4 out of 5 eggsSolid Router

Pros: This seems to be a no nonsense basic router. The app is a rather clever touch but I had some issues "bumping" to get the settings recorded to my wireless devices. The wireless signal is strong but no stronger (or weaker) than any of the other high-end routers I've reviewed. Though the signal is still solid throughout my entire home after being installed in my finished attic studio it will still not reach to the garage (I still have yet to find a router that will penetrate the garage firewall). I installed and tested the open source dd-wrt firmware and it was fully functional and very feature-rich and solid on this router. I found the simplicity of the stock firmware far more user-friendly but most people buying this router will want to carve their own path through the wilderness, so to speak. If you are looking for something to customize to your liking then using dd-wrt or one of the many other open source firmwares available is simple enough.

Cons: This thing is like a giant flat chunk of desk-space-waste. It can be wall mounted similar to a picture frame with screw slots built in to the bottom of the router. It also has the dreaded power plug brick. When I say brick I mean a GIGANTIC block that will take up possibly two extra plugs on an UPS and if not installed on the bottom slot then around three or four extra plugs on a surge protector strip. In the age of bump-phone-to-card-to-install-wireless-settings applications and open source firmware why have we not figured out how to make a normal power plug. Is this the cheapest option? Possibly. I will pay the extra $20 for a plug that doesn't look like it belongs in a DUPO blocks set.

Other Thoughts: I was invited to review this router and was notified at the time that it is basically out of date and being replaced with newer technology but I wouldn't hesitate to use this device. I will be reinstalling my other router that I have a love-hate relationship with (what can I say, I'm stubborn) but this router is going on my "backup" shelf in case I have any issues or a stray lightning bolt takes out my hardware.

4 out of 5 eggsAC router

Pros: I ordered the Linksys EA6500 and it arrived in just a few days. It’s a sleek design that looks great. The dual-band router arrives from the factory with easy-to-remember, preassigned network names for its 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks This router can be managed remotely from anywhere you have internet access. With two USB plugs one USB 3.0 and one USB 2.0. So you don't need a NAS with this router. 6 internal antennas, 4 Gigabit Ethernet ports It has all the features you need in a router. It has some apps that help with managing cloud based file set up and a few other tricks but I just needed a simple router for my house and this did the trick. The set up was straight forward and firmware upgrade was easy. It only took a few minutes.

Cons: It is a little pricey and you can get faster speeds for the same price. Storage speeds were a little slow. Network speeds were fast.

Other Thoughts: I would suggest this for anyone that needs a good router and doesn't know how to set one up. This router does it all and it does it well. It just works. Some of the added features were a little confusing but for what I needed it was simple.

1 out of 5 eggsMissing standard features

Pros: supports USB 3.0 devices

Cons: Can't set the date and time. My date is wrong by about 3-1/2 years. Can't easily assign my own sub-net.

Other Thoughts: I wouldn't recommend this product to others or buy another Linksys router.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Stephen,

Thank you for the taking the time in reviewing this product. This device is designed for home networking and doesn’t support sub-networking as what you have observed but rest assured your feedback will be shared to the Engineering team.

The router has a feature to automatically set the date and time once you have selected a time zone. If the time and date hasn’t changed, reboot the router and check again the time settings. Make sure also that the firmware is up to date.

If the result is the same, email us at LinksysCares@linksys.com and indicate your full name, phone number, location, and the link to this post.

Sincerely,

Linksys Support

1 out of 5 eggsTerrible range

Pros: None so far...

Cons: The range is terrible. The wifi goes in and out constantly. I have tried several channels (1,3,6 and 11). The firmware is up to date. I have no idea what to do next. I have tried everything. Going to try to get a refund..

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Bryan,

We appreciate you sharing with us your feedback for the Linksys EA6500, though, we're sorry to hear about the inconvenience you have experienced with the unit. Where is the router placed? With the WiFi going in and out constantly, it is possible that there is another connection interfering your wireless network. We suggest that you place the router on a higher location, and have the Channel Width to 20 MHz only and leave the Channel at 6. Once the changes are made, kindly observe the connection and let us know should you need further assistance.

Feel free to send us the details along with your contact information at LinksysCares@linksys.com. Looking forward to hear from you.

2 out of 5 eggsCheap

Pros: When it was new it had a good strong signal once properly set up.

Cons: After about 6 months router starts losing it's signal strength in the 2.4 and 5 bands.

Other Thoughts: THe last three Linksys routers I have owned have done the same thing with varying timeframes (e3000 v1, E3200 v1, EA4200, and now EA6500 v2). Linksys is trying to pump these routers out as cheaply as they can while over taxing the internal hardware to product a strong signal when you first get them. Problem is this wears out the internal components and signal strength drops and in many cases will completely cut out. Flashing the router with DD-WRT may help. I will be trying this next because I have a hard time tossing a router as expensive as this. Maybe that will help to a limited extent.

I personally will not be buying any more Linksys products. I can get better build quality and longevity from cheapy netgear routers.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Daniel,

Thank you for bringing this to our attention and we apologize for the experience you've had. We understand how tough it was for you and we're hoping you'd still let us help you with your device. Here are the possible solutions that you may do:

• Make sure that you have a stable connection to your modem.
• Position the router away from windows, thick walls, and move it to the floor where you're most likely to use Wi-Fi.
• Adjust the router’s wireless channel to avoid possible interference in your network. Use the Wi-Fi analyzer app. It helps you to find a less crowded channel for your wireless router.
• Update or re-flash the firmware.

If the connection will not improve, you can send us an email at LinksysCares@linksys.com with your contact details, location, and the link to this review so that we can assist you further.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: I've had this router (v2) for about a year. It has some nice easy features that I love, like parental controls for device access and times blocking. No connection issues here. I also like the Gig LAN feature, which makes for transferring large files throughout the home network quick.

Cons: However; I do have to agree that the 5G bands usable area is too tight. So that cost this review 1 egg.

Other Thoughts: I have bought many things from Newegg, but this router, I did not.

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: It worked well for a short period of time.

Cons: Lots of connectivity issues after a distance of 10ft with one wall. I have since related it with a Netgear X6. Do not buy the EA6500

Manufacturer Response:

Hi,

Your time for reviewing this router is appreciated. We're sad to hear about your feedback but we're hoping you'd give us a chance to look into the situation.

May we know the firmware version of the router? Is this challenge affecting both wired and wireless connections? If it is only through wireless, some interferences might've been causing it. Try to change the wireless channel and observe if there'll be improvements.

We'd be happy to receive an update from you via email at LinksysCares@linksys.com and in the message, include also your full name, phone number, location, and the link to this post.

Sincerely,

Linksys Support

1 out of 5 eggsMy how the mighty have fallen...

Pros: Average to above-average 2.4 Ghz signal strength.

Cons: -DHCP is rocky. Sometimes assigns conflicting addresses!
-5Ghz band has tiny usable range.
-Unstable with IPv6 enabled.
-"Media Prioritization", their version of QoS, doesn't work at all
-Runs hot

Most importantly: Wireless network uptime is incredibly intermittent and unreliable. I constantly have to reboot the router if there is more than one computer connected to it.

Manufacturer Response:
