1 out of 5 eggsDon't Make The Same Mistake I Did. STAY AWAY!!!

Pros: I'm so frustrated and angry that I can't think of any pros.

Cons: My ISP recently brought 300 mbps service to my area and ran a special. We took advantage of that special. After a day of install and testing, we could not get over 100 mbps on my desktop. We finally figured out that the problem was my network. I had a Netgear CENTRIA 4700 router and a D-Link 8 port gigabit smart switch. I upgraded to this Netgear Nighthawk router and a TP-Link 16 port gigabit smart switch. I was still getting about 85 mpbs of the 300 mbps coming out of my modem. I called Netgear tech support and was told that I must have it hooked up wrong. I knew this was not the case, but decided that I needed to have all of my ducks in a row before calling again. Double checking everything I found all of my cabling to be CAT 6. I had 300 + mbps from my modem, also from the router and if I disconnected the router, and came off the switch, I still had my 300 + mbps. But, if I hooked the router and switch up, it dropped me back down to 85 mbps. This is basically the same problem that I had before upgrading my router and switch. I called Netgear tech support again and gave them this information. This time without any testing, I was told that the problem had to be my switch and to call TP-Link tech support. I was not happy, but made the call and after working with TP-Link and swapping switches with no change. We came to the conclusion that I had a router problem. I decided to give Netgear one last chance and called their tech support one more time. This time the support agent put me on hold many times, but never did any testing. At the conclusion of this call, I was again told that I had a switch problem and not a router problem. I am sending this router back!

Other Thoughts: This has been the worst tech support experience I have ever had. On top of everything else, I must have made 10 Netgear tech support calls and 4 of those I was disconnected with no call back (don't ask for my phone number in case we are disconnected if you don't intend to call back!!!!). Several of these calls, the tech support agents accents were so thick that I had a very hard time understanding what they were saying. I will NEVER buy another Netgear product again!

1 out of 5 eggsGreat Router when Wi-Fi is Working.

Pros: Nice router, when it is working. I was so excited about buying this beast of a router. Running firmware - V1.0.3.60_1.1.27. Web interface is clean and easy to navigate.
Don’t know about 5GHz Wi-Fi, haven’t yet been able to get 5GHz devices to connect to Linksys WUSB600N adapters.

Cons: Wi-Fi is fluky. Laptops, printers, Android phones & tablets sporadically loose internet connection and/or drop off the network. Sometimes a device’s Wi-Fi indicator will show a strong connection, but the internet and local network cannot be accessed. Other time a device’s Wi-Fi indicator shows a local network connection with limited to no internet connection, in these cases the internet will not be functioning and local network will be hit or miss (i.e. access to network printers, servers or NASs may or may be available). And last but not best, a device’s Wi-Fi connection will be showing no signal, while the R7000 will be happily chugging along believing it is broadcasting an amazing signal.
Basically, the Wi-Fi issues are all variations on the same theme, constant interruption in the Wi-Fi connection.
The fix: Rebooting the router has proven to be the only fix to the problem. Nothing else seems to work. I have read many internet post regarding this issue. You can spend hours, as I have, tweaking the R7000’s settings, to no avail. Many R7000 owners have shared their similar experiences all over the web. Reboot, Reboot, Reboot.

Other Thoughts: For a $200 router this is unacceptable. Totally unsatisfied!
There doesn’t seem to be a solution to this problem (with Netgear firmware) other than rebooting the router two to ten times throughout the day. Some folks have had luck with DD-WRT (Kong’s Build). But, for some the problem persisted even after flashing with DD-WRT. It is amazing to me that this Wi-Fi problem, so well documented over the months since the R7000 release, has not been fixed. Yes, there have been numerous firmware updates, but the Wi-Fi unreliability continues
Will give it a few more days because I have been a loyal Netgear customer over the years, but if no permanent solution surfaces I will return it and get the ASUS RT-AC68u.
Come on, Netgear, you are having your $$$ handed to you by Asus. Fix this issue or you will not be able to stem the flood of customers jumping ship to your competitors.

4 out of 5 eggsWorkHorse

Pros: Goes a lot of time without power cycles or problems, extremely stable under hi loads of network traffic, i have 15 devices connected to this beast, it handles all the traffic you throw at it, and i mean "real hard network traffic" i can not be any happier with this beast.

