on the XS708E -vs- XS712T is very basic web interface... but if all you need is 8 ports or less of 10GB for Server to NAS Backup - it can't be beat.. for "Top of the Rack" or small office deployment

3 out of 5 eggsDoes what it's supposed to, but oh so very very loud...

Pros: Excellent price for a 10GBE switch. Thus far, works as advertised.

Cons: For a SOHO where setting up in a separate room isn't an option, the noise from this switch is abominable. The fans are just ridiculously loud. If I can't find suitable replacement fans that operate at a much lower dBA rating, I'm reluctantly going to have to sell this device.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat value

Pros: Very inexpensive by 10 GBE standards and no setup required. Worked with our generic DAC cable and generic cat 7 and 6a cables. Worked with Intel and HP NICs. Not loud.

Cons: Only 2 SFP+ ports

Other Thoughts: Other 10 GBE switches have elaborate capabilities beyond just passing packets to the right port. They have security features, can route, do BGP, etc. We didn't need any of that and are fine not to have it. This worked as a top of rack switch without any setup at all and cost about 85% less than any alternative.

5 out of 5 eggsLoud but goof

Pros: Considering the price, you really can't complain to get 10 Gb. Used this for a SQL Server cluster and wanted 10 Gb for the shared storage interface.

Cons: Are the fans loud? Yes, insanely so actually. I am looking at popping this thing open and seeing if I can get some fans of the same CFM but lower operating DB... but even then, it's not big deal to me. It's rack mounted in a dedicated server room, so the noise is isolated anyways. I wouldn't recommend this if you want to be working next to it or anything.

4 out of 5 eggsSo far, Good Switch

Pros: 10GbE Managed Switch at an affordable price.

Cons: None as of yet

Other Thoughts: I'm not having the same issue with the fan noise. Though, the 2 switches are in a small server room, at the top of the rack, right next to the A/C unit. I'm using these as ethernet based NAS switches for my 3 server host virtual infrastructure. I just upgraded from 2 x Gigabit TrendNet unmanaged switches that were solid, but I have now reached the point where I needed more speed and thought I'd give these a whirl.

1 out of 5 eggsWow. L O U D

Pros: Didn't keep it long enough to find any.

Cons: This is advertised as Netgear's entry to low priced 10Gb office environment. Yeah unless you get the noise down 2+ orders of magnitude that isn't going to happen. We tried this in a noise canceling enclosure and it was still way too loud if you're within 50 feet.
