4 out of 5 eggsGood Enough

Pros: Nothing really special to note. You get what you paid for - a no hassle router that is easy to get running. DD-WRT firmware can be installed but I messed it up last time by installing the standard FW first instead of the small one, bricking my last router. Funny how you only find out the right order to install firmware only after you've already bricked it.

Cons: The instruction CD that came with it seems like it was made 15 years ago and no one bothered to update it (Windows ME/98??).

Other Thoughts: The package was delivered by On-Trac. First time I've heard of them. I was sitting in the living room when the delivery guy arrived. I watched as he drove past my driveway, busted a U-turn, pull up to the sidewalk, reverse til he was blocking my driveway, then chilled in his car for about 2 minutes. He eventually carried my package to my porch, but he didn't just lay it down gently and knocked on the door to notify. No, no. He shoved the box to the ground like he was passing a ball in the NBA and promptly walked away. If I had a choice, I wouldn't pick these guys for any kind of delivery again.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat but almost obsolete

Pros: Great reliability. I never had to restart it. It's never crashed since I got it in 2009. Runs most custom firmware, but only the smaller sizes though because it doesn't have as much RAM as newer models. Great g wifi performance and coverage.

Cons: The hardware is getting too dated if you have 50 Mbps internet or faster. First, g wifi will net you between 20-30 Mbps under ideal conditions. Second, the CPU is too weak to handle downloads (over wired LAN) above 38 Mbps. Granted I'm running a modded tomato firmware, but I had to overclock the CPU to 250 MHz (from the standard 200 MHz) in order to get over 50 Mbps downloads. ***You might get better or worse performance with different firmware.

Other Thoughts: It's a great unit if you like to customize it and don't have internet service over 40 Mbps (unless you overclock the CPU). It easily stream 40+ Mbps Blu-ray movies across my home network with hardly any CPU utilization... but downloading that much from the internet is different and really taxes the CPU.

1 out of 5 eggsEnd of Trust

Pros: Affordable

Cons: I have loved these routers for many years, for their sturdy, affordable, open-source reliability, and am saddened by what seems to be a trend. Three of the four WRT 54 Linksys routers i have bought since last summer have died.

They've worked too long for a return, although maybe there's a manufacturer's warranty.

I still use one of these for a primary router, and it's working, but I won't be gambling on them any longer.

Other Thoughts: I do wish there were an easier way to contact manufacturers via Newegg. Our business does a high volume of business here, but trying to contact someone at Newegg for support is always a frustration.

The RMA process (for items less than 30 days old) seems to work great though.

Pros: love these little guys, i chain them, put one in each are of home and one in basement for super mobile hotspot and LAN Calling on phone - netflix on TV dvds also

Cons: daisy chaining them is kind of a pain (there should be a factory setting - some thing like - is this to expand and existing network? - LINKSYS guy reading reviews, I come work for ya... lol)

5 out of 5 eggsOne of the Best Wireless Routers Ever

Pros: I have owned this model since 2005 (yes, the year it came out) and it is still providing wireless internet access in my home. I have two more that I use that aren't quite as old. I still recommend this wireless router to some of my older friends who just need reliable wireless access to email, facebook and so on. It is hands down one of the most stable wireless products I have ever used, I never have to reboot it or mess with it, it just works. Now if only they would come out with a wireless N or AC model using the same linux firmware (which is what I have used since the beginning, I tried tomato and one of other firmware that someone recommended to me, both were very good but since the original firmware had served me fine for five years I wanted to keep using it). I am going to keep my 2005 edition wrt54gl running until it dies, I have an airport extreme that utilizes wireless AC but I still connect to my good ol' wrt54gl.

Cons: Only cons are that it doesn't support higher data rates. If Linksys came out with a wireless AC version running the same/similar firmware, I'd be all over it.

Other Thoughts: After using the wrt54gl for 5 years at home I started recommending it to clients, this was back in 2009 when wireless G was the fastest wifi speeds available, wireless N was just coming on the scene. Before that I would try any product that might be on the tech store's shelves. I'd usually get a few calls a month about wifi being down, "reboot it" was the my answer and all would be well until the device would go down again. I can't think of a time a client with a wrt54gl called and reported their wifi being down, again,, one of the best wireless routers ever made!

3 out of 5 eggsTempermental Network

Pros: Cheap. Effective Range

Cons: Network is not always stables, especially across multiple computers

Other Thoughts: Overall, you get what you pay for. This Router worked find but never worked spectacularly. I later upgraded to a more expensive router and had a much better experience.