Cons: This thing is huge, Only four data ports makes it practically unusable without a switch, wireless range is quite good even so i have concrete walls, GUI should be improved, its kind of "OLD CLASSY". Ready Shared USB is not worth a penny, you will do better with any other media server or NAS..

Other Thoughts: Excellent for hi tech homes, mid size offices, you can add multiple switches.

If you're looking for a high performance network traffic manager, you should take a serious look at this one

3 out of 5 eggsUpdated Review.

Pros: Still evaluating usit. Can't comment yet.

Cons: Ugly as Bill Cosby's newborn son. Read Other Thoughts.

Other Thoughts: Had two problems with this router. 1. When the brand new Mac Book Pro tried to connect, I kept seeing an "Invalid Password" error, even though I knew the password was correct. My Samsung Note II phone connected fine, as did my Samsung and Lenovo laptop.

Also discovered that after a few days, the router wouldn't respond at all to connection attempts. Didn't even see the invalid password error. Rebooting fixed this one.

Called Netgear Tech support. The person on the phone would only lead me to the WPA-2 password page to check what was there. No other knowledge or suggestions. Less than useful.

Both problems solved via web search, and experience.

1. Apple computers seem to not like any capital letters in the middle of the SSID. I had set an SSID of "ObamaNet". When I changed this to "Obamanet", the Mac Book Pro connected instantly, and no longer showed the Invalid Password problem. Both Apple and Netgear techs had never seen this before.

2. Before you do ANYTHING with this router, update the firmware. The firmware on shipped units is buggy as heck. Updating the firmware seems to have fixed the second problem.

I'm willing to cut Netgear slack for shipping buggy firmware, and not knowing about the case problem with the SSID, but the tech support person should have suggested updating the firmware as a first step. In fact, if anyone calls Netgear tech support, the first order of business should be a firmware update.

1 out of 5 eggsDoesn't like Apple. Horrible tech support from NG.

Pros: High speed service when it works. Easy to configure interface.

Cons: Unstable. Requires rebooting weekly. Also, Apple doesn't like password many times, and refuses to connect. Netgear tech support could only check the spelling of the password configured on the unit. No other tech support skills. No understanding of WPA-2 handshaking, or troubleshooting. Unit getting returned for a different brand.

Apple network experts troubleshot unit. No problem seen on their end.

Other Thoughts: If you have a Mac, you might want to try something else.

Manufacturer Response:

5 out of 5 eggsIt's all In the Firmware!!

Pros: This is monster of a router, If you install the right firmware on it.

Cons: Unfortunately, If you use the factory firmware it's gonna be disappointing.

Other Thoughts: Search for DD-WRT R 7000. should be the first link to pop up but its from myopenrouter, and your router will become the beast the engineers designed it to be.

2 out of 5 eggsNot Ready for Prime Time

Pros: Easy setup
Genie App
looks cool I guess..

Cons: Not reliable. Signal drops and connection loses to most Wifi enabled devices in my household; Netgear N bridge devices, Multiple N PC's and other various items. There also seems to be an issue with wired networking as well. My HDHomerun boxes became unstable when I moved to this router.

Other Thoughts: I was really hoping the other negative reviews were isolated and i would get a good unit. I guess I was wrong. My other Netgear router was stable but I wanted more bandwidth. Even upgraded to the new Netgear firmware and still no luck.

Manufacturer Response:

Our apologies that your R7000 isn't working properly-- we want to get this fixed right away. Please get in contact with our support team when you get a chance.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Router

Pros: Easy setup with Genie...I let it set my internet up and then went in and changed the wifi portion, port forwarding etc. Has decent features. Its easy to use. Has 2.4, 5ghz and guest options for wireless. Its fast with good range.

Cons: A little expensive, but you get what you pay for.

Other Thoughts: I have implemented this router at our small work area with Opendns filtering and it has been working great for 6 month's. This marks 2 in a row i have gotten functioning units on arrival, so if you get one that works, it should be stable. I have not witnessed and random/frequent disconnects. If you are getting them, I suggest updating firmware or perhaps it could be defective.
